I was about to post up some stuff from Skye, as is always the way your latest trip seems to eclipse the last one as it is fresh in the memory and certain things get lost for a while. An email regarding this image jogged my memory as I wanted to post this on here, this was another shot just before a sea storm at St Monans in Fife, the irregular shaped breakwater standing up to absolutely everything that is thrown at it by nature, hence the title.

B/W to my mind is perfectly suited to this sort of stuff to accentuate shape and is normally something I'd go for here but the colours were appealing at the time of shooting this so this (sadly) became a bit of an afterthought, however the more I look at it I think I prefer this one for many different reasons, the stormy skies being absolutely ideal for this type of shot.

I'm late for posting an image to celebrate the Winter Solstice but it's actually more appropriate that I post today, the first day after the shortest day of the year, the first day that the sun is getting stronger and the light longer. Because that's what needs to be emphasised most at this juncture in our lives, the human race has entered a dark time just as the natural world has, and just as in the natural world with the new sun's journey towards distant summer, humanity will find it's way out of the darkness, we just have to keep our own inner fires burning, let our own light shine out into the world by whatever means.

That tree somehow found a roothold upon that vast spoil heap at Dinorwic slate quarry, an environment totally inimical to life...you would think, but life said no, I'm gonna grow! And in the millennia's to come that barren spoil heap will become buried beneath the dynamic, vibrant skin of the living and dead of nature, just has happened so many times before, the cycle never stops, dark then light, light then dark. It's at the transition points, the moments of change, that we learn; about ourselves, about life because that's when we find out what is really of worth in life and in ourselves. There's nothing we can do to stop the changes but we can do the only thing that's of worth at this time, and that is to learn, adapt and grow, to become more than we are so we can carry on experiencing this wonder that is called 'living!'.

So, although the world seems to have turned into one giant, overwhelming spoil heap, take heart, be defiant and live, let your inner tree burst forth...and don't let the bastards grind you down, the fearful and hateful love being fearful and hateful, don't join them, laugh and move on, leave them in the darkness of the past. :-)

Have a cool Yule everyone!

I wanted to post something as a defiant gesture to the tragic events of 24 hours ago at the Manchester Arena so please don't favour, but leave a comment by all means.

By being here tonight at the concert I wanted to show that the evil in our world will never overcome the goodness in people and I include all in that statement. The concert will go ahead as planned and this is just my way of showing that we will not be beaten by deranged, misguided individuals who have no regard for life. I'm sure Jim Kerr will say a few words at the start and I will be there to hear them. Manchester is my home town and I'm proud to be a Manc but the loss of young lives in this manner has saddenened me greatly.

Smoke & Mirrors Lilith, almost called her S&M Lilith, but that conjures up a whole different vibe; although, this doll could pull it off, lol. She's wearing Defiant Rayna's fashion which I had wanted ever since it was released in 2016. I was finally able to find it last year, and I still absolutely love everything about it!

Every time this doll is in front of my camera lens, I can't help but take a ton of photos. There are certain dolls that just love the camera, and I say that like they are real live people, but it's true, she is so photogenic. I find that her twin from this collection photographs the same way.

If I ever pare my collection way down, this doll would not be one to go, in fact she will be one of the last to go.

"Defiant"

Branch-less trees standing defiantly amongst their felled neighbours at Devichoys Woods (maybe because they are too small to fell).

Having left the house well before sunrise, it soon became apparent that I'd have to work hard for decent shots on this outing!...

A quick weather check before I left revealed thick cloud - eliminating the chance of a colourful sunrise and as it turned out, I had very flat light to work with.

Without the light, I hoped for some mist to provide mood and atmosphere. I knew the chance of it was slim after a relatively warm night, but I drove around the valleys in my area on the lookout anyway.

Conceding to the fact that conditions were less than spectacular, I drove to Kennall Vale. Having been there a few times in better conditions, I was a little uninspired and didn't take a single shot!

So I decided to head to Devichoys Woods - which happens to be close to home, but a place I'd not yet explored!

While wandering the woods, I walked into a cleared area - with just a few small branch-less trees in the middle. I was immediately drawn to them. The felled trees provided ideal foreground interest and lead in lines. The flat, grey sky was actually an advantage for this shot - as the trees may otherwise be lost in front of textured clouds.

This guy lives in the trees in my backyard. I know him from the piece of his ear that is ripped. He often climbs up the feeder pole and helps himself to the suet. He's very defiant and not afraid of me anymore!

My weeding in the front flower bed disturbed this Praying mantis. There are three species found in Missouri (Carolina, Chinese, and European) and while their egg cases are easily distinguished, the adults, not so much. This one was 1.5 inches (4 cm) long but is perhaps a youth from the looks of its upturned abdomen. I relocated it to the back yard's milkweed plants that need a predator against the aphids.

Since I was already on my knees weeding, it was easy to grab the camera and get on my belly for this closeup shot. The eye piece is always preferable to the back screen. The overcast day made a diffused even light.

Abandoned house in Ochre Pit Cove, Newfoundland. I've posted shots of this house before, and I try to check it out when ever I'm in the area. I was out there this weekend during some very cold, windy weather. The old place shook, creaked and groaned while I was there, as if it knows it's time is up, but not quite willing to give in yet, raging against the inevitable. As you can see, time and the elements are slowly taking their toll, but despite that, this old beauty still stands. Defiant.
