A cryptic sticker seen in San Francisco, California, stating 'Zimmerman Flew, Tyler Knew, Gloom 182". Clearly this is a takeoff on the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too". "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too", originally published as "Tip and Ty", was a very popular and influential campaign song of the Whig Party's colorful Log Cabin Campaign in the 1840 United States presidential election. Its lyrics sang the praises of Whig candidates William Henry Harrison (the "hero of Tippecanoe") and John Tyler, while denigrating incumbent Democrat Martin Van Buren.

I forget his name too, but he did a great job of reading the words of Steve Collis, who spoke at the March 3rd rally at Victory Square.

pentax takumar 55m F2 lens test on eos 550D. As you can see I had problems with the focus.

Its a great lens when you suss the focus!

There is no VR or IS so you need fastish shutter speeds to compensate.

My verdict

Build quality 10/10

You know these are very good quality as soon as you pick one up and fiddle around with it using the focus and aperture etc.

Made of metal and smooth as silk, ,make no mistake these lenses are CLASS!

Lens sharpness 8/10 I'm maybe denigrating it here but I did have trouble focussing the thing.

I have used taks and super taks before and I do like them

Practibility..7/10. You lose autofocus obviously and it is awkward trying to get the focus crack on.

You also need to buy an adapter. No problem at all if you dont mind it,

Value for money 10/10 these can be had dirt cheap secondhand on ebay.

I'd give 11 out of 10 if it were possible!

8 MAR 13

It is about that time for mayoral elections. I just read a post that said the new candidate has called our city a quagmire. Probably not the best way to start out....

Mayor Annise Parker was elected the cities first openly gay mayor. As many have said, and which I do believe, I think that is largely irrelevant, but what IS relevant is the job she has done over the past few years. I like the previous Mayor, Bill White because in the time of Katrina/Ike crisis, I swear, this man did not sleep for three months straight. He was out every single day trying to help citizens from near and far to recover and hold the city together on an emotional level when a lot of spirits were broken. He made it priority numero uno to get power back on which was a long never ending struggle and basically said to the workers who were rightly exhausted, that no one sleeps until the last lights are on. It was that drive that really showed his tenacity and drive to make sure that Houston was up and running. I think he laid the ground work for the Annise Parker to come and she has not only run with it, she has superseded expectations.

I literally feel as though she genuinely loves this city. Every week she holds press on PBS-local and answers the tough questions on televised city hall. She doesn't bullsh__ either. If you bring a real problem to her she makes real efforts to correct it rather then give some long winded answer to sooth the masses over until its 2 months later and nothing has been done. Because of her efforts and those of many others who aid her in her work, in this economic down turn, Houston is still churning out jobs, many of the run down parts of the city are being rebuilt, and there have been several concerted and some very successful attempts to bring new revenue, business, and entertainment to the city. Sorry to get maybe "so political here," but its nice for once to not feel like a politician is up on a pulpit making empty promises and that they love the people and the place they are representing.

Other news: bell peppers...why do you hate me. This is batch number 4 that has not sprouted..and these are an entirely new type of seeds from a new batch as I suspected the other ones may just be crappy seeds. I use a lot of bell peppers in my cooking, so I naturally thought, here is something I ought to grow, but its proving to be most difficult. I'll have to research for sure.

In the fundraising department, I have now tripled my original fundraising goal thanks to the now donations of family for AIDS walk 2013. Uh-mazing. I will be walking in honor of my cousin who died in the early 90's due to this terrible disease. During that time as the crisis was jumping off, not many churches would offer services and his home church was no different. These were deep rooted Southern Baptists, so I remember the family having to say he died of "cancer" on his obituary and his partner was listed as a friend. How many other people died this way. At least, he had the benefit of being surrounded by a family who did love him unconditionally, but so many were just abandoned and left to die in a hospital or worse. I don't tend to associate or put up with people who hide behind their hate or ignorance of anybody. No one should ever have to feel as though they are alone or abandoned in this world for being who they are. It is so much easier to live a life where love is at the helm of your ship then to seek to destroy, ignore, or denigrate people who could be the best things that ever happened in your life. When I got my DSLR, the first thing I did was name it after my cousin, in honor of his memory because he was an avid photographer who never missed the opportunity to shoot the family that loved him as he loved us. I will be proud to walk on Sunday in remembrance of his loving spirit and too shoot the event with the camera I have named in his honor.

I have a good friend who is a professional photographer. For him and his colleagues to describe something as a postcard shot is to denigrate it. But I'm still at the stage where to take a postcard quality picture is something I aspire to.

