Anti Lese Majeste / 112 rally at Democracy Monument.
“Counting One to Million … Returning Power to People”

A confrontation between police and pro-democracy protesters turned ugly late Saturday with a number of injuries and arrests, following a peaceful protest earlier in the day at Democracy Monument in Bangkok.
Tensions had been high all evening but most rally participants had dispersed peacefully, with a promise to stage another rally next Saturday, when a showdown between a small group of demonstrators and police turned violent.
One video that was widely circulated online showed officers in full riot gear chasing down a man wearing what appeared to be a yellow volunteer medic vest, with at least one officer beating him with a truncheon as he fell to the ground. His condition was not known.
Numerous loud noises were heard, believed to be from homemade explosive devices and firecrackers. Police said later that as many as 20 officers had been injured and seven demonstrators arrested and taken to the Chana Songkhram station.
The clash came after an earlier standoff at the City Pillar Shrine, to which the demonstrators had walked after their afternoon gathering at Democracy Monument. Eyewitnesses reported bottles being thrown and smoke filling the air, a lot of it from fireworks. Three people were reported injured, including a journalist said to have been struck by a smoke grenade. It was not clear who threw the projectile.
At 8pm, the protesters — some of them carrying their own police-style riot shields — asked police to turn off lights on their crowd-control vehicles but their demand was not met. Guards moved to the front line and clashed with police, who later asked them to negotiate.
Finally, the police agreed to turn down the lights and to allow a small ceremony to be held.
Attapol “Kru Yai” Buapat, another key protester from Khon Kaen province, represented the demonstrators in paying respects inside the shrine. He emerged a few minutes later.
“I paid respects to the shrine, praying for it to protect Ratsadon [citizens] in fighting for the right that should have been theirs. We will return on Feb 20 to demand the release of our friends,” he said. (Story continues below)
The gathering that began around 3pm at Democracy Monument was staged to demand the abolition of the royal defamation law and the release from detention of four key members of the movement.
The protest “Counting one to million … Returning Power to People” attracted a few hundred people.
Activist Panupong “Mike” Jadnok, a key member of the Ratsadon group, vowed not to back down if there were any attempts to break up the rally.
“Now is not the time to fear, to step back. We will only fight today — there will not be an order to retreat from me,” he said.
“Whoever wants to be on the frontline, let’s be prepared. If anything happens, let state officers start first so we will not lose our legitimacy in our push for democracy.”
Pol Col Thotsaphol Ampaipipatkul, chief of the Samran Rat police station, used loudspeakers to ask demonstrators to stop the gathering as it was in violation of the emergency decree and the disease control law.
His announcement was met with boos and the beating of pots and pans by protesters, a tactic borrowed from anti-coup demonstrators in Myanmar, who believe it helps chase away evil spirits.
At the foot of the monument, the demonstrators placed drawings of Arnon Nampa, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, Somyot Prueksakasemsuk and Patiwat “Mor Lam Bank” Saraiyaem.
The four were denied bail during a pre-trial hearing on Feb 9 after prosecutors formally indicted them on charges of lese majeste and other lesser charges. The court cited as reasons the severe punishment of the charges and the tendency of the accused to repeat the offences.
Their supporters argued that the court’s rationale ran counter to the principle of “presumed innocent”, and assumed the four are guilty as charged even before the trial begins, which could ne months from now.
Surrounded by hundreds of police including a bomb squad, the demonstrators on Saturday afternoon removed hundreds of plant pots neatly put there last week by City Hall, supposedly to prevent people from assembling there.
Some of the pots were then used to form the number “112”, along with coconut shells from several provinces.
For the progressive movement, coconut shells symbolise a lack of perspective among conservatives, who feel content with the status quo regardless of progressive values and developments elsewhere in the world.
It stems from a Thai saying about a frog who has lived under a coconut shell for so long that he thinks it is perfectly fine and comfortable and doesn’t want it lifted ever, simply because he isn’t aware what’s going on outside his shell.
The highlight activity was a 30mx30m red banner on which participants are asked to write their thoughts about the government and the country.
The banner was then hoisted up and wrapped around the monument.
Most of the messages on the banner were about problems involving Section 112 of the Criminal Code, the demand that their friends be released, and the economic hardships they were facing in the wake of the Covid pandemic.

