The investigation of biocultural diversity and identity that Vanmechelen has been conducting since 1999 combines art, science and aesthetics. In his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, the artist has crossed species of chickens from many different countries. The aim: breeding cosmopolitan poultry with genetic material from every one of the world’s chicken species.

While we (humans) refer to potential life in outer space as “aliens,” queer and transgender life on Earth is likewise still often referred to as “alien.” tranxxeno lab by Adriana Knouf addresses the biochemical requirements of transgender persons in outer space, especially their need for hormone replacement medication. TX-1 launched bits of these medications to the International Space Station (ISS), marking the first-known time that elements of the transgender experience orbited the Earth. TX-1 includes a fragment of Knouf’s spironolactone pill, a slice of her estradiol patch, and a miniature paper sculpture, as a gesture towards the absent-yet-present xenoentities of the cosmos. A symbolic exodus, the return of TX-1 to Earth was also a sign of resilience. The project draws attention to the fact that all human bodies are subject to individual, societal, and environmental changes, and that all people need support and care for their survival—whether on Earth or in space.
"TX-1" won the Award of Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

The work series K-9_topology, winner of a Golden Nica in 2017, consists of the four consecutive projects shown here, which each focus from different perspectives on the essence and the role of human beings and especially the role of a woman in increasingly tough bio political conditions of the present times.

February is one of the most important months of the year after December and summer. Some of the reasons are:
1) It’s the first month after everyone pretends they aren’t drinking.
2) Pancake day.
3) It’s my mom’s birthday, my grandma’s birthday and my four friend’s birthdays.
4) It’s Valentine’s Day.
A lot of these things are optional. You take it or leave it. Maybe you drink, always. Or never. If you’re not from one of the interesting countries, you don’t know about Pancake Day. And if you aren’t me, you don’t have to celebrate six special birthdays.
But everyone knows it’s Valentines Day, and if you’re anywhere in the world except Austria before 2005, someone is reminding you to celebrate the day of being in love.
To make it a more special day, I worked on this nice card for you to give to your favourite person. It’s a drawing of Krang, a very famous character on TV. He is a little kranky sometimes because he wants to be the most important person in the world, but the guys that are supposed to help him always mess everything up.
If you have someone you love that gives you that special feeling in the stomach, like you swallowed your brain, give them this card and show them that when they accept you as you are, you feel like you rule the world with love.

Compasses is a collection of poems written with a machine learning model of spelling and phonetics. The model invents new words in negative spaces between supposedly discrete categories.
Allison Parrish trained a machine learning model with two parts: a “speller,” which spells words based on how they sound, and a “sounder-out,” which sounds out words based on how they're spelled. In the process of sounding out a word, the “sounder-out” produces a fixed-length numerical vector, known as a “hidden state,” which is essentially a condensed representation of a word's phonetics. The “speller” can then use the phonetic information contained in this hidden state to produce a plausible spelling of the word. The hidden state, like any other numerical vector, can be modified: translated, multiplied, blurred, averaged.

The “Digital Shaman Project” proposes a new mode of mourning in keeping with the technical advances of today. A 3D-printed mask of the deceased’s face is placed on a domestic robot installed with a motion program that mimics the physical characteristics―personality, speech, gestures―of that individual as if possessed by their spirit. The program functions for 49 days* after the person’s death (the traditional Buddhist period of mourning in Japan), during which time family members can experience simulated conversation with the deceased as if he or she were still alive. On the 49th day, the robot bids farewell to the bereaved and the program shuts down. The program is thus designed to allow the bereaved to spend 49 days with a robot seemingly possessed, like a medium, by the deceased. The creator says that she developed the concept after her grandmother’s death, when she personally experienced the function that a funeral serves as a mourning ritual for those left behind.

The installation consists of five hydraulic presses, capable of crushing practically any object (a mobile phone, a pair of glasses, headphones or whatever). In the process of destruction, a special microphone records the sounds made as the object undergoes deformation, and a computer algorithm transforms them into a 20-minute album.

In the 60s one of the biggest residential complexes in Leuven (Belgium), Sint Maartensdal, had the goal of creating a modern social commune made of identical apartments. In spite of the architect Renaat Braem’s idealistic intentions, the Sint-Maartensdal site has a fundamental inequality: only half of the occupants enjoy direct sunlight. The people living in block 1 are affected the most.
There is the Sun aims at providing a solution to this problem. Building upon the site’s renovation a few years ago, There is the Sun aspired to bring about a “symbolic restoration”: visualizing and resuscitating the utopian dream and the social-artistic ideas upon which this project was founded.

The way dogs are dealt with in Mexico is extremely contradictory: on the one hand there are official security regulations that consider the dog a dangerous animal and a health hazard; on the other hand the Federal Civil Code refers to the dog as a “good”, as an object or thing. Starting from this legal paradox, the artist began collecting canine corpses that had been run over and left behind, and then she started making various products from their remains. The dogs were skinned and their fur tanned to make textiles. Soap was made from the body fat extracted in a chemical lab.

The "Habaq Movement" is an agricultural cooperative in Lebanon, whose members belong to different states, ethnic groups and religions, and whose aim is to reclaim fallow agricultural land, set up work teams and grow food again. It also develops alternative solutions for local communities, provides training and links agricultural initiatives of local people and refugees in Lebanon.

Somatic Echo is a sound installation that turns the human body into an acoustic medium. With transducer loudspeakers and sensors fixed to the head, an eight-channel composition is transmitted directly into the body.

This project is part of the Ars Electronica CyberArts Exhibition. Algorithms have become essential elements of our daily lives, used in almost all areas of society: in online searches and navigation, in ratings systems and smart devices or bots, but also in banking, speech and facial recognition, health care, policing, and so on. However, the systems that are developed are never neutral, which means that algorithms may be biased and discriminatory. The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) is an organization that combines art and research to increase public awareness of the social implications and dangers of Artificial Intelligence. It does so through artistic means, for example texts, TED talks, or films – or, for example, through founder Joy Buolamwini’s talk “AI, Ain’t I a Woman?” in the format of a poem.

"Families For Freedom" is a women-led movement of families that demands that all arbitrarily detained and forcibly displaced Syrians are freed. "Families For Freedom" was received an Award of Distinction at the 2022 Prix Ars Electronica in the category Digital Communities.

In Vastum, the artists' duo L.A. Raeven portray the fear of ageing and degeneration that pervades our society. The work shows a woman, actually still a girl of 11 years old, with progeria—a disorder that causes premature ageing. As far as we know, there are only 45 people worldwide who suffer from this hereditary disorder. With the help of Mao Lin Liao from Replica, we gave this girl the movements of a laboratory rat. The viewer watches the girl through a tiny hole of a giant box and can hear and feel her banging against the walls of the box in which she is captured. (There is a sound and banging machine in the box). The viewer thinks he sees a real girl, but the girl doesn't exist in reality and is only a virtual human being. It is a scary image that is intended to scare the viewer. Vastum means ‘waste’ in Latin, and that is what this virtual human being is, waste from genetic experiments as described in the book from Yuval Noah Harari 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. It is supposed to be a spectre of the future, where poor people are exploited for genetic research and the rich people have all the benefits. But what should be done with the underclass individuals who don't fit into this society anymore? We fear a future upper class of ‘perfect’ people who can buy intelligence and knowledge to stay young while the poor have to die young.
Vastum by L.A.Raeven (Liesbeth and Angelique Raeven) (NL) received an award on Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.
