No queremos palabras, queremos hechos.

What a peaceful place the Falls Forest Retreat is.
Falls Forest Retreat is an idyllic property tucked in under the southern side of Middle Brother Mountain at Johns River on the NSW Mid North Coast just to the north of Taree. The property is surrounded by tall Eucalyptus grandis forest and untouched stands of subtropical rainforest, and has a pristine creek system. 74ha of the total 81ha are under a voluntary conservation agreement (VCA) with National Parks to preserve this wonderful sanctuary of biodiversity.
Other parts of the property are covered by Land for Wildlife and Humane Society International Wildlife Land Trust affiliation.
The main homestead is a 100 plus year-old federation home and there are 6 eco villas to compliment the octagonal conference centre which is fully equipped with an office, commercial kitchen, games room and toilets.
Falls Forest Retreat is both a conference centre and also provides overnight and weekly accommodation and is only 15 minutes off the Pacific Highway.
The Falls Retreat, as it is otherwise known, is owned by Mary E White, noted Paleobotanical author who, commencing in her later years, has written a series of very important books focusing on the perilous state of our planet.
I have visited Falls Forest Retreat several times over the last few years and am always in admiration for Mary White who apart from her inspirational books, has worked tirelessly to tie up all the land around this little piece of paradise in various conservation agreements, sometimes at not inconsiderable personal expense.
Mary believes the property may well be the southern most limit for several rainforest species including Elaeocarpus grandis and Cuttsia viburnea to mention a couple.
Mary E White is now in her mid 80's and I have heard a rumour that this magnificent property may be coming onto the market.
Update - Owing to Mary E White's failing health and age she was, agonizingly, forced to sell the property on 23 Dec 2014 to new owners but as far as I can tell still offers accommodation.
"On 5 August 2018, Mary E White was found dead in her room at the Warrigal aged care complex, apparently as a result of drugs administered without authorization by her daughter, Barbara Eckersley. Eckersley was charged with her mother's murder; at her bail hearing, her barrister maintained that his client had the "belief that the aged-care centre weren't able to deal with Dr White's agitation and pain".[6][7][8] After more than two years' delay, Eckersley was eventually found guilty, not of murder but of the lesser charge of manslaughter and was spared jail time, instead being sentenced to a two year community corrections order on account of what the judge termed her "low moral culpability" due to a "diagnosis of severe depression".

