First described in 2015. From the paper describing the species, "Dendrochilum hampelii is morphologically most similar to Dendrochilum propinquum, but it differs in a number of characteristics. Of the two cultivated individuals available for our study, one was of unrecorded provenance. The other allegedly originated from the Philippines. Observations of the species occurring in the wild in the Philippines in the northern provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental on the island of Mindanao confirmed this."
According to Jeff Wood in his book Dendrochillum of Borneo this is an interesting species which is known only from a few collections from the Long Pasia area of Sipitang District, Sabah. It is found in "low and open mossy ridge forest with a dense undergrowth of bamboo and rattan palms at around 1700 metres." This is exactly where we were. The mossy ridge (our name for this area) of Mt Rimau at about 1700 metres. A great find of a species which does not seem to be in cultivation.

This plant was purchased on May 9, 2012 at a Honolulu Orchid Society meeting. The plant has sentimental value to me as it was the last plant that I purchased from Wilbur Chang before his passing on May 18, 2012. Almost all of my bulbophyllums and dendrochilums in my collection came from Wilbur.

The largest of the genus, related to Coelogyne. I've found this species to be a very easy grower. Nice scent of vanilla, but with a bit of soapiness.
Blooms are presented well, in a slightly twisting pendulous raceme. But you really have to get in there before the blooms start looking like orchid flowers! From the side, the individual blooms, hidden under their cowl-like floral bracts, look like hermit crabs.
Each flower has a natural spread of about 1.3cm, and spikes I counted varied from about 82 to 112 blooms each. With 24 spikes this year, by the time they're all bloomed out, this plant will have produced approximately 2300 blooms in this year's blooming. Currently in a 12" pot.

These four successive photos show the growth of this wonderful plant from 2010 to 2016. It got a CCM/AOS cultural award in 2012 but is now several times larger, thanks to Cindy's excellent care.

SUBGENUS Platyclinis SECTION Platyclinis [Benth.] Pfitzer
Distribution: Sumatera (42 SUM)
Lifeform: Pseudobulb epiphyte
An orchid species from Philippines, which grows at high mountainous altitudes and grows easily in cultivation. I originally paid $20 for a plant with 6 leaves and have grown it into this specimen over a period of about 20 years. It looks more like a clump of grass and the individual flowers are less than 1.5mm across. I have included pics of the whole plant and a few close ups of the flowers, which are quite interesting when seen large in comparison to their actual minute size.

Every few years this plant is bursting with blooms giving a fireworks display. The plant measures more than 26 inches across. It is growing in a 6-inch square wooden basket.