This is titled after the ABC show “What would you do?” On the episode that aired 9/24/11, there was an actor posing as a bounty hunter. This man had a fake badge, that looked really cheap. Any hew, he gets unsuspected people to help him perform illegal acts against an innocent, single mother.
He gets one woman to take her purse.
He gets another woman to put drugs in her drink.
He gets another woman to actually take her baby, in it's cart.
He gets a man to block her, as he takes her baby.
He does all this by presenting a fake badge and telling a bunch of lies. These people, instead of realizing the seriousness of their illegal and immoral acts, try to justify them.
Here is a link the the episode: abc.go.com/watch/what-would-you-do/SH5555951/VD5581772/wh... it's the 2nd segment in the show.

Protest Is Part of the National ‘Families Belong Together’ Day of Action With More Than 710 Events Nationwide
-- On Saturday, June 30th, [residents will rally at various locations as part of the Families Belong Together national day of action to protest the Trump Administration’s policy of forcibly separating children from their parents, the detention of families, and the fact that the Trump Administration has failed to reunite thousands of children with their parents.

The [CITY] protest is part of a National “Families Belong Together” Day of Action featuring more than 710 events in all 50 states and an anchor protest in Lafayette Square in Washington DC. Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate across the country. Specifically, the protesters will demand that the Trump Administration:
•Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated. ICE must release parents immediately so that ORR can reunify them with their children.
•End family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.
•End ‘Zero Humanity.’ Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.

