I saw this poster earlier this month near the Keret House at the intersection of Chłodna and Żelazna streets in Warsaw.

It’s the work of an organisation called Reduta Dobrego Imienia, who seem to be a self-styled Polish version of the Anti-Defamation League. They’re complaining about the fact that, in their opinion, Paweł Pawlikowski’s film “Ida” (which revolves around the murder of a Jewish family by their Slavic neighbours in occupied Poland during World War 2) doesn’t make it sufficiently clear that Germany was responsible for the Holocaust.

Their main concern is that international viewers who know little or nothing about Polish history will come out of the film thinking that Poland was to blame.

As such, they have also launched a petition calling for the film to carry title cards reminding viewers that Poland was under occupation by Nazi Germany at the time, that only a tiny minority of the Polish Jews who died in the Holocaust were killed by their Polish neighbours, that hiding Jews was punishable by death during the German occupation etc….

While it’s true that there’s a fair amount of anti-Polish prejudice and even hate out there, and most of it is indeed based on ignorance, I very much doubt if starting a protest (that’s guaranteed in advance to be futile) against a Polish film that’s proved to be extremely popular in Poland as well as picking up numerous awards at home and abroad - and contains nothing that’s inherently anti-Polish or historically inaccurate - is the best way of doing something about it.

"Ida" is an awesome movie that fully deserves all the plaudits it has received....

I met these two, very friendly boys today on their way to the super store. Both didn't understand much of what I said, so we used an translation app. So that worked out pretty good.

Both boys are here since 30 days and had to flee from their homeland, becaused they and their family suffered racial defamation back there.

As I know that in these days a great deal of Germans like #Pegida (and many others, that don't go to demonstrations) are against refugees in our country, I hope that Bujar and Alberto won't have to flee again. From here.

Ethical issues

Novelists use their friends and relatives in their work so long as they don't "identify" them too closely, otherwise there's fallout at either the domestic level or at the legal level in terms of defamation. In the medium of journalism, we have, in this day and age, reporters unethically prying into people's privacy in order to keep their jobs while their bosses sell the story for commercial gain. Increasingly, there are ethical issues surrounding drawing people in public, just as there with surveillance filming for security purposes. Here, I've sketched adults with impunity, in an area which would not have been possible using photography. My sketching would not be possible, for example, with children - someone would have stopped me. All my subjects were distracted by either pain or worry, many sitting stock still. Unlike ordinary people, these ones sat still, either drugged from pain or from medication.

Issues of permission

There was a time when verbal permission to photograph or sketch was okay. It's only natural and polite and civilised when you're obviously invading someone else's space. Now, in this age of litigation, release forms are a reflexive response: for permission to use people's intellectual property as well as using their image. There are however ambiguities: I can photograph anyone or anything in a public place with more or less impunity. So far, I can also sketch anyone or anything in a public place. A public hospital is moot because the property is private (and of course I would desist if asked by the doctors in the case of the ER). I sketch people as secondary subjects in my streetscapes; I don't make 'portraits' of them as individuals.

People as part of Urban sketching

Buildings and streetscapes have become 'straightforward' material for Urban Sketching, while people are increasingly subject to qualification: formal Urban Sketching now excludes poses models, life drawing class sketching, portraits, though it seems to be okay for established urban sketchers to include them in their online work. Contrast this with symposium workshops where sketching people is considered important. There is a sub-genre of sketching people (i.e. portraits) on public transport which somehow slips through the Urban Sketching criterion net because it raises questions about whether the model was "posed" or not. If they sit still, paid or unpaid, in a private setting (e.g. home or studio), this is not okay; if they sit still in a public setting (having given permission or not), this is. I''m not entering in to this debate at all; I work hard at my portrait and figure drawing skills but try and separate (at least in my mind) those sketches from anything I classify as formal "urban sketching".

Metaphysical questions

Do I stop sketching if my subject has an accident or is in danger? Of course; I'm obliged to be a Good Samaritan and stop what I'm doing if someone is in danger. Some paparazzi photographers might not. Do I stop sketching my subject if s/he is suffering? A moot point. There is nowhere "safer" to be than an Emergency Room, so I know the well-being of my subjects is constantly being monitored. My subject is not 'suffering' or in danger (though they might be screaming with pain), so I keep sketching and those around me 'look the other way'. If the screaming keeps up, the ER staff eventually wheel them away in order to 'keep the peace' in their workarea.

All of us present sought to ignore the screams of pain of those around us. We ignored the screams of pain in order to protect ourselves at a private level. At a public level, there was personally nothing we could do to assuage that pain, since they were being monitored by doctors far more expert than us.