There seems to be some disagreement as to what makes a good bird photograph. I base this statement on e-mails from Lou Coetzer, the guy behind CNP Safaris out of South Africa. I have taken two successful safaris with this group, Etosha in Namibia and Chobe in Botswana. With Mr. Coetzer in mind, and he was not the leader in either of my safaris, I post this photograph. The Jacana is about to take flight, so this is not the denigrated bird "portrait," derided by advanced wildlife photographers. What the photo lacks, though, in my opinion, is universal appeal through capturing vulnerability in a hostile environment and sensitivity.

Read my blog entry on the Hong Kong protest at guywong.blogspot.com/2014/10/hong-kong-protest.html

The press has been extremely biased with its reporting, interviewing predominantly the protesters and their leaders, criticizing those who oppose the movement, and denigrating the Hong Kong government and police. Their articles concentrate on peaceful protesters yearning for democracy but fail to show the violent and disruptive side of the protest. Hong Kong is actually a very free city with all the characteristics of democracy.

The protest is not a spontaneous student movement but a well funded and well organized anti-government undertaking.

I have also included at the bottom of the blog entry how foreigners are involved in the planning and funding of the protest.

Together apostasy and blasphemy laws punish conversion from a particular faith and the proclamation of any beliefs perceived as denigrating those officially sanctioned.

Ramanunjan does not stop here; he brings in even oral ballads of South Indian folk into literature .

and cites the ballad as sung by 'tamburis' of Kannada. As per this Ravan called Ravula there, had .

no child. He along with his queen Mandodri went to forest and did intense tapasya. Lord Shiva .

appeared as jogi and gave him a mango to be eaten by his queen after certain rituals. .

Ravan, instead, ate the fruit himself and became pregnant. The poem detailing month-wise .

condition of pregnancy has also been cited. Eventually, Ravan, out of public shame, gives birth to .

Sita through nasal sneeze (Sita meaning sneeze in Kannada). Ravan, out of sheer disgust then .

leaves Sita in the fields of king Janak! .

.

Author even sorts out a tale from Santhal folklore and puts forth the greatest outrage to .

Hindu psyche before the students of literature that Ravan as well as Lakshman both seduced Sita. .

No one on Earth so far dared to question the character of Sita so brazenly as Ramanunjan has .

done, though, all through under the convenient cover of a folklore! How Ramayana called .

Ramkein in Thailand manipulates the episode also does not escape the vigil of our learned author. .

Here, he finds something to grossly denigrate Hanuman. According to this story: "Hanuman is .

quite a ladies' man, who does not at all mind looking into the bedrooms of Lanka and .

doesn't consider seeing another man's sleeping wife any thing immoral." .

.

While describing thoughts on translation, author, on page 158 questions the very existence of Ramayana in a unique way by mocking at the very root of Hindu faith. In his own words: ''A folk legend says that Hanuman wrote the original Ramayana on a mountain-lop, after the Great 1 War, and scattered the manuscript: it was many times larger than what we have now. Valmiki is said to have captured only a fragment of it. In the sense, no text original, yet no telling is a mere telling and the story has no closure, although it may be enclosed in a text. In India and in South-east Asia { no one ever reads the Ramayana or Mahabharat for the last time. The stories are there, ;!ways ready." Here even folklore has been made the basis of and penned to shatter the erstwhile impregnable belief. How mischievous, how cheap! .

On page 156 the author comes out stark naked with his own conclusion about the episode .

and the major characters exposing his mind-set and intention to the hilt. In his words: "Now is .

there a common core to the Ram stories, except the most skeletal set of relations like that of .

Ram, his brother, his wife and the antagonist Ravana who abducts her? Are the stories bound .

together only by certain family resemblances, as Wittgenstein might say? Or is it like Aristotle's .

This approach is total negation of the greatest episode and attack on an article of faith and .

a sort of blasphemy. These extracts have been cited here just as an example to give one an idea .

as to how and, probably, why, only negative, derogatory, humiliating and often outrageous pieces .

have been sorted out by Ramanunjan though the entire write-up highlights only negative and .

defamatory tellings, through and through1 which will not be difficult for one to grasp even on a .

casual reading. It is amazing that his 'genius' could find no positive material supporting or .

leviating Hindu psyche and tradition! Unless one is bent upon denigrating a particular thought, .

culture or belief, such a negative and perverse attitude is not expected by a 'litterateur', .

especially, in the background of ethos of Hindu culture. .

.