The effortlessly suave Romanian-born actor Pál Jávor (1902-1959) was one of the first stars of the Hungarian sound cinema. His glamorous and highly successful stage and film career was broken, first by the German invasion of Hungary and again by the Communist government after the war. He moved to Hollywood where he only could play bit parts.
Pál Jávor (sometimes credited as Paul Javor) was born Pál Jermann in Arad, Austria-Hungary (now Romania), in 1902. He was the lovechild of Pál Jermann, a 53-year-old cashier and Katalin Spannenberg, a 17-year-old servant. His parents, who only married after his birth, had 3 children to care for, which made life hard for the family, who often moved. His mother later opened a grocery store in Arad's Kossuth street. Jávor was a student in a state operated gymnasium, but often played truant to see movies in the town's two theatres. From very early on, he wanted to break away from his homeland, and from the simple life his mother wished for him. During World War I, he ran away to serve on the front as a courier. He was caught and transported back months later by military police. In 1918, after working as a junior reporter for the Aradi Hírlap, he set out to emigrate to Denmark, so he could act in the Danish films he idolized. As the state offered free train tickets to anyone who wished to leave the country, he willingly chose self-banishment from Romania, but his ticket was revoked in Budapest. Jávor, now seeking to gain fame in the Hungarian capital, went to study in the Academy of Drama. Living in great poverty, and expelled from the Academy for unknown reasons, he earned his degree in the Actor's Guild school, in 1922. Jávor acted in various theatres in Budapest, Székesfehérvár and several other small towns, but his dissolute lifestyle made him hard to work with. After being banned from the Guild in 1926, he acted in small roles around the country, and later in Budapest, helped by mentors from the theatrical world, and slowly waking the interest of the critics. He was a member of the Vígszínház, the Comedy Theatre of Budapest, between 1930–1935, and the National Theatre between 1935-1944.
In 1929, Pál Jávor finally got the opportunity to appear in the cinema. He then starred in Csak egy kislány van a világon/The Only Girl in the World (Béla Gaál, 1929) opposite Márta Eggerth, also in her film debut. It was to be the last Hungarian silent film, but, ironically, this was also the first one to feature sound. The film’s technicians got hold of the technology by the last days of shooting. This allowed Jávor to sing a song in one of the scenes, which, combined with his charm and temperament made him a star of the country's waking film industry. D Lewis at IMDb: “Despite some slow passages and ellipses in the story caused by missing footage, Csak egy kislány van a világon is an inspired effort with some genuinely great things in it. Director Gaál would go, with considerable success, into comedies in the 1930s, but would end his days, regrettably, in either the Dachau Concentration Camp or at the hands of Nazis on a Budapest street, depending on which account one accepts.” Jávor took the lead role in the first Hungarian sound film, the comedy Kék Bálvány/A blue idol (Lajos Lázár, 1931) with Oscar Beregi Sr. Then followed a smaller part in the second Hungarian sound film, the comedy Hyppolit, a lakáj/Hyppolit, the Butler (István Székely aka Steve Sekely, 1931) starring Gyula Csortos and Gyula Kabos, which became a huge box office hit. Director Istvan Szekeley left Hungary in 1938 to relocate in Hollywood, where he continued to work under the name of Steve Sekely. Hyppolit, a lakáj was shown again in Hungarian cinemas in 1945, 1956 and 1972, and later also returned several times on TV. After this success, the suave and charming Jávor quickly became an idol of the 1930s, appearing in numerous films, but he also remained popular on stage. However, the sudden fame weighed heavily on the young actor, leading to him returning to alcohol. His frequent clashes with colleagues and journalists, resulted in numerous scandals. His life was eased when he met and Olga Landesmann, a widow with two children. After their marriage in 1934, she provided him with a home and family. Among his best known films of that period are the drama Marika (Viktor Gertler, 1938), and the comedy A Noszty fiú esete Tóth Marival/ I Married for Love (Steve Sekely (as István Székely), 1938). There is also a German-language version of the latter, Ihr Leibhusar/Her personal Hussar (Hubert Marischka, 1938), in which he co-stars with Magda Schneider and Paul Kemp. He appeared in more foreign films, including the Austrian-German production Donauschiffer/Danube boat (Robert A. Stemmle, 1940) with Hilde Krahl, and the Italian Inferno giallo/Yellow Hell (Géza von Radványi, 1942) with Fosco Giachetti.
After 1940, World War II slowly became part of life for Hungarian citizens and the theatre world alike, working conditions became increasingly harsher, which Pál Jávor could hardly bear. Being anxious about the regulation of the theatre, and the defaming of fellow actors, he often clashed with superiors. Charged with making unlawful political comments, he became the target of the Gestapo. After hiding in Balatonfüred and Agárd, he returned to Budapest, thinking that the danger of arrest was over. After another quarrel with the Actor's Guild's manager, the Guild suspended him from practicing the profession, and also banned his films. After the German invasion of Hungary, Pál Jávor was arrested by Arrow party members. Jávor was first held in the prison of Sopronkőhida under dire conditions, then transported to Germany. After being liberated by Allied forces, he awaited for the end of the war in Tann and Pfarrkirchen in Austria. His confinement lasted over 9 months, about which he wrote a recollection published in 1946. After the war Jávor found that the theatre world had largely rejected him, offering him only a few roles. The intellectual and cultural cleansing of the new Communist government left him virtually no possibilities. In, 1946, Jávor made a successful tour of Romania, and then travelled to the United States. After arriving in the United States, he was met with great acclaim by the emigrant community, but despite this, he could only arrange small comedic and musical shows, which he found humiliating. Slowly sinking into depression and reaching again for alcohol, the quality of his shows also sank, emptying audience seats. While he thought about returning home, he received no encouraging news from Hungary, and the increasingly tense political situation also forced him to remain in the States. He travelled to Hollywood to seek film roles, but his lack of English left him few possibilities, like the role of Antonio Scotti in the film The Great Caruso (Richard Thorpe, 1951), starring Mario Lanza. The castings were humiliating and the small roles degrading. Jávor joined a touring group, performing Hungarian hit songs and oldies. Later he also worked part-time as a gatekeeper, and computer operator. During his 11 years in the US, Jávor met numerous difficulties, but he later also remembered joyful moments: he wrote numerous articles in American-Hungarian papers, and with his journalist ID he could visit cinemas for free. Through a voluntary detoxication cure, he gave up his alcohol-addiction, and befriended several emigrant artists living in America, including Sándor Márai. In 1956, touring Israel with an occasional group, he learnt that he could finally go home. In 1957, he returned to Budapest, awaited by friends, and jobs in the Jókai and Petőfi theatres. However, the years of hardships laid still fresh on Jávor, and several critics found his acting lacking. But his still living legend carried him on, making several successful appearances, and he also was offered a film deal. But his health could not tolerate the highly intensive life, and after a seizure in 1958, he was transported to a hospital which he never left. While spending over one year in bed, the National Theatre re-hired him, and he was often visited by old friends, also resolving some grudges of the past. But his state worsened, and Pál Jávor died in 1959. He was 57. His burial was a theatrical ceremony, his coffin followed by tens of thousands of fans to the Farkasréti Cemetery.

