Overall, the DRC’s extensive forest resources are in good condition, but they are being lost and degraded at an increasing rate, particularly in critical areas such as gallery forests in the west and hilly landscapes in the east.

 

UNEP has identified the key drivers of forest degradation and deforestation. They include slash and burn agriculture with reduced fallow periods, fuelwood and charcoal collection, unregulated artisanal and small-scale logging -which is estimated to represent 75 percent of total timber exports from the DR, and finally, road infrastructure opening previously pristine areas up to human activities.

Globalement, les vastes ressources forestières de la RDC sont en bon état, mais elles s’amenuisent et se dégradent de plus en plus vite, en particulier dans les zones critiques telles que les forêts-galeries dans l’ouest et dans les collines à l’est.

 

Le PNUE a identifié les principaux facteurs de la dégradation des forêts et de la déforestation. Ils incluent notamment l’agriculture itinérante sur brûlis avec des périodes réduites de jachère, la collecte de bois de chauffage et de charbon de bois, la coupe de bois artisanale illégale et à petite échelle, qui représente environ 75% des exportations totales de bois de la RDC, et enfin les infrastructures routières qui ont ouvert des zones auparavant dépourvues d’activités humaines.

Kananga, Kasaï Occidental, RDC : Pour atténuer le besoin de la population en eau potable au Quartier Bianki à Kananga, la MONUSCO y a financé l’aménagement de dix sources d’eau potable dans le cadre des projets à impact rapide. D’un montant de 35 603.6 dollars américains, ce projet va aider 55 825 femmes et environ 77 400 filles à fournir de l’eau potable à leurs familles, mais surtout éliminer les maladies d’origines hydriques causées selon Mme Berthine Bitota de l’ONG ADESI par «des conditions d’hygiène précaires issues de déchets biologiques en cette période post conflit dans le Kasaï”. Kananga, Western Kasai, DRC: To alleviate the need for drinking water in the Bianki District of Kananga, MONUSCO has funded the construction of 10 drinking water sources under the Quick-impact projects. This 35,603.6 US dollars-QIP will help 55,825 women and about 77,400 girls to provide drinking water to their families, but above all to eliminate waterborne diseases caused by "precarious hygiene conditions from biological waste in the post-conflict period in Kasai", according to Mrs. Berthine Bitota of the NGO ADESI. DRC: The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres payed a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 31 August to 2 September 2019.In Goma he held meetings with the MONUSCO leadership, Staff Union and Humanitarian actors. He also visited the DDRRR repatriation camp in Munigi where he met some ex combatants and their families. In Beni he laid a wreath for fallen Peacekeepers and visited the Mangina Ebola Operations center where he met Ebola survivors and discharged patients. The SG ended his visit in Kinshasa where he held discussions with the President of the Republic, prime minister, National Assembly as well as opposition and governing parties and the civil society. RDC, Kananga, en prélude a la célébration de la journée des droits de l’homme le BCNUDH, l’unité pénitentiaire de la MONUSCO et leurs partenaires ont organisé un match de football et une campagne médicale au sein de la prison centrale de Kananga en faveur des détenus. A cette occasion une trentaine de détenus ont été consultés et reçu des médicamenta de 1ère nécessitée. DRC, Kananga, as a prelude to the celebration of Human Rights Day, the UNJHRO, the MONUSCO’s prison unit and their partners organized a football match and a medical campaign in the Central Prison of Kananga in favor of the detainees. On this occasion, about thirty detainees were consulted and received medication of 1st necessity. Mavivi, Beni, DRC: 16 September, 202021.Civil Affairs section of Beni Field Office organizes training in integrated approach to the Protection of civilians for officers, men and women of newly arrived Kenyan component of the recently formed MONUSCO quick reaction Force (QRF). Beni, Nord-Kivu, RDC – Dans le cadre de son appui à la stabilisation de l’Est de la RDC, ce mercredi 22 septembre 2021, la MONUSCO a remis aux autorités congolaises le nouveau bâtiment de la mairie de Beni. L’ancien bâtiment avait été incendié lors des manifestations contre l’insécurité de novembre 2019. « C’est un outil supplémentaire pour la stabilisation du territoire et de la province du Nord-Kivu», a déclaré le général Constant Ndima, gouverneur du Nord-Kivu qui a réceptionné cet ouvrage. Beni, North Kivu, DRC - As part of its support for stabilization in eastern DRC, today, Wednesday, September 22, 2021, MONUSCO has handed over to the Congolese authorities the new Beni town hall building. The old building was set on fire during the protests against insecurity in November 2019. “It is an additional tool for the stabilization of the territory and the North Kivu province," said General Constant Ndima, the Governor of North - Kivu who received the building. Kalemie, Tanganyika, Province Congo; 21 December 2018: Mr. David Gressly, Deputy Special Representative for Operations and the Rule of Law of MONUSCO (DRSSG) paid a working visit to Tanganyika Province from 19 to 21 December 2018. Security issues the protection of civilians and the electoral process were at the center of the discussions he had both in Kalemie and Bendera. Bukavu, Sud-Kivu, RDC – Afin de lutter contre l’insécurité aux abords de la Place de l’Indépendance à Bukavu, suite au manque d’éclairage, la MONUSCO finance un projet d’éclairage solaire de ce grand carrefour fréquenté par plus de 100 000 passants chaque jour. Bukavu, Sud-Kivu, DRC – To fight insecurity in the vicinity of the ‘’ Place de l'Indépendance’’ in Bukavu, as a result of lack of public lighting, MONUSCO is financing a solar lighting project for this large crossroads used by more than 100,000 people every day. Beni, North Kivu Province Congo: The Undersecretary General (DPKO)Mr. Lacroix and the Director General (WHO)Mr. Tedros Adhanom of the United Nations were in Beni as part of their visit to the DRC. At the end of the visit they spoke to the media and reiterated the continuous support for the fight against the Ebola spread in the DRC.