One is well aware, how small distortion about Shri Ram by Karunanidhi has brought furor in .

the whole of the country. One can well appreciate what potential, full throated abuse of all spiritual personalities like Shri Ram, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman, does have and what disaster it can bring to the GOP rise and send development to back burner! .

Our esteemed Constitution does not permit violation of any breach of 'freedom of religion' and certainly scandalizing one's belief is the breach of this fundamental right. Indian Penal Code has specific provisions against this violation. Many petitions have been filed under these provisions, and will be filed, if a breach is not remedied. .

We call upon all the nationalists, democratic and progressive minds of the country to stand against this kind of Distortion at the behest of UPA Government. We also appeal to the student community to rally behind ABVP to isolate and expose this Congress-communists unholy alliance and save Indian culture and heritage. .

In this city and for about 100 years the grid-plan served its citizens on foot well. Now with about 80% of all trips made by car, truck or bus, the plan has been denigrated. At this cross intersection of two streets, none is two-way and in one traffic cannot continue through even though the road is available. When driving, people have to learn and relearn that the grid has stopped being one, even though the map shows it unaltered: denigrated, confusing and frustrating and, at times, risky. For those on foot and bike, all remains the same apart from the increased risk of navigating crash-prone intersections and non-segregated paths.

Archetype of the "dark" inner feminine, Lilith, for ages cast aside and denigrated by patriarchal religion as a demoness, had been rehabilitated centuries ago in Islamic Sufi guise. She is known to Muslims as Layla — of Layla and Majnun fame.

Both names come from the same ancient Semitic root meaning 'night'. Lilith, a survival from prehistoric Middle Eastern goddess religion was demonized and became only a memory under patriarchal religion. Her reputation has taken on the meaning of the "dark side" of the Feminine.

2016-MAY-08; Mark Bauer had an op-ed article published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

GOP leaders came up with a great solution for climate change.

* Right-wing arguments against global warming keep changing.

* George H.W. Bush used cap and trade to solve air pollution problems.

* Waiting for global warming crisis will mean a more expensive fix.

Before Facebook, I thought everyone believed in science. I saw this as a meme on the internet, and it hit home with me..

Over the past 20 years, we?ve seen this transition play out in the conservative narrative on global warming..

Since the 1990s, when global warming was first recognized as a threat, my right-wing friends have used these arguments in sequential order:.

* Global warming isn?t real; it?s a conspiracy by scientists..

The hidden agenda of these scientists was apparently to ruin the American economy..

Right-wingers never could explain why these scientists wanted to ruin our nation and who was funding them, but they never backed off the claim that scientists were not being honest with their data..

* Global warming isn?t real; scientists are wrong..

Their basis was something even I remember: Back in the 1970s, there was vocal minority of scientists who believed in a greenhouse cooling effect..

It actually was easier to explain: Pollution was creating particulates in the atmosphere that would block the sunlight, thus reducing the sun?s heat..

It culminated in a 1974 Time magazine cover asking when the new Ice Age would occur..

Even then, the majority of scientists believed in a warming trend, but their data weren?t as exciting. The warming trend eventually was proved in the 1980s..

* Global warming is real, but it?s not man-made..

My conservative friends send me charts showing how Earth has cooled and heated over the eons..

Although climate scientists concede that Earth?s temperature has changed over time, the current acceleration in warming is easily traced to human activity since the Industrial Revolution..

* Global warming is real, humans are part of the problem, but there?s nothing that can be done about it..

Al Gore can save his breath. They agree with him that global warming is real, but the fix is too economically devastating..

Here?s the real frustration: There is a fix to global warming, and Republicans are the ones who came up with it..

It is a fix that has been proven to work, a fix that includes the free market with gentle economic incentives. It?s called cap and trade. We know it works because Republicans used it to fix a similar problem that is no longer in the headlines..

Remember acid rain? It was noticed back in the 1800s that marble statues and steel structures were deteriorating rapidly due to rain that was more acidic than normal. The first federal action to investigate this issue was in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. The final solution was signed by George H.W. Bush in 1989 with a series of amendments to the Clean Air Act..

Title IV established the cap and trade system designed to control emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides..

In fewer than eight years, the total SO2 emissions reached the goal ahead of the 2010 targets..

Industry was able to do it economically, on their own terms without draconian federal regulations..

The way it worked was that those companies that invested in pollution-reduction equipment sold their excess pollution credits to those companies that would rather pay to maintain their current emissions..

Over time, the cap was reduced until the overall pollution reductions were met. The private sector was allowed to get there in their own way. Cap and trade provides the private sector with the flexibility to reduce emissions while stimulating technological innovation and economic growth. Unfortunately, conservatives have demonized cap and trade (they like to denigrate it by calling it cap and tax)..

