Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation, 1876-1968, part of the the History Galleries, explores the years following the end of Reconstruction to show how the nation struggled to define the status of African Americans.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, was established in December 2003 and opened its permanent home in September 2016. The 350,000-square-foot, 10-story (five above and five below ground) was built to the postmodern design of Phil Freelon's Freelon Group, Sir David Adjaye's Adjaye Associates and Davis Brody Bond. The above ground floors feature an inverted step pyramid surrounded by a bronze architectural scrim, which reflects a crown used in Yoruba culture. With more than 40,000 objects in its collection, although only about 3,500 items are on display, the NMAAHC is the world's largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture.
The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

I am surrounded by things that help me do things: tools, sharply defined. The simplest of these do one or two things, and do them well, and fail only when they are set to the wrong task, or at the end of their useful life.
The most complex do many things - they possess an ever-growing list of talents limited only by imagination (and sometimes, memory) - and they do their work only as well as I can guide them in their work. When they fail, only my own knowledge (and the use of other tools, themselves vastly more simple than these) puzzles out the error. And with a replaced part, a little care and polish here, or a different approach, all is right in the world again.

Led by the University of Buckingham, this event series included workshops and events around Dickens’s last unfinished novel, ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’. These events contributed to an ogoing international project which explores this unfinished work through a reading group and blog developed from a digital re-release of Dickens's original monthly instalments, becoming a crowd-sourced whodunnit inquiry into which character the public believe committed the murder of Edwin Drood.
I thought this week's Macro Monday theme was kinda of difficult. Especially since it was my first one after being invited to the group. :)
Anyway, I was thinking about refreshment and I happened to spot this rock on my desk. I picked it up from Honeymoon Island in Florida the last time I was on vacation and I thought it was a good way to define refreshment, especially since I took it in to work to take the shot.
It also makes a nice paperweight. :)

Fictional narrative portraiture speaks to people in a way fashion or documentary photography can’t. It introduces characters and creates stories that don’t exist, allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks themselves. By including minimal context and providing no prompt with the images, they stand completely alone, and when viewed individually, beg for a story to be told.
In my series, I explore the field of cinematic portraiture and fabricate moments that might show a small piece of a larger untold narrative. I invite you fill in the blanks with your own version of the story.
