Endemic to Borneo. Jeff Wood lists it as coming from Kalimantan and Sarawak (Mulu and Bario) which are on the other side of the range comprising Mt Ramau. This may be the first documentation of this species in Sabah.

This plant was outstanding last year but this year it is truly spectacular. There are more than 500 inflorescences of brick red flowers. The inflorescences are evenly displayed around the plant. The plant spans 24 inches across. The plant is in a 4-inch clay pot supported in a 6-inch square wood basket. The plant is grown under 50% shade and is fertilized weekly all year round.

A new species of Dendrochilum for me. We saw another plant on the Mossy Ridge. It was described by Jeff Wood in 1994 who says that it is very localised. He found it in an area 8 km Northwest of Long Pasia above the Maga River. We were not far away from that area. Being so close to the border with Sarawak and Brunei, Jeff speculated that it would also be found in the adjacent mountains across the borders.

Growing on Mount Rimau, Sipitang District, Sabah

The flowers are very small and measure 2-2.5mm across. Dendrochilum tenellum is mainly found in mossy cloud forest growing on living trees where it forms large clumps. Photographed at the Peter Black Conservatory, Victoria Esplanade, Palmerston North.

蘭目蘭科デンドロキラム・ウェンゼリー Dendrochilum wenzelii

An orchid species from Philippines, which grows at high mountainous altitudes and grows easily in cultivation. I originally paid $20 for a plant with 6 leaves and have grown it into this specimen over a period of about 20 years. It looks more like a clump of grass and the individual flowers are less than 1.5mm across. I have included pics of the whole plant and a few close ups of the flowers, which are quite interesting when seen large in comparison to their actual minute size.

Yellow form growing a 4-inch plastic basket with New Zealand Sphagnum Moss as the media.

Dendrochilum wenzelii Ames, Orchidaceae 5: 65 (1915)..