Angelica is a dear friend of mine. Angelica Ojeda is special among the extraordinary “Pioneras” I’ve known. She’s the kind of person you want on your side because she’s a brave truth teller. Her courage seems to spring from a deep spiritual nature that is highly intuitive and healing. She’s one of those strong women in our communities who are sought out for advise, blessings and mother loving because of their strong convictions and grounding. There’s a crusty, take no nonsense tough love way about her that belies incredibly tender generosity.
Angelica’s an entertaining story teller brimming with intelligence, mother wit and a bodacious sense of humor. Angelica’s immigrant story is one that is familiar to many first and second generation Puerto Ricans in the US. Angelica has had a long life of struggle and successes as a businesswoman, wife and parent. She’s the mother of one of my best friends, Diana.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
These are part of an ongoing series of documentary images that memorialize the faces and lives of Latino elders in various community settings.
It's also a meditative reflection of my own aging process and awareness of normal and abnormal declines in memory. The nature of identity and the daily miracle of waking up in the morning re-remembering who I am.......
Memory is the basic stuff that anchors us to our being in time and space...... It's the link to where we've been. Unique to all other living things, it is the vessel for our existential awareness of what we're all moving toward.......our mortality. Our spiritual journey, our humanity.
With any luck and longevity, impending mortality can become an advisor that sits on our shoulder nudging us towards the better part of wisdom....or sometimes simply stirring us awake to the moment.
In “Tuesdays with Morrie” ( www.randomhouse.com/features/morrie/ ) there's a cute story about this.
A little wave bobbing along in the great ocean....having a grand old time.....notices that the waves in front were crashing against the shore. 'My God, this is terrible', the wave says. Look what's going to happen to me! Another wave comes along and says: 'Why do you look so sad? The first wave says: 'you don't understand, we're all going to crash!.....All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn't this terrible?' The second wave says: 'No, you don't understand....... You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean.'.......
This project is about the experience of feeling like a tiny evanescent “wave” in the ocean of humanity. It is a celebration of life in the face of the inevitable losses encountered in our human journey. More to the point, it is a tribute to my Puerto Rican family and the memory of my parents, Genara Santiago Otaño and Juan Martinez Rodriguez
Beyond this, my friend Don Alfonso Rodriguez has been my muse and pivotal wake-up call to do this project. I thank and acknowledge him and all our elder friends and neighbors from the greater Latin American community and beyond. Most importantly, this work acknowledges the children, spouses, professional caretakers and service agencies (i.e., The Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center, NORC program) that make it possible for our elders to continue living in their own homes. To say the very least, our elders deserve to live and die with dignity.
The saddest part of all of this is the dearth of resources available to make this happen. The poverty rate in 2002 among US Hispanic elderly (65 and older) was 21.4 percent. Compared to other elderly in the US population), they are twice as likely to be living within the poverty levels. ( USDHHS www.aoa.gov/prof/Statistics/minority_aging/Facts-on-Hispa... )
Even sadder still, it's actually worse than reported when one thinks about it. This is because the operational definitions of poverty statistics are politically driven and often under-report actual poverty levels on the ground. Whatever the methodological or other reasons may be, they serve to lessen the culpability and shame of the established political and social order for this growing crisis. No surprise there, .....another “white elephant” hidden in plain sight, eh?
In so many ways, known and unknown, our elders are extraordinary, unsung heros, leaders, workers among workers, dreamers, mentors, nurturers....”Pioneros.... Yes, our collective cultural memory. I am living out many of their dreams. I am co-creating new ones into the future......right now.
All those who've been reading my comments and text, you will notice that the overall narrative is developing in response to your: “favoriting”, “views”, comments, conversations and interactions with me about this project. You are all an interctive parts of this creation.......thank you!!!
This long-term documentary project continues grow for yet another year..... Any ideas for project funding proposals.......promoting an exhibition, book or ";show-and-tell"..???... Let me know :~)
"We were not involved in that awful practice, but the government officials of that day were involved in slavery. For us to express our disapproval of what they did as representatives of the state is very appropriate,"
~ Alabama Senate Rules Committee Chairman Lowell Barron
Should States Apologize for Slavery?
Time Magazine, Mar. 27, 2007
On Monday Maryland became only the second state after Virginia to officially seek atonement for slavery. The state's House of Delegates approved a measure, already passed by the senate and not requiring the governor's signature, expressing "profound regret for the role that Maryland played in instituting and maintaining slavery and for the discrimination that was slavery's legacy."
While the apology for slavery has been grabbing all the headlines, it's the regret for the legacy of slavery that really matters.
Many non-blacks assert that they shouldn't apologize for something they didn't do. There is logic to that thinking: if you didn't own slaves or enable others to own slaves, you aren't culpable. But the U.S. didn't do a very good job of converting its former slaves to full-fledged citizens. Slavery gave way to Jim Crow, lynchings, poll taxes, redlining and educational and job discrimination. Although illegal now, these tools perpetuated a racial hierarchy that affects every American today, no matter how subtly. Just compare any rates of achievement, poverty, imprisonment by race; blacks are nowhere closing to catching up.
No wonder black people were so appalled when Frank Hargrove, a Virginia legislator who is white, said last month "black citizens should get over" slavery. That notion invalidates the black reality. It essentially says: The discrimination you feel and I benefit from is an illusion — or at least has no historical context.
Ultimately, Hargrove voted for Virginia's apology measure, which was passed in February and acknowledges that abolition was followed by "insidious institutions and practices toward Americans of African descent that were rooted in racism, racial bias and racial misunderstanding." Put more simply, the Maryland resolution seems to imply that discrimination against blacks hurts everyone: "Slavery's legacy has afflicted the citizens of our state down to the present."
These aren't easy things to talk about. It's one thing to say that slavery, so long ago, was wrong; quite another to discuss our complicity in its lingering effects. That's why Delegate Michael L. Vaughn, who sponsored the Maryland House measure, says the apology isn't about reparations but opening a dialogue to bridge the racial divide. "Slavery has had a negative effect on relationships between people of color and non-color to this day," Vaughn, who is black, told me. "When we talk about matters of race, people are uncomfortable. I don't think this resolution is the be-all, end-all, but it gets people talking."
Legislators in a handful of states including Missouri and Georgia are considering their own expressions of regret for slavery, and Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, a white Tennessean, just introduced a resolution for a national apology in the U.S. House that reads, in part, "African-Americans continue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow — long after both systems were formally abolished — through enormous damage and loss, both tangible and intangible, including the loss of human dignity and liberty, the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity."
Obviously, not everyone is convinced that the apology is necessary. Maryland Delegate Patrick L. McDonough said he voted against the resolution not only because his ancestors were in Ireland during the time of U.S. slavery, but also because he feels such a stance amounts to meaningless symbolism. "I don't think apologies solve anything," the Baltimore Sun reported McDonough saying. "They're just feel-good superficial measures."
But sometimes feel-good does good. "The first step in healing is to apologize," Vaughn says. "For a young person who is knowledgeable of the effects slavery has had on him and his country — for any of us who have felt discriminated against because of this legacy — you do have a small sense of relief when you hear an apology."
Senate Unanimously Approves Resolution Apologizing for Slavery
Washington Post , June 19, 2009
The Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday apologizing for slavery, making way for a joint congressional resolution and the latest attempt by the federal government to take responsibility for 2 1/2 centuries of slavery.
"You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), lead sponsor of the resolution, said after the unanimous-consent vote. "It is important to have a collective response to a collective injustice."
The Senate's apology follows a similar apology passed last year by the House. One key difference is that the Senate version explicitly deals with the long-simmering issue of whether slavery descendants are entitled to reparations, saying that the resolution cannot be used in support of claims for restitution. The House is expected to revisit the issue next week to conform its resolution to the Senate version.
Harkin, who called the Senate's vote an "important and significant milestone," said he wanted the resolution passed yesterday to closely coincide with Juneteenth, a holiday first celebrated by former slaves to mark their emancipation.
Even among proponents of a congressional apology, reaction to yesterday's vote was mixed. Carol M. Swain, a professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University who had pushed for the Bush administration to issue an apology, called the Democratic-controlled Senate's resolution "meaningless" since the party and federal government are led by a black president and black voters are closely aligned with the Democratic party.
"The Republican Party needed to do it," Swain said. "It would have shed that racist scab on the party."
Republicans, however, were supportive of the resolution. "It doesn't fix everything, but it does go a long way toward acknowledgment and moving us on to the next steps to building a more perfect union, doing the things that Martin Luther King would talk about, like building a colorblind society," said Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.).
As with all congressional apologies -- but especially this one -- concerns about liability for restitution were part of the political calculations, in this case because of the long-running debate about whether the descendants of slaves should be compensated.