Police and protesters face off again

Is it legal to take photos of people without asking?
In public places where there is no right to privacy, yes you can. The same applies in private places where you have the permission of the landowner or the landowner has stated no restrictions on photography. However photographing someone without asking their permission can cause a lot of trouble if not handled sensitively. If someone does not want to be photographed it is best to respect their wishes unless there is an overriding reason not to. Most people in most circumstances respond well to friendly explanation, especially if you show them the photo. Nevertheless some will object that you have violated their rights in some interesting way, and it's best to have the explanations ready.
'You can't take my photo without permission'. Oh yes you can, usually. Point to the CCTV cameras and wave, they never asked either. Of course it is perfectly understandable that individuals may feel singled out and perhaps intimidated, frightened or angry not to be in control, but it's not a legal point.
'You have violated my copyright'. This is in no sense true. There is no copyright in the human face or form, and copying would anyway mean cloning them, not creating an image. An image of a person is copyright of the photographer.
'You have violated my privacy'. Legally this is unlikely to be true. There is no right to privacy in public places as a rule. There is a right to privacy in private places and in public places where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy (eg public toilets), but how extensive this is depends on circumstances.
In private places that are open to the public, permission of the landowner is usually sufficient to be able to photograph visitors and staff. However a recent court case upheld a right to eat a meal in a restaurant in privacy even though the restaurant owner had consented to the photography, because in the court's view it was a customer's normal expectation not to be photographed there. If in doubt, this is probably the question to ask yourself.
'You have violated my human rights'. Police seem to sometimes object to being photographed on the grounds that their 'Human Rights' are being violated. This really means the same thing as 'privacy' and there is none in the street as the presence of CCTV and police photographers shows.
The Human Rights Act 1998 recognises a human right to expect privacy wherever privacy is normal, eg in the home. So photographs taken where privacy may be expected require permission of the subject. EG photographs taken from public places that depict someone within their home in a situation where they expect privacy, for instance through a window using a telephoto lens, will be actionable.
'You are harassing me'. Photography can indeed constitute harassment, but for an act to constitute harassment requires deliberate acts of harassment on at least 2 separate occasions. The complainant may then seek a restraining order from the court.
Harassment is potentially an issue for paparazzi in their pursuit of celebrities, but equally a restraining order has been used to suppress inconvenient photography by npower at Radley lakes.
'You need a model release'. Model releases are not necessary for anything except photographs to be used for commercial purposes. For editorial or artistic purposes they have no relevance unless you intend defaming the subject and need them to make a contractual agreement not to sue you for libel. If you intend selling the image for marketing or advertising use that implies endorsement by the subject, then yes, you need a model release (or rather, the advertiser does).
'You have violated data protection law'. Superficially this seems correct as the Data Protection Act does indeed prohibit the recording of data that identifies an individual. A photograph certainly qualifies and the DPA certainly applies to CCTV monitoring, ID photos etc. However the DPA Part 1 Section 3 specifically exempts as a 'special purpose' photographs or other data recorded for journalism, or for artistic or literary purposes.