But cap and trade is a solution, and Republicans ought to embrace it because it is their idea..

The alternative is to wait for global warming to reach a crisis level, requiring a more expensive fix that can?t be implemented without government intervention. Let?s save our planet now, using our innovative private sector, before we lose the opportunity..

I developed my taste for Sapporo Reserve in college. The local bodega sold this in 22 ounce (650 ml) shiny cans, which proved to be exactly the right amount to drink the beer while it was still tasty and cold. 12 ounces is too little, and those monstrous 40 ounce bottles are decidedly too large. So volume ended up being a critical factor, but I grew to like the taste.

Thus when we visited the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, it seemed obvious that we should visit the source of all that lovely Sapporo. The brewery has long since outgrown its original factory for industrial-sized digs, but they thoughtfully converted it into a combined museum and beergarten where one can sample their libations. At the end of a long and tiring day, that sounded just about right. (And the museum, beginning with a twisting ramp around a massive copper kettle, was actually one of the more informative museum's of its size I've visited.

Anent the beverages: as is usually the case, the Sapporo in Japan is not the same as the Sapporo in America, the latter of which is brewed in American for Americans. So I can say without reservation that the Sapporo Black of Japan is a truly delicious beer, without affecting any denigration of the lighter American version.

Funny note: the neighbourhood in Tokyo where we stayed was named Ebisu, after one of the earliest brands produced by Sapporo, Yebisu (the "y" is silent). I thought this was a coincidence; it is not. It is a neighbourhood named after beer. Superb.

Finally, lest you miss them, Brer Aaron and Pa Sunshine are striding along in tandem in the lower right.

Im thinking we should all just agree to be photographed.

I guess I would think that.

But what is the alternative?

We all refuse to be photographed?

We all make it a prior permission only thing?

If anyone ever wants to photograph me I just smile and agree or if I see someone photographing, I just try and get on normally as I would without their presence.

I try not to even ask what they are doing it for or why they want that picture.

Just let them get on with it.

I try to be as I hope to find people myself: open and unafraid.

Any other action really comes from learned and becoming prevalent behavior that associates photography with abuse.

It really isn't.

It's just a fantastic phenomena. An incredible medium that allows you to see frozen moments of the past.

How incredible to be part of an instant history. Part of an artistic rendering of memory and experience.

How sad to have lived in a time before photography.

Photography helps shape our collective experience and our collective memory it is integral to modern thinking.

Both in the big picture..... nationally and internationally....... but also just personally at home with our loved ones.

Don't let yourself become tainted by ideas that try and denigrate this amazing medium.

Don't allow yourself to be persuaded that photography is somehow abusive...... that making a photograph of somebody or something without a prior written legal waiver or model release is inherently abuse.

It just isn't.

Ramanunjan does not stop here; he brings in even oral ballads of South Indian folk into literature .

and cites the ballad as sung by 'tamburis' of Kannada. As per this Ravan called Ravula there, had .

no child. He along with his queen Mandodri went to forest and did int~se tapasya. L~rd_Shiva .

appeared as jogi and gave him a mango to be eaten by his queen after certain ntuals. .

Ravan instead ate the fruit himself and became pregnant. The poem detailing month-wise .

conditi~n of prednancy has also been cited. Eventually, Ravan, out of public shame, gi~es birth to .

Sita through nasal sneeze (Sita meaning sneeze in Kannada). Ravan, out of sheer d1sgust then .

leaves Sita in the fields of king Janak!

While describing thoughts on translation, author, on page 158 questions the very existence .

of Ramayana in a unique way by mocking at the very root of Hindu faith. In his own words: \\A .

folk legend says that Hanuman wrote the original Ramayana on a mountain-lop, after the Great .

War, and scattered the manuscript : it was many times larger than what we have now. Valmiki is .

said to have captured only a fragment of it. In the sense, no text original, yet no telling is a mere .

telling and the story has no closure, although it may be enclosed in a text. In India and in South-.

east Asia, no one ever reads the Ramayana or Mahabharat for the last time. The stories are there, .

always ready." Here even folklore has been made the basis of and penned to shatter the erstwhile .

impregnable belief. How mischievous, how cheap! .

