Dendrochilum tenellum is mainly found in mossy cloud forest growing on living trees where it forms large clumps.
Please click on image for 'a closer look', thank you.
When compared to the size of the white plant label on the left of the image, one can get an idea how small this beautiful pot plant is. Another exhibit at Mt. Coot-tha Orchid Show. There were in fact 4 different categories of plants on display.
Dendrochilum convallariiforme is a miniature flowering species orchid from the Philippines. The flowers are about 5mms across and a lovely salmon colour, arranged along the raceme in an interesting spiral formation. There are more than 50 flowers per inflorescence.
Dendrochilum wenzelii. An attractive and unusual appearing orchid from between 300 and 1000 meters in the Philippines. Photographed at University of California Botanical Garden, Berkeley, CA
This dendrobium has many names, the other being dendrobium lendleyi. It was purchased last spring and it grew 3 new PBs last summer. Last November I started its cold dry winter rest. I made sure to give it as much direct sun as possible. I got kind of nervous at the end of January, not really sure when this plant would begin to spike. I sprayed it lightly with water at first and slowly I saw the formation of spikes at the middle of the PBs. Then I started to water regularly as the spikes grew longer. There's just 2 spikes but together there are 28 flowers. They opened about 10 days ago and the flowers smell like hay, reminiscent of a Dendrochilum glumaceum.
I have to say that it's been a ray of sunshine for the end of May. Not so many flowers are left and this is a true accomplishment. I plan to water and feed it regularly, and give it a ton of sunshine. The leaves stayed pine green despite the supplemental lighting and direct sun.
These are from last year's show and I still have more to edit. Gotta get to work because this year's show will be here before too long now.

It's and orchid - "Dendrochilum sp "
Sorry for the bad focus, friends. I took this photo at Botanical Garden (Rio de Janeiro) in a cloudy and windy day.
The orchids are so tiny, no more that 0,5 cm each flower.
A miniature orchid from the Philippines which continues to just get bigger and bigger. From a tiny plant of few small bulbs, it has grown to over 60cms in width, and is perhaps my best specimen plant as far as being biggest for it's type and best flowered.

The plant does not have as many flowers as previous years but it still makes for a spectacular show. The flowers are also shorter in length than those of previous years.
Philippines. Orchidaceae. Coelogyne group. Strong pungent scent, not like other Dendrochilums. Mag x3
