Here it is the dead of winter - and there has been a bear mauling in our state. With temperatures running 30 to 57 F. degrees below zero - you would think that the darned bears would be curled up tight, and sound asleep - but that's not true. Yesterday three skiers in Haines Alaska got a little too close to a bear den - waking the sleeping bruin - and she flew out of her den all fangs and claws. One of the skiers was badly injured and medevacked to the hospital in Juneau. So the moral of the story has to be . . . "let sleeping bears lie", and always carry your bear spray - even in the dead of winter.

(The den you see in this photo is quite large, and located on our property.) I'm not poking my hand in there.

One little member of this dog team was letting out some pitiful howls, and wanted nothing more than to crawl right back into his dog box and go home. But he had 300 grueling and very cold miles to run, before he would be able to curl up on his little straw mattress and return home.

With temperatures dipping down to 57 F. degrees below zero (with wind chill) in our state today - I am dreaming of spring, and warm-sunny days. The tiny town of Tok happens to be the place recording that bitterly cold temperature this morning, and is just a three-hour drive from our cabin. It makes the 25 F. degrees below zero recorded at our place this morning - feel downright balmy.

I had just a couple of minutes to capture the sunset behind my cabin last night. Since my cellphone was nearby - I grabbed it, and quickly got a few shots off, before it disappeared. Today I decided to see how it would look as a digital oil painting - and was delighted to see how it brought out the true colors.

Infrared image pf excellent, locally-grown, organically-grown vegetables for sale at the local farmers' market. IR color profile derived from 590 IR filter using color modifications in Photoshop and Camera Raw. I like the suggestion of translucence in the vegetables.

Slopping together more electrons and photons here and there in this goofy homage to Sarah Connor via Rudy Rucker. Hope you all have a great weekend!

A lot of tourist businesses in Alaska, are owned and operated by people that reside in the lower 48 states. In April and May, you can see the out-of-state owners hurrying over the roadways, as they rush to open their particular enterprises. Some are open a scant four months - others may stretch it to five. In this photo you see just such an operation.

Being a long time Alaskan - I prefer to support authentic Alaskan owned businesses.

Doc seemed to think that I needed to start off the day off with a hearty breakfast. I do think that he went just a little bit overboard.

And as you can see - I played with my food, and artsy-fartsy'd it.

Wishing all of the moms in Flickr Land, a very Happy Mother's Day.

It's too bad you can't smell the sweetness of the iris blooms!

"Timeless Valentine" . . .

As time goes by from year to year,

One thing is surely true, my dear;

Though decades come and decades go,

Just seeing you sets me aglow.

Time shifts my body; I start to sag,

When I pass a mirror, it can make me gag.

My joints all ache; I can hardly move;

Still a smile from you, and I’m in the groove.

Getting older can be a pain,

But with you along, I can’t complain.

Despite the things that we go through,

I know I’ll never stop loving you.

Your loving heart turns life to play,

As we laugh at time from day to day.

So I write this poem, and I’ll hang my sign,

Saying, "Always Be My Valentine."

(Poem by; Karl and Joanna Fuchs)
