Scarlet Elf Cup / sarcoscypha austriaca. Cloud Wood, Leicestershire. 14/03/20.
In these fraught and worrying days, any pops of colour in our lives must be welcomed and appreciated. Scarlet Elf Cups certainly provided me with a huge smile when I visited a Leicestershire nature reserve a short while ago. It's been ages since I last found any.
The diminutive, irregular cup-shaped fungi go by a variety of names ... Scarlet Elf Caps, Red Cups, Scarlet Cups, Moss Cups and my favourite, Fairies Baths!
You'll notice that I wasn't the first to discover this one. The variety of holes in the cup are signs that slugs and small rodents had beat me to it ... definitely not a suitable bath for any woodland fairies!
BEST VIEWED LARGE.

I took this picture a few weeks before we moved out of Hood River last year. I’m still sad that we have to move, but my commute is much shorter, and I am pumping a lot less CO2 into the atmosphere. This was taken inside a coffeehouse called #Ground (formerly Holstein's) in Hood River.