And there's the issue of public space in hospitals and private space in hospitals. Obviously a public waiting space in a hospital is more acceptable than sketching in a private hospital space such as a ward.

Was sketching people in a hospital waiting room an unacceptable instance of exploiting people's vulnerability? There are parallels with sketching urban people in distress, for example, homeless people or beggars. In the artistic tradition of Realism (and for example in the area of social justice, where the advertisement to a wider public of injustice is called for), 'exploiting' this situation in the name of capturing contemporary tranche de vie urban life is a strong force. Urban sketchers very often feel obliged to repay the honour of sketching a homeless person or beggar with money and certainly I've seen the advice of sketching with someone else rather than sketching alone in these situations.

According to Greek and Roman myth, a musical competition was held between the god Apollo and the satyr Marsyas, a contest that Apollo won, his skill with the lyre judged greater than Marsyas’ with the aulos, a double flute. As victor, Apollo meted out the punishment, skinning Marsyas alive for having dared to challenge a god. This final act of the story was represented in multiple artistic media in the ancient world, including life-size sculpture, invariably showing Marsyas tied to a tree, awaiting his fate. Interest in the story was renewed in the Renaissance, and in the 16th century artists began to show the satyr bound upside down, an iconographical choice borrowed perhaps from the pittura infamante (defamation portrait) genre common at the time, or meant to resemble the pose of a slaughtered pig. Apollo is shown here tying Marsyas to a tree, the goat hooves clearly visible, while pinning the satyr to the ground with his leg. The statue recalls a marble sculpture of a similar scheme by Venetian artist Antonio Corradini (1688-1752) executed in the early 18th century, although whether The Ringling example is a simplified copy or reworking is unclear.

Thanks for posting this pitiful attempt to excuse America for it's past...

It is never admitted, yet clearly stated, the aggression began with the invasion of the Europeans. An invasion warrants any subsequent actions placed on those invading our territory. This was not uninhabited land. ANY person who cares about their land and it's people would kill to defend it. Isn't that what started this war on Iraq afterall? The retaliation on Afghanistan following 9/11?

His neglect to realize Micmac and other tribal women were indeed sterilized during what was considered, "routine injections" during physicals shows his lack of research on this issue. No mention of the boarding schools either, "destroy the savage to save the man". How about our very first president and his famous quote "only good indian is a dead indian" ?

Throughout the following article, germs are to blame for the decimation of N8V people across this continent according to the author. Not genocide. If he conducted more thorough research, he would realize the germs were intentionally delivered to certain tribes including our own. Reject the Lie of White "Genocide" Against Native Americans

Few opinions I've expressed on air have produced a more indignant, outraged reaction than my repeated insistence that the word "genocide" in no way fits as a description of the treatment of Native Americans by British colonists or, later, American settlers.

I've never denied that the 400 year history of American contact with the Indians includes many examples of white cruelty and viciousness --- just as the Native Americans frequently (indeed, regularly) dealt with the European newcomers with monstrous brutality and, indeed, savagery. In fact, reading the history of the relationship between British settlers and Native Americans its obvious that the blood-thirsty excesses of one group provoked blood thirsty excesses from the other, in a cycle that listed with scant interruption for several hundred years.

But none of the warfare (including an Indian attack in 1675 that succeeded in butchering a full one-fourth of the white population of Connecticut, and claimed additional thousands of casualties throughout New England) on either side amounted to genocide. Colonial and, later, the American government, never endorsed or practiced a policy of Indian extermination; rather, the official leaders of white society tried to restrain some of their settlers and militias and paramilitary groups from unnecessary conflict and brutality.

Moreover, the real decimation of Indian populations had nothing to do with massacres or military actions, but rather stemmed from infectious diseases that white settlers brought with them at the time they first arrived in the New World.

UCLA professor Jared Diamond, author of the universally acclaimed bestseller "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies," writes:

"Throughout the Americas, diseases introduced with Europeans spread from tribe to tribe far in advance of the Europeans themselves, killing an estimated 95 percent of the pre-Columbian Native American population. The most populous and highly organized native societies of North America, the Mississippian chiefdoms, disappeared in that way between 1492 and the late 1600's, even before Europeans themselves made their first settlement on the Mississippi River (page 78)....

"The main killers were Old World germs to which Indians had never been exposed, and against which they therefore had neither immune nor genetic resistance. Smallpox, measles, influenza, and typhus rank top among the killers." (page 212).