On page 156 the author comes out stark naked with his own conclusion about the episode and the major characters exposing his mind-set and intention to the hilt. In his words: "Now is there a common core to the Ram stories, except the most skeletal set of relations like that of Ram, his brother, his wife and the antagonist Ravana who abducts her? Are the stories bound together only by certain family resemblances, as Wittgenstein might say? Or is it like Aristotle's jack-knife? \Nhen the philosopher asked an old carpenter how long he had his knife, the latter said, 'Oh! I have had it for thirty years. I have changed the blade a few times and the handle a few times, but it is the same knife.' Some shadow of a relational structure claims the name of Ramayana for all these things, but on a closure look one is not all that like another. Like a collection of people with the same proper name, they make a class in name alone." .

This approach is total negation of the greatest episode and attack on an article of faith and a sort of blasphemy. These extracts have been cited here just as an example to give one an idea as to how and, probably, why, only negative, derogatory, humiliating and often outrageous pieces have been sort?d out by Ramanunjan though the entire write-up highlights only negative and defamatory tellings, through and through, which will not be difficult for one to grasp even on a casual reading. It is amazing that his 'genius' could find no positive material supporting or alleviating Hindu psyche and tradition! Unless one is bent upon denigrating a particular thought, culture or belief, such a negative and perverse attitude is not expected by a 'litterateur', especially, in the·background of ethos of Hindu culture. .

And just 2 blocks further south on Palafox, an historical marker noting the lunch counter sit-ins (often at Woolworth’s stores) of the 60’s that were part of the process of integrating retail stores.

I was generally quite pleased to see such documentation of historic periods, but on the marker is a comment that surprises me. Though the marker was dedicated in 2014 and sponsored in part by the NAACP, it seems to denigrate the importance of the sit-ins by blaming the demise of downtown stores on blacks: “Downtown stores lost 80% of their business because of the boycott….”

STREET ART: 'YARN BOMB' on CLEMENT STREET! YARN BOMBINGS or KNIT-TAGS are appearing around the world.

(ADDA took photos of some in PARIS that were absolutly the bomb...knit-bomb at that!)

This has taken the STREET ART world by storm. It is something traditional and homey and placing it in an environment-graffiti art which is so male-dominated", says KNIT BOMB ARTIST MAGDA SAYEG aka POLYCORN. She has KNIT BOMBED a Stop sign, a rainbow cover on a Mexico City bus, and even a powder pink coat for a single stone on the WALL OF CHINA.

"It takes a private activity, part of the public domain." "With YARN BOMBING you can't deny that this kind of functional art and craft which is historically been thought of as a 'womans work' has had its worth denigrated and minimized as such. "

With YARN BOMBING it takes this 'homey' craft into an edgy art form.

India 2014: Rise Up Against Corrupt Communal Corporate Game·plan! .

Wlth the 2014 Lok Sabha at the doorstep, the carefully orchestrated campaign for past few years to projectNarendra Modi as the next Prime Minister of the country has crossed all limits. PR managers and mediablrtzkrieg are trying to paint Modi, who presided over a horrific communal genocide in 2002, as the messiahof 'good governance' and '.

economic growth,' now far removed from any communal politics. W e are being told: Forget 2002,Forget the rapes, murders and fake encounters. Forget the state machinery's role in 2002, and Parade Modi model of 'growth','development' and 'good governance.' .

~;i:..

But Modi himsetf has brazenly affirmed time and again that contempt, hatred, and violence towards the minorities and.

denigration ofthe oppressed sections is embedded in his imagery, his metaphors, and his politics. His own speeches make .

l .

it very clear that Modi's communal plank isn'.

t a thing of the past-it's very much his recipe for power in the presentand nearfuture. We have already seen him refer to the victims of the Gujarat genocide as .

'puppies crushed under a car,' and his jeeringreference to the 'burqa' .

of secularism (rather than the word 'purdah' which is used by Hindus and Muslims alike)~.

Here is a sample of the calculated communal colour of Modi's RECENT speeches:.

animals are getting slaugl1tered... Export cotton and pay tax. export mutton and get subsidy" Thls is directly in line with theSangh's communal propaganda against 'cow slaughter,' demonising the minority communities by associating them with'slaughtering cows and other animals.' Farmers' .

groups demand subsidies for their products virthout pitting this against subsidiesfor meat producers, but Modi gives farmers' demands a communal twist..

At Agra in November 2013, he accused the UPA Government of "neglecting and doing injustice to 75 percent of the people and.

playing games for 25 percent of the people." .

And his latest call at an Assam rally (22 Feb) of accommodating Hindu migrants from Bangladesh in India while cftstinguishing.

those who are brought for 'vote bank'! .

The Modi Government has refused to abide by the Gujarat High Court verdict of February 2013 to implement minority.

scholarships in Gujarat. In its affidavit, the Gujarat Government has attacked the Sachar Committee, saying "The Sachar Committee.

