HafenCity Hamburg

HafenCity is being developed from west to east and from north to south – 62 projects are completed in 2017 and another 70 are under construction or in the planning stage; deals through sale of land or exclusive options have been closed on around 1.65 million sqm GFA. In the meantime, HafenCity has established its popularity as a place to live and work. Nowadays more than 1,800 residential units are completed approx. 12,000 people work in HafenCity as a whole, employed by more than 730 companies

HafenCity is among the most outstanding urban development projects on the waterfront anywhere. Based on a sophisticated concept, it is expanding the area of Hamburg City by 40 percent. It also has spin-off effects for the existing city centre, the whole of the Hanseatic city state with its 1.8 million inhabitants and its surrounding metropolitan region with a population of some five million. Hamburg’s identity as a maritime port city will be underscored in the process and HafenCity itself serve as a blueprint for the development of the European city of the 21st century. It is already regarded as a model for major international urban development projects, although its development timescale continues through to 2025/30.

In 2009, Am Sandtorkai/Dalmannkai led the way as the first completed neighbourhood in HafenCity’s development. The beginning of 2017 saw the opening of Hamburg’s outstanding and internationally applauded new Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, which sits atop the historic Kaispeicher A warehouse building. The new Hamburg landmark accommodates two concert auditoria, a five-star hotel and around 45 apartments. Close by, completion of the second large neighbourhood, Am Sandtorpark/Grasbrook, popular with many young families, followed at the beginning of 2011. The first primary school with kindergarten opened here in 2009, followed in 2013 by the popular Grasbrook park – primary school children were also involved in its design. Meanwhile, on Strandkai to the south, the first buildings completed there in 2009, Unilever headquarters and the Marco Polo Tower, an ensemble of office building and residential multi-storey, won multiple awards. At the same time, the first open spaces directly adjoining the River Elbe were opened up.

I developed my second concept: The superhero has conquered Cereal Mountain with nothing but a spoon! What a feat! :)

In terms of composition and readability, I think I was successful. But I had very different plans for the coloring. I'm really, really held back by the fact that I have little experience with Photoshop and Illustrator. I had intended to digitally paint this piece to add shadows and depth, but I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the background, let alone use any brushes (yes, even after a couple tutorials and endless attempts). So I was limited to live painting. It took away a lot of the detail I had in my penned drawing, but the blocky coloring adds to the comic-like aesthetic of the final design.

Exhibited at CECAL - Loulé, Portugal 2016.

All of the pictures were photographed in a light box (box made of cardboard and tracing paper, illuminated by LEDS). Except the series "Trying to belong" (Bert and Ernie), which was photographed outdoors. The developing was fully processed in the darkroom of “Casa da Cultura de Loulé”, and was exposed the original prints in silver chloride paper. (the presented examples are its scans)

The dolls photographed are a selection of some children toys of the authors and her nephew, plus some decoration dolls from their houses.

The narratives presented in each series or individual photo, are illustrations of personal situations and opinions, or simply the result of a time playing with dolls.

Persistent Gender Inequality in Iraq Calls for Coordinated Efforts in Developing 2nd National Action Plan on Implementing Resolution 1325

Baghdad, Iraq, 3 October 2018 – Gender inequality continues to prevail in Iraq with worrisome signals that it is deepening, requiring intensified efforts and coordination in developing a new action plan on implementing UN Security Council resolution 1325, UN Representative to Iraq Ján Kubiš said today at the high-level consultation meeting on the development of the 2nd National Action Plan. Although he was encouraged to see progress in the protection pillar and dedicated efforts to strengthen the participation pillar in the National Action Plan, the legacy of the conflict with the terrorist Da’esh continues to hamper steps forward and there are other worrying signs of women being targeted.

Mr. Kubiš condemned the recent attacks against women, including the assassination of two women and the sudden death of two others in the past month, all of them active in political and social spheres. Other civil society activists including women are targeted by social media and political threat campaign, among others for their contacts with foreign embassies. This is unacceptable.

“Only once politically and socially active women are protected and safe, Iraq can claim to be making real progress towards women’s equality and empowerment,” he said.

The development of a new NAP with all the diversity and complexity of issues will require continuous coordination and collaboration across sectors, in particular involving civil society, and drawing from the lessons learned from the previous plan, the Special Representative said.

“By making your deliberations open to the society, by publicly broadcasting them you could mobilise even broader support for your objectives,” Mr. Kubiš said.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq noted with disappointment that political forces that negotiate the formation of the government do so, again without the participation of women. “We all need to ask: “when the political leaders intend to deliver on their pledges to empower women and advance their rights as a part of the democratic entitlement of all Iraqis thus strengthening equal representation and inclusiveness? The time is now. Otherwise, all the exclamations about commitment to equality of women and values of democracy continue to sound hollow.”

Mr. Kubiš outlined UN efforts in support of women empowerment, noting that UNAMI supports women parliamentarians in their quest to establish a cross-political women’s parliamentary caucus. UNAMI will continue to impress on Political Parties who are key to advancing the participation of women in all processes to include women in their leadership structures, urging men advocates to assume a more prominent role, and parliamentarians to consider gender responsive budget in the next budget law to enhance the implementation of the NAP. The UN will also continue to advocate for the establishment of a dedicated institution in the next government structure with budget and authority to coordinate the implementation of the NAP and national frameworks and policies on WPS.

The UN in Iraq will also mobilise support of the broader international community, including through the International Gender Group from among embassies here in Baghdad, Mr. Kubiš concluded.

A peaceful estates in Hong Kong built in 1958. The estates is not large and only have 600 rental flats for low-incoming family.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sai_Wan_Estate

It is amazing that nearly 50% of Hong Kong citizen were still living in public rental housing in 2006. That means 50% of family were still having low incoming, such as $15,800 a month for a family with 4 members.

They need to work 4 months to buy a square feet of the property with highest price in Hong Kong (the top floor in The Cullinan) and need to work 2,533 years to buy that flat (7,600 square foot) without calculating the interest of mortgage.

The price of that property = salary of all people living in Sai Wan Estate work for 57 months.

What a crazy !!!

Natural arch developed in chalk & impure chalk in the Cretaceous of Kansas, USA.

This western Kansas landscape consists of chalk badlands and chalk pillars and a natural arch. The rocks are chalks and impure chalks (e.g., argillaceous chalk and chalky shale) that range in color from whitish to light gray to yellowish. Chalk is a biogenic, calcitic, marine sedimentary rock composed of numerous coccolith microfossils (see: www.soes.soton.ac.uk/staff/tt/eh/pics/lith2.gif). Coccoliths are individual calcareous plates that covered a single-celled photosynthetic marine organism called a coccolithophorid (a.k.a. coccolithophore) (see: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/Emiliania_hux...). These beds were deposited in the ancient Western Interior Seaway, a section of ocean that existed during parts of the Mesozoic Era in what is now the American and Canadian Great Plains.

Rock arches are rare erosional features - those developed in chalk beds are even rarer. If a stream goes under an arch, it is known as a natural bridge. If no stream is present, the feature is a natural arch. Along lakeshores, they are called lake arches. Along oceanic coastlines, they are called sea arches. The highest concentration of natural arches on Earth is Arches National Park in eastern Utah.