"As for the most advanced native societies of North America, those of the U.S. Southeast and the Mississippi River system, their destruction was accomplished largely by germs alone, introduced by early European explorers and advancing ahead of them" (page 374)

Obviously, the decimation of native population by European germs represents an enormous tragedy, but in no sense does it represent a crime. Stories of deliberate infection by passing along "small-pox blankets" are based exclusively on two letters from British soldiers in 1763, at the end of the bitter and bloody French and Indian War. By that time, Indian populations (including those in the area) had already been terribly impacted by smallpox, and there's no evidence of a particularly devastating outbreak as a result of British policy.

For the most part, Indians were infected by devastating diseases even before they made direct contact with Europeans: other Indians who had already been exposed to the germs, carried them with them to virtually every corner of North America and many British explorers and settlers found empty, abandoned villages (as did the Pilgrims) and greatly reduced populations when they first arrived.

Sympathy for Native Americans and admiration for their cultures in no way requires a belief in European or American genocide. As Jared Diamond's book (and countless others) makes clear, the mass migration of Europeans to the New World and the rapid displacement and replacement of Native populations is hardly a unique interchange in human history. On six continents, such shifting populations – with countless cruel invasions and occupations and social destructions and replacements - have been the rule rather than the exception.

The notion that unique viciousness to Native Americans represents our "original sin" fails to put European contact with these struggling Stone Age societies in any context whatever, and only serves the purposes of those who want to foster inappropriate guilt, uncertainty and shame in young Americans.

A nation ashamed of its past will fear its future.

One of the most urgent needs in culture and education for the United States of America is discarding the stupid, groundless and anti-American lies that characterize contemporary political correctness.

The right place to begin is to confront, resist and reject the all-too-common line that our rightly admired forebears involved themselves in genocide.

The early colonists and settlers can hardly qualify as perfect but describing them in Hitlerian, mass-murdering terms represents an act of brain-dead defamation.

Kottarakkara Thampuran(1555 to 1605)

This story is taken from Ramayana. Kottarakara Thampuran wrote Ramanattam (which transformed itself into Kathakali) by setting the Ramayana in eight parts. This story is one of them in which not Rama but Parasurama steals the thunder with some great performances.

The story is from the Bala Kanda of Ramayana. Sri Rama and his brothers were growing up in Ayodhya. Rama and Lakshmana were interested in hunting in forests while Bharata and Shatrughna were more interested in looking after the gardens and estates attached to the palaces. At this time, Sage Vishwamitra, who got sick of the troubles created by a demoness called Thataka came to visit Dasharatha. Dasharatha invited Viswamitra and told him that he is ready to fulfill any wish of the sage. Vishwamitra requested that the king lend him his son Rama for the express purpose of destroying certain demons. Hearing this Dasharatha was terrified. How can a young boy destroy demons? At this time Sage Vasishta interfered and told Dasharatha to keep his word and thereby the two boys, Rama and Lakshmana were sent along with Vishawmitra to the forests.

On the way Vishwamitra advised the boys two mantras called Bala and Athibala. On Vishwamitra's orders Rama killed Thataka. Again during a yaga conducted by the sage two demons, Subahu and Maricha, came to spoil the Yaga. Subahu was killed while Maricha was swept away to sea by Rama's arrows.

Then Vishwamitra took the boys to Janaka's palace. On the way the Sage told the boys the story of Ahalya who had turned into a stone due to a curse of Sage Gautama. Rama gently kicks the stone shown by Vishwamatra and Ahalya comes back to life and goes back to live with Gautama. Rama lifted a huge bow called Thrayambaka(Shiva's bow) and broke it also, and having passed the royal test married Sita. Hearing this, Dasharatha came from Ayodhya along with his other children. Hence Lakshmana married Urmila, Bharatha married Mandavi, Shatrughna married Suthakirti, all from Janaka's palace.

Now comes the climax. When the entourage was returning to Ayodhya, sage Parasurama came in their way and stopped them. 'Areda Natannidunnu?' or 'Who walks?', he asks. He ridiculed Rama for breaking Shiva's bow. He said that since you have broken Shiva's bow, you should at least be capable of tying my bow. Rama tied the Bow easily and proceeded on his way while the defamed and defeated Parasurama proceeded for doing further Tapas.

In this story all the royalty have pacha vesham and others are minuku. Thataka is Kari and other demons are Kathi.

National BJP leader Sukhminder Pal Singh Grewal, today alleged that the arrest of the former vice-chancellor of the Punjab Technical University (PTU) Dr Rajnish Arora was a political vendetta of the Congress party and a planned conspiracy to defame RSS.

In a statement issued today All India Secretary Kisan Morcha, Grewal said that Dr Arora in a personality of high integrity and full of honesty and during his tenure as VC he has hit hard of the education mafia running in Punjab and inside the PTU.