I is neither constitutional nor statutory....The Committee's target was to help the Muslims only.".

.

t The style of Modi's campaign for the 'Statue of Unity ' (t he statue of Sardar Patel) is another example of his fascist political.

tl imagination. He asked people to join the campaign for 'one resolution, one goal, one direction, one voice and one determination'..

til In deed for Modi, it is not uunity tn diversity· but "unity in uniformity"! Modi made it very clear what this 'oneness' was all about:.

India has bee!'l a witness to such disciplined joint participation on religious occasions and joint cefebrations of an entire.

The Fundacion Portobelo and the Grupo Realce Historico announce that on Saturday, April 27 they will hold the 11th PORTOBELO CONGOS AND DIABLOS FESTIVAL. This is the main event for Panamanian Afro-colonial culture. Without a doubt it’s a major cultural and tourist attraction for locals and foreigners, who fill the streets of the historic town to enjoy the autochthonous manifestations of this area of the province of Colon.

This important folkloric meeting has been confirmed the support of of the Tourism Authority of Panama and the National Institute of Culture, institutions that are once again joining this cultural effort. The festival arose from the concern of local residents to maintain their traditions, and brings indisputable cultural, economic, tourism and image gains for the community of Portobelo, Colon province and the country in general.

This 11th festival is celebrated within the framework of the recent recognition of the Congo culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The distinction is not only a matter of national pride: it gives a definitive accolade to a culture previously denigrated and marginalized. Thanks to the persistence of its cultists of all the peoples of the coasts of Colon and beyond, it has remained alive and powerful.

The style of Modi's campaign for the 'Statue of Unity' (the statue of Sardar Patel) is another exampJe of his fascist political .

Clearly, BJP's model of imagining India is based on an ideology w hich is against our secular democratic constitution and divisive. Modt himself has claimed that he is a 'Hindu-Nationalist' What about the rights of the minorities if the country is constituted on the 1dea of 'Hmdu nationalism?' Can the struggle of the dallts and women against the history of oppression legitimised m practice and scriptures of 'sanatana dharma', be a part of this nationhood? One example of the perverted vision of "Hindu Nationalism" is Modi's own statement about the Dalits who are forced to perform manual scavenging, contained in pages 48-49 of Karmayog, a collection of Narendra Modi's speeches to lAS officials at vanous points, published by the Gujarat govt in 2007· "I do not believe that they have been doing this JOb just to sustain their livelihood. Had this been so. they would not have continued with this type ofJOb generation after genera/Jon . At some point of time, somebody must have got the enlightenment that it is their (Va/mikis') duty to work for the happiness of the entire society and the Gods; that they have to do this job bestowed upon them by Gods; and that this job ofcleaning up should continue as an internal spiritualactivity for centuries. Th1s should have continued generat1on after generat1on. It IS 1mposs1ble to believe that thelf ancestors did not have the choice of adoptmg any other work or busmess." (http 1/blogsJimesofindia.mdiatimes com/true-lies/entry/modi-s-splritual-potion-to-woo-karmayogis) After the embarrassing exposure, Modi withdrew all the copies of the book, but he did not change his ideas. In 2009, addressmg 9,000-odd safa1 karmachans. (sanitation workers) he likened the safai karmachans' job of cleaning up others d1rt' to that of a temple priest. He told them, "A priest cleans a temple every day before prayers, you also clean the city like a temple. You and the temple priest work alike"! 11 And in 2013 Gujarat budget, allocated a sum of Rs 22.5 lakhs for giving trainmg in Karmkand (rituals} to Safa1 Kamdars 1 .

This is the RSS model of "samajik samrasta" and clear an attempt to reverse the pioneering role of Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Am bedkar against untouchability and the formulation ofIndian constitution. If anything has to be termed anti-nattonal, then that is nothing but BJP's. perverted notion of nationalism and reversal of struggle against casteism, communalism and gender-violence .

Modi's contempt for the facts of history -no doubt a result of his saffronised education in the Sangh -has been amply demonstrated many times, wtfh h1m even gettmg Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's name wrong and confusing freedom fighter Shyamaji Krishna Varma w11h Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookherjee. .

This scene is as much about the lichen as it is the singing Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus). The finely-branched, long and dangly lichen partially covering the bird is common witch's hair (Alectoria sarmentosa). The ruffly stuff accompanying the witch's hair on the western redcedar (Thuja plicata) branches, and actually acting as a support for the lightweight bird, is waxpaper lichen (Parmelia sulcata). The combination of tree limbs, lichen and bird makes for a beautiful scene that offers a broader description of life in the coastal forests of BC than a basic shot of an avian with much of the surroundings lost due to a narrow depth-of-field.

