The Typhoon Display is flown by 29 (Reserve) Squadron from RAF Coningsby. It showcases the incredible performance of the aircraft and also demonstrates the dedication, professionalism and excellence of the RAF personnel who fly, maintain and support Typhoon operations in the UK and across the world.
Flt Lt Jonathan Dowen, known as ‘Jonny’ was born in Sutton Coldfield but initially grew up in Javea, Spain before moving back to the UK aged nine. He spent his Secondary School years attending Colyton Grammar School, Devon, where he completed his GCSE’s and A-level’s. From the age of 13 Jonny was an active member of the local Air Training Corps squadron. Intent on pursuing his aspiration of becoming a pilot, Jonny applied to the Royal Air Force and was awarded a Sixth Form Scholarship, before subsequently joining the RAF in 2005, aged nineteen. After graduating from his Initial Officer Training (IOT) based at RAF Cranwell he was then posted to RAF Wyton where he flew the Tutor aircraft as part of his Elementary Flying Training (EFT). Jonny was then streamed onto both the Tucano and Hawk aircraft, graduating from Advanced Fast Jet Training (AFJT) in the summer of 2009, before being posted to RAF Coningsby, where he spent 4 months learning to fly the Typhoon aircraft on the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU), 29(R)Sqn.
Upon completion of the OCU he joined XI(F)Sqn where he began his first operational tour with a frontline Sqn. During this period Jonny took part in multiple overseas deployments and exercises to India, Oman, United Arab Emirates, USA and the South Atlantic. On completion of his tour he was subsequently posted back to 29(R)Sqn as a Qualified Pilot Instructor (QPI) in early 2013. His primary role as a QPI is ensuring that new student’s are adequately trained and suitably qualified to serve on the frontline on completion of their training on the OCU. This involves instructing students on the basics of aircraft manoeuvring through to air to air and air to surface weapons employment, both day and night. His duties at Coningsby also include contributing to RAF Coningsby’s primary task of defending the United Kingdoms Airspace, known as Quick Reaction Alert (QRA).

US MARINE CORPS F-35B
The arrival of the USMC F-35B will be of most interest to both the public and British delegations at RIAT 2016 as both the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy will be receiving the 'B' model.
The first units to receive their F-35Bs will be the RAF's No. 617 Squadron and the Fleet Air Arm's 809 NAS, intended to replace the Tornado GR4 and the Harrier GR9 (which was retired in 2010).
The F-35B is the short take off/vertical landing (STOVL) variant and will be operated from the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers, as well as having the ability to operate from austere airbases.
The aircraft's STOVL capability is provided by a Rolls-Royce system that swivels thrust 90 degrees, supported by new fan technology. Air-to-air refuelling is achieved through the probe and drogue method, compatible with the RAF's Voyager tanker fleet.
The aircraft displaying at RIAT 2016 are a mixed team, coming either from VMFAT 501, MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, or VMX1, Edwards Air Force Base, California.
US AIR FORCE F-35A
The F-35 family will be making its debut at RIAT 2016 and will include the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) 'A' model, destined for the United States Air Force (USAF). The aircraft will come from the 56thFighter Wing, based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.
The F-35A is the smallest and lightest variant of the aircraft and is the only one to be equipped with an internal 25mm cannon. It is designed to operate from conventional air force bases, unlike its B and C model counterparts which are carrier-borne variants.

Each pupil designed a token to promote friendship after a discussion on what 'friendship' could mean.
Another scene from the short display of Northern Lights which surprised me on the early morn of January 28, seen across the Takhini River Valley, above the electric lights of Takhini Hot Springs, north of Whitehorse, Yukon. In recent years the science of predicting Auroral displays, based on careful observation of solar activity, has become remarkably precise, but, gratifyingly, we do occasionally get a brief unpredicted flareup.
The sun is so inert, relatively speaking, this year, that displays are weak, infrequent and have retreated somewhat further north than usual, so, for a fanatical devotee like yours truly, even mild displays are precious. Praktica VLC3 camera, 29mm Pentacon lens, 25 seconds on Fuji Natura 1600 film.
Why are skeletons wearing a pair of shorts so popular in many shop window displays? This is a question that has puzzled many shoppers and fashion experts alike. Some possible explanations are:
- Skeletons are trying to show off their bones and attract other skeletons.
- Shorts are cheaper than other clothes and skeletons are on a tight budget.
- Shorts are easier to put on and take off than pants or skirts, which is convenient for skeletons who often fall apart.
- Shorts are more comfortable than other clothes and skeletons have sensitive skin.
- Shorts are more fashionable than other clothes and skeletons have a keen sense of style.
But shorts are not the only skeleton fashion trend. Skeletons also like to wear hats, scarves, sunglasses, and even jewelry. They like to accessorize and express their personality. Some skeletons prefer a casual look, while others go for a more elegant or edgy style. Skeletons have a lot of fun with fashion and don't care what others think. They are confident and proud of their appearance. Next time you see a skeleton in shorts, or any other outfit, don't be afraid to say hello and compliment their outfit. They might just give you a smile and a wink.

This Walmart didn't finish their display setup. The boxes should be pulled out similar to the ones in the bottom right corner but further out. They are being used instead like drawers.