Swastikas were ancient symbols. However, the symbol has acquired a bad reputation due to ignorant people who do not know that the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSGWP or Nazis) did not call their symbol a "swastika." NSGWP members called their symbol a hakenkreuz (hooked cross) and they used it to represent crossed S-letters for their socialism under their National Socialist German Workers Party. See the work of the noted symbologist Dr. Rex Curry (author of "Swastika Secrets"). American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy, Francis Bellamy and the Theosophical Society) influenced German socialists in the use of the swastika to represent socialism. The ignorance about the "swastika" (hakenkreuz) was predicted long ago when Professor Max Muller discouraged Dr. Heinrich Schliemann in the careless use of the term "swastika" and referred to such ignorant people as "the vulgus profanum." The same people are ignorant of the fact that German national socialists did NOT refer to themselves as "nazis." NSGWP members referred to themselves as "socialists" (hence their use of the of the hakenkreuz to represent crossed S-letters for their "socialism"). Such people continue to defame the "swastika" symbol by their ignorance of the hakenkreuz and other symbols, rituals, meaning and terminology under German national socialists. For example, there is widespread ignorance of the fact that the German socialist's stiff-armed salute (and robotic chanting in unison) came from American socialists (Francis Bellamy, cousin of Edward Bellamy), and that the stiff-armed salute had been used in the USA's Pledge of Allegiance for about 3 decades before German socialists borrowed it. German socialists defamed the American salute as they defamed the "swastika," yet only because of ignorant people who still do not know the history. The stiff-armed salute developed because the early Pledge of Allegiance began with a military salute that was then extended outward to point at the flag (it was not an "ancient Roman salute" -another debunked myth repeated by the ignorant vulgus profanum). The above are part of the discoveries by Dr Curry (author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets").

A Thursday, July 9th, view of the sand dunes at the beach frontage of the Foxton Beach carpark under which today is buried the concrete sea wall that was constructed along the beach front of the carpark to stop sea erosion of the carpark frontage, and which was officially opened in November 2009.
This must now be a pleasing sight to Foxton Beach couple, George and Christina Paton, who campaigned against the construction of the seawall, prefering instead grass covered sand dunes along the carpark beach front.
It could be said however that with the construction of the sea wall it did help considerably in the formation of the sand dunes under which it is now buried.
An example of the some of the Press stories surrounding the Foxton Beach seawall controversy at the time:
FOXTON BOARD CHAIR UNREPENTANT OVER PHOTO BURNING
30 November 2009
The chairman of the Foxton Community Board says he will not apologise to a couple whose image he publicly burned 'until hell freezes over'.
Basil Vertongen set fire to a photo of Christina and George Paton at the official opening of a beach seawall in the Horowhenua town earlier in November.
The Patons and 16 others had opposed the wall, which was completed more than a decade after it was first proposed.
Mr Vertongen says 6,000 people signed a petition supporting the completion of the wall and the opposition caused the project's cost to rise from $150,000 to $350,000.
The Patons are seeking legal advice over the matter.
The couple maintain they followed normal processes to lodge their opposition at no cost to other community members. They say Mr Vertongen's actions are 'sick'. - Radio New Zealand
FORMER FOXTON BOARD CHAIR APOLOGIES TO SEAWALL OPPONENTS
Friday, 9 May 2014
Former Chair of the Foxton Community Board, Basil Vertongen, has apologised to Christina and George Paton in a settlement of their defamation case against him.
At the official opening of the Foxton Beach seawall in 2009, Mr Vertongen burned a newspaper photograph of the Patons and accused them and other seawall objectors of causing delays and $200,000 in increased costs to ratepayers. He later repeated these claims in the media.
The Patons were very distressed to learn of these actions, which they believed were deeply misleading and unfair as well as an attack on the democratic rights of people to participate in decision-making. They called on Mr Vertongen to retract and apologise for this actions, but he initially refused.
In their defamation claim, the Patons argued that they were not responsible for any increased costs or delays. They noted that the Department of Conservation had also opposed the seawall consent applications. The district and regional councils refused consent because the application provided too little evidence of how adverse effects on the environment would be dealt with. Following court-assisted mediation, all the parties agreed that the seawall could go ahead, but only with conditions attached. Mr Vertongen accepted all of this, but denied that he had defamed the Patons.
Mr Vertongen has now provided an apology to the Patons and the defamation claim has been settled.
Under the settlement, the wording of the apology and the other terms are confidential. - Scoop Media
BEACH SEAWALL DEFAMATION FINALLY SETTLED
13/5/2014
Former Foxton Community Board chairman Basil Vertongen once said "hell would freeze over" before he apologised for burning a photo of a couple who objected to a seawall project.
But it appears he has now been forced to do just that.
At the official opening of the Foxton Beach seawall in 2009, Vertongen burned a newspaper photograph of Christina and George Paton and accused them and other seawall objectors of causing delays and $200,000 in increased costs to ratepayers. He later repeated these claims in the media.
The Patons sued Vertongen for defamation and nearly five years after the original act, the couple has announced that the case has been settled.
In a press release, they said Vertongen had provided an apology, but the wording and other terms of the settlement were confidential.
When spoken to by the Manawatu Standard, Vertongen would not say if he had apologised. He instead offered no comment on the grounds that he was not allowed to say anything about the case.
The Patons said they were upset and humiliated by Vertongen's action which they believed were deeply misleading and unfair as well as an attack on the democratic rights of people to participate in decision-making.
In their defamation claim, the Patons argued that they were not responsible for any increased costs or delays.
They noted that the Department of Conservation had also opposed the seawall consent applications.
The Horowhenua District Council and Horizons Regional Council refused consent because the application provided too little evidence of how adverse effects on the environment would be dealt with.
Following court-assisted mediation, all the parties agreed that the seawall could go ahead, but only with conditions attached. Vertongen accepted all of this, but denied he had defamed the Patons.
Vertongen remains a member of the Foxton Community Board. - Manawatu Standard