“The Congress government by arresting Arora, has played in the hands of the same mafia. A dean working in the PTU campus is also assisting this mafia. The Captain Amarinder Singh government, on the other hand, has tried to use the case to defame highly sacred RSS,” said Grewal.

He said that there total transparency was kept in the recruitments done in the tenure of Arora and the allegations on which he has been arrested are totally baseless and would fell flat in the court.

“If you look at the FIR, those persons have been made accused who has opposed bad-deeds and corruption of the dean. The Vigilance Bureau is also playing in the gallery of this power-full dean,” said Grewal.

The BJP leader has demanded a CBI probe in the case.

Several American Jewish groups aren’t laughing about a comedy routine performed at Sunday night’s Oscar awards. Both the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center lambasted the awards show over a sketch starring the foul-mouthed teddy bear "Ted” – the star of a movie by the same name – and actor Mark Wahlberg.

In the routine, Ted – voiced by host Seth MacFarlane – tells Wahlberg that in order to “work in this town” (Hollywood) he must be Jewish. He then adds, “I was born Theodore Shapiro and I would like to donate to Israel and continue to work in Hollywood forever.”

The ADL’s Abe Foxman called the routine “offensive and not remotely funny.” “To many who know little or nothing about Hollywood or the falsity of such Jewish stereotypes, there’s a much higher potential for the ‘Jews control Hollywood’ myth to be accepted as fact,” an ADL statement said.

“It only reinforces stereotypes which legitimize anti-Semitism. It is sad and disheartening that the Oscars awards show sought to use anti-Jewish stereotypes for laughs,” Foxman's statement continued. He also expressed regrets that MacFarlane and the Academy Awards producers didn’t show greater sensitivity about airing a sketch that so reinforced age-old stereotypes about Jewish control of the film industry.

The segment was also criticized by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which said, “It is unfortunate that at a time when anti-Semitism is so prevalent throughout the world that Seth McFarlane used the pulpit of the Oscars, before an audience of more than a billion people, to contribute to the myth that Jews own Hollywood. The Oscars are transmitted to every corner of the globe, even to such places where such hateful myths are believed as fact. Every comedian is entitled to wide latitude, but no one should get a free pass for helping to promote anti-Semitism.”

While there are fine Jewish actors and movie executives on both sides of the “do Jews control Hollywood debate,” few would question the historical Jewish influence in Tinsel town. Never the less, McFarlane’s Oscar sketch only serves to reinforce a negative stereotype that he would dare not have risked against a group more “favored” by Hollywood. Can you imagine the outrage in the mainstream media if “Ted” had said, “to work in this town he must be Muslim or Gay?” Pray that such stereotypical characterizations of Jews and their influence in Hollywood will be rendered unacceptable and that comedians will refrain from such cheap shots against the Jewish community.

Thousands of police and residents took part in silent demonstrations in Berlin on Friday, June 7, to honor the officer killed in a stabbing attack by an Afghan immigrant in Mannheim last week.

The 25-year-old asylum seeker had seriously injured five participants at an Islam-critical rally and killed a 30-year-old police officer by stabbing him in the neck.

Germany has a major problem with violent crime in connection with uncontrolled migration. These include homicides, grievous bodily harm and gang rapes. The perpetrators are mostly foreigners or Germans with a migration background, often from the Islamic milieu. In Berlin alone, there are an average of ten knife attacks every day.

Large sections of the government and the media play down this problem and leave it largely to the population and the police to deal with it. Anyone who openly addresses these conditions is defamed as a racist or right-wing extremist AFD sympathiser.

Taiwan civil servants and supporters clogged Taipei streets Saturday, protesting what they say is the government's defamation of public sector workers during ongoing pension reform efforts. More than 110,000 demonstrators gather on Taipei's Ketagalan Boulevard to protest pension reform.

When I stopped at Malone Motors, which has one of the largest flags in town, the gentleman who came out of the building asked me if I was upset the flag was desecrated. There is a large rip about a foot long, between the top row of red and the white row beneath it. I asked if he had another ordered and he said yes. He also said it takes about six months to get one. Thinking about it later, I don't know why he called it desecrated. Desecration is a deliberate act to destroy, defame and to hold an object in disgust. This flag is wounded. The wound obtained because it is flying high and proud. It will be replaced, but we should also honor our wounded.

The Dallas County DA’s office welcomed Roberta Clark of the Anti-Defamation League to the office for a training on “Why Diversity Matters.” Nearly 300 prosecutors and investigators attended the training.
