I was very surprised to see a long line of blue cars behind the two engines at the front of the train.
It looks that they had to take a deviation from the standard route.

A commentary on Edinburgh Churches*** - Part 8
***Occasional deviation: please note: whilst being an Edinburgh church, it is NOT a part of the Church of Scotland.
All opinions and observations are my own.
The central design theme to this church is the chancel containing large hanging cross, pulpit, and altar.
There are no contemporary design features.
It has modern adjustable seating. Seat cushions with names embroidered are stacked throughout the nave. Location of Bibles and hymnals were not immediately obvious.
I will simply add that the exterior of this cathedral is simply one of the most impressive in all of Scotland.
***This is a Scottish Episcopal church. As it is not a part of the CoS, I have not included any further detail.

Kirkby in Ashfield, 24th April 1990.
20195 drags 56025 south, probably for Toton depot, seen on the 1972 British Rail deviation.
The deviation was built to end the traffic queues at a level crossing in the town. So many coal trains passed through on the Midland line back then, it caused buses and other traffic to be severely delayed.
The deviation was from just south of where Sutton Parkway station is today, to join the former Great Northern line near where Kirkby Summit signal box was.
At the southern end, close to where today's Kirkby Lane End junction is, a short link re-connected with the Midland down to Pinxton and the Erewash Valley.
No coal trains today, but the line is still used by the Robin Hood passenger services from Nottingham to Mansfield and Worksop, plus the occasional EMU drags to and from storage in Worksop yard.

Following the closure of the manual Kirby Summit signal box in November 1994, some rationalisation of the signals has taken place here since my previous visit.
Sutton Junction's down distant has moved up to replace Kirkby Summit's starter (or is it section) signal.
In the background, the up distant for Kirkby Summit has been removed.

Slight deviation from the current theme - Vicia will temporarily take a step back (back on next frame, promise!)

Merddin Emrys was the other double Fairlie in service yesterday, seen here on the second departure of day from Blaenau Ffestiniog. Location is the southern end of the reservoir at Tanygrisiau, on the deviation built in the 1970s as the original FR trackbed is now covered by said reservoir.
Slight deviation from my normal stuff, this one from a rainy afternoon at the Anglesey Taransport Museum back in March.

Having seen it on the GPS on my way back from the previous photo, I figured lunch could wait another hour...

A bit of a deviation from the norm and experimenting with colour variations again. I have a few different samples but this took my eye.

Kate Middleton had such a beautiful smile as she greeted the crowds in front of the Tall Ship she and her husband Prince William just got off in Victoria's Inner Harbour. It was surreal seeing them in person. She is a stunning beauty.

At the southern end of the Chichester Deviation route, an empty train heads south.
In 2010, BHP finished "Rapid Growth Project 5" which aimed at increasing tonnnage on its railway. One of the cornerstone features of the project was the Chichester Deviation route. Empty trains take the old main, while loaded trains take the new 27km route with easier grades. The passing siding at Shaw is still in place and is rarely used.
In 2002 the boat lift of Strépy-Thieu was completed, almost 20 years after its construction started. Together with a deviation in the Central Canal it replaces 4 historical boat lifts. The Central Canal connects the Meuse and Schelde rivers. Two rivers important for water transportation in Belgium. Until a boat lift in China ( 3 gorges dam lift) will be completed, the Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift is the largest boat lift of the World.
The caissons have useful dimensions of 112 m by 12 m and a water depth of between 3.35 and 4.15 m. Each caisson is supported by 112 suspension cables (for counterbalance) and 32 control cables (for lifting/lowering), each of 85 mm diameter. The mass of the counterbalance was calculated to keep the tension in each of the control cables below 100 kN at all times. The suspension cables pass over idler pulleys with a diameter of 4.8 m. Four electric motors power eight winches per caisson via speed-reduction gearboxes and the 73.15-metre lift is completed in seven minutes. The structure is massively reinforced to provide rigidity against torsional forces during operation and has a mass of approximately 200,000 tonnes. The vertically moving watertight gates are designed to withstand a 5 km/h impact from a 2000 tonne vessel.

This shot was actually taken in colour. I adjusted the contrast, added vignette and converted the photo into black and white. And the result is as such.