Indeed, the latter is more an illustration than a work of fine art. Illustrations have their uses, can be quite beautiful and are very important (such as in field guides). I am an illustrator myself and do not mean to denigrate the field. A wildlife scene with other elements outside the bird and the twig it has perched on approaches my idea of what fine art is all about: Dealing with an often challenging array of compositional elements and trying to find an arrangement that works within one's own artistic sensibilities.

This Swainson's Thrush does not exist in isolation. Rather the bird's existence is supported by the presence of a complex and interesting environment that includes lichen, herbaceous plants, shrubs, trees, insects and other animals. Without these things, the thrush would likely not be. And, to me, some of the most interesting wildlife shots include details about the environment in which the animal lives. It can be good to pull back on the zoom ring (if you are not using a prime) and capture more than just the object that is the most interesting at a given moment.

A pomegranate is a seedy apple, literally speaking. I said literally. Not trying to denigrate the pomegranate, an upright member of the fruit family, named from Latin pomum (apple) + granum (seed).

The pomegranate is a hard-working fruit. It has given us much. We got the word grenade from French grenade, which got it from Spanish granada. In both languages the words mean both a pomegranate and a grenade. The deep-red gem garnet is also named after the pomegranate.

That’s a behind-the-scenes peek of what I have gathered from our word gardens lately. So this week’s menu is all fruit. We’re doing our part to keep your vocabulary fit and perky.

Now it’s time for a question.

An apple knocker knocks them down, but how does a playwright get his fruit?

He shakes pear.

Today's word is apple knocker.

"Either the ABC’s recent article ‘Adult industry lobby group Eros Association, Australian Sex Party want tobacco sales restricted to adults only premises’ is a simple reflection of the reduced resources amid government funding reductions to the broadcaster, or – as I myself am inclined to believe – it is an indication that smoking is merely a topic to which people defer when there is a distinct drought of other lifestyle choices to discuss.

Certainly, I think it is a rather difficult task to offer any reasonable defence of smoking: it is an expensive habit, it yellows the teeth and paints one’s lungs with tar. Yet it is a habit I indulge in regardless, and the notion of indulgence often seems to be one that is thoroughly alien to those who don’t smoke. Of course, it only seems to be alien, but in actuality it is an exceptionally familiar notion. The difference between one indulgence, such as smoking, and another – such as Australia’s rather unhealthy relationship with the fruit of the vine – is that smoking has a certain dark drama associated with it: lung cancer, the slow process of wasting away and an ignoble death (can there indeed ever be a dignified death?). Such is this habit’s disrepute that smoking has become a popular connexion by which one can foist endless criticism on another: ‘Why do you keep smoking? It’s such a disgusting habit. My own father died of lung cancer.’ It is as if smoking somehow compromises an individual’s moral or intellectual capacity and reduces them to the status of an servant indentured to a decidedly evil multinational tobacco corporation that is clearly in collusion with the Illuminati and the Freemasons.

While I shan’t make a defence of smoking itself, I shall instead defend myself as a smoker and others: individuals smoke for a multitude of reasons, spanning from stress relief to (apparently) a sexual fetish. Yet to encourage others to change their behaviour through means of intimidation, denigration and incessant nagging is quite possibly the worst approach to a problem since the disciples James and John enquired Jesus as to whether they should call down fire from heaven to destroy an unwelcoming Samaritan village. Dare I say many smokers have contemplated quitting and will likely embark on at it some stage of their lives, but the process is slow and the priority ladder for many will require quitting smoking to be placed quite low on the rungs. A smoker – in addition to the many other stressors they are likely to experience in day-to-day life – need not be subject to an endless barrage of criticism for one particular respite from stress, and God forbid that we should be sufficiently gracious and empathetic such that we make lives of others slightly less difficult. It is of course, quite pertinent, to make the point that smokers mostly compromise the most disadvantaged strata of society: the poor, the disabled, the homeless, and the LGBT community all have rates of smoking much higher than the general community. It is perhaps then not the most apt approach to use tactics of shame and fear to instil change in smokers from these communities who have most likely experienced much shame and fear throughout their lives for various other reasons."

Mural by Teresa Altamirano (2018). The Sugar Hill neighborhood was one of the few places in Tucson where a black professional could buy a home between WWII and the passage of civil-rights legislation in the '60s. Eventually, the area was absorbed by other neighborhoods. A movement has begun to restore the name. However, there is a debate whether the name honors the area or denigrates it.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

-Martin Niemöller 1892 - 1984

The above poem was written by a German theologian sometime in the 40's as a response to facism and the rise of Nazi Germany.