Thai protesters say royal insult law must go
10th December 2020 - Reuters
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai protesters called on Thursday for the abolition of the lese majeste law which bans criticism of the monarchy and has been used recently against the leaders of months of protests demanding royal reforms and the removal of the government.
Section 112 of the Thai criminal code sets jail terms of three to 15 years for anyone convicted of defaming, insulting or threatening King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his closest family.
“If our country were truly democratic, we would be able to talk about monarchy reforms or criticise the institution,” Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul, one of the protest leaders, said at a public event focused on the lese majeste law.
“Many wouldn’t have to seek asylum, be jailed, flee for their lives, or die just because they talked about the monarchy...No one should have to face this just by talking about other human beings who fancy themselves as gods.”
The Palace did not comment and has not done so since the start of the protests. The government did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Panusaya said she and 24 others had now been summoned to acknowledge lese majeste charges over comments made at protests since July.
Over 1,000 protesters against the lese majeste law gathered on Thursday at a venue commemorating a Thai student-led uprising in 1973 that helped end a military government at the time.
Before the recent charges, the law had not been used since 2018. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha had said this was at the request of the king. Protesters also seek the removal of Prayuth, a former junta leader.
A hashtag that translates as #Abolish112 was trending on Thai-langauge Twitter on Thursday.
The protests have become the biggest challenge to the monarchy in decades, breaking taboos with open criticiscm of an institution that the constitution says must be revered.
Protesters want the king to be made clearly accountable under the constitution. They also seek to reverse changes that gave him control of the royal fortune and some army units.

A vigil to mourn for the victims, pray for the injured, and express our outrage at the shooting at the GLBT Center in Tel Aviv. At least 10 others were also wounded, mostly teenagers.

Australia holds grudges against the Howard Government and corrupt police. Doctor Mohamed Haneef says he will seek compensation for false imprisonment, [assault] and defamation after he was arrested on [scapegoat-propaganda] charges. An independent inquiry by retired NSW judge John Clarke QC has found no evidence to link Dr Haneef to the attempted terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow which led to his arrest in July 2007. In his report, Justice Clarke said he was "mystified" by former immigration minister Kevin Andrews' decision to cancel the Indian-born doctor's visa after he was granted bail. The case against Dr Haneef later collapsed and the charges were dropped. The inquiry found that Mr Andrews did not reflect deeply enough on his department's advice, but his decision was not politically motivated and he did not act improperly. [Why didn't Andrews act improperly by going about denying his own departments advice? Therefore, self-explanatory that his decision was politically motivated, more likely than not, for his then boss John Howard and therefore he did act improperly. So the general public ought not be satisfied as they are told more lies and white washed about an ex-minister and totally corrupt Howard government propaganda.]