Lest we think it can't happen in the USA (and spread elsewhere), we only have to look at the rhetoric of Donald Trump's campaign rallies throughout the USA, right up to his election. This was a campaign based on fear, racism, the rise of xenophobia, the denigration of women, the mocking of handicapped persons, the buildup of military police and militia groups, isolationist protectionist policies, the dismantling of NAFTA and NATO, and now - with a stacked Senate, the whitling away of civil liberties, threat to public-sector unions, women's reproductive rights and contraception, health care, and so forth.

Will Trump rise to the occasion as POTUS? We shall see.

Or, as Thomas Friedman writes in The New York Times Opinion Section:

" He has to become a healer instead of a divider; a compulsive truth-teller rather than a compulsive liar; someone ready to study problems and make decisions based on evidence, not someone who just shoots from the hip; someone who tells people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear; and someone who appreciates that an interdependent world can thrive only on win-win relationships, not zero-sum ones.

I can only hope that he does. Because if he doesn’t, all of you who voted for him — overlooking all of his obvious flaws — because you wanted radical, disruptive change, well, you’re going to get it.

I am in anguish, frightened for my country and for our unity. "

This is an "art" installation in the new mega-development City Center in Las Vegas. Eye of the beholder, and all that. I think it's called "Big Edge" and was created by Nancy Rubins. I didn't put "art" in quotes to denigrate the work of Ms. Rubins, but to indicate that I haven't the faintest idea what "art" is. Technically, I guess, it's anything made by human artifice.

I suppose it was meant to be mildly amusing. Anyway, our near family were all GM people so anything aimed at denigrating Fords or Dodges probably brought a smile. All I can remember was "If you can't afford a Ford, dodge a Dodge". What I can discover is that the prototype was printed in the “The Motor World” column in the New Zealand Truth newspaper of 22 July 1916:

“You might be advised that if you can’t afford a Ford, dodge a Dodge; but then, on the other hand, if you can’t afford a Dodge, dodge a Ford.”

My route today was carefully planned to not dodge a ford but to find one — Oallen Ford. What I have discovered along that route is that it was certainly someone else's intent to deny me that bit of fun. Now where there was a ford, witnessed by some scraps of its past, there is now a bridge; a bridge most evidently dodging a ford.

Every now and then you see a photo with the deepest blue sky you ever saw and you wonder how the photographer captured such a rich color. The photographer didn't see it. The camera didn't record it. The photo-editing software didn't produce it. Even HDR is not responsible. Huh?

No, those deepest blue skies are possible because Flickr owns and operates a system of Blue Chromatic Accumulators (BCA), commonly called "blue sponges." A BCA is a device that soaks up blue colors in the atmosphere, amplifies and stores them, and streams them to Flickr Support Services, where they are incorporated into the photos that later amaze you. Application of blue pixels is done on a random basis in a hidden "interestingness" laboratory. There is no way to request or schedule this service; Flickr is committed to treating all subscribers equally. This service is not made available to free accounts.

The use of this process is not meant to denigrate the laudable efforts of photographers worldwide, but to complement them. Flickr knows that happy subscribers are long-term subscribers, and one way to keep them happy is to "enhance" their landscape shots with extra blue coloring (if such enhancement is appropriate for the image). Enhancement has proven to improve the hit rates of images significantly and to produce comments that gush with enthusiasm.

The technology that accomplishes this is patented and the location of the pictured device is a closely-guarded secret. To say any more would be imprudent. However, there is a set of solar panels that look remarkably like this device in Utah, at the geotagged location.

11 March 1932. When the death of her companion Lytton Strachey makes her life seem purposeless, Carrington shoots herself in her bedroom with a borrowed shotgun, wearing Strachey’s dressing gown.

The revisionist tendency within the Carrington industry would now have us believe that Bloomsbury did not denigrate Carrington’s art, that her drift from serious work into decorative amateurism was her own free and valid choice, and that Strachey did his best to encourage her career.

But even her fictional appearances in her own lifetime (as Betty Bligh in Lewis’s Apes of God, or as Mary Bracegirdle in Huxley’s Crome Yellow) do not recognise her as an artist.

Virginia Woolf judged that Strachey “absorbed her, made her kill herself.” Carrington told her, “There is nothing left for me to do. I did everything for Lytton. But I’ve failed in everything else.” Her art might have saved her, had she not been so pigmyfied by years of servitude as Strachey’s housekeeper and pet.