For an inclusive sexual education in educational centers to educate in respect, equality and inclusion. Against LGBTIphobia and the rotten morals of the Catholic Church.
On November 25 we will take the streets again for all this. Because it is in the streets where we will overcome this system and build a new society where no one knows exploitation, injustice or misery.

The 25N all and everyone on the streets against sexist violence!
No queremos palabras, queremos hechos.

..................................................Monday, November 25 is International Day against sexist violence and massive demonstrations will be held throughout the world in response to this scourge. As we have done on many occasions - from March 8, through the massive mobilizations against patriarchal justice that protected “La Manada” and, now to “Manada de Manresa” - in the Spanish State we will demand the end of the macho violence that year after year exploits us, oppresses, humiliates and murders.
We are not afraid, we are angry
The overwhelming force demonstrated by the movement for the rights of working women and youth is unstoppable and remains a very powerful example. That is why it is no accident that the Francoist right -PP, Citizens and Vox- attack and try to discredit the struggle that millions of women, along with our partners, are leading.
In the Spanish State, these demonstrations on November 25 will be held after the general elections of the past 10-N, whose results once again put a fundamental issue on the table: that the struggle of the working class and youth in defense of our rights and against those guilty of our oppression is our greatest strength. From Free and Combative we do not minimize or downplay the electoral progress of the extreme right of Vox, but we do want to highlight that the reactionary bloc has failed again in its objective of seizing the Government and that the right has enormous difficulties to continue gaining support : they lose almost 900,000 votes regarding the 28A elections.
The right and the extreme right are a very real threat to all the rights we have won based on mobilization and street fighting. That is why we know that the only way to defeat the offensive they represent is precisely by raising a combative left in the streets, defending a revolutionary and combat feminism, an anti-capitalist ecology, the end of cuts in education and health, the end of precariousness and exploitation, which guarantees a public and dignified pension system ... all the demands we have demanded for years on the streets.
Getting all these claims is no utopia. The next coalition government between the PSOE and United We have been received by broad sectors of youth and the working class as an opportunity for this. That means confronting the great economic powers, the banks, the Catholic Church and the austerity plans of the European Union. We don't want words, we want facts. We already have the experience of the last months of the PSOE government, which despite being considered the "most feminist government in history", continued to respect, among many other things, the Franco and patriarchal justice that frees rapists and blames the victims. We do not throw Rajoy de la Moncloa nor have we defeated right at the polls twice so that everything remains the same. The fight must continue!

The 25N all and everyone on the streets against sexist violence!
Christmas was plunged into a state of jeopardy when, on Sunday, Santa published this year's naughty list.
However Mr Fox, who had suspected that Santa might have gone senile for some time, had no intention of just sitting back an watching the demise of Christmas. He could never allow his polar bear or friends go present-less!
So the fox and the polar bear set to sea yesterday, bound for the Arctic. And today they paid Mr Claus bit of a visit!
Generally Mr Fox doesn't approve of violence. But when it comes to elves...
Suffice it to say, thanks to the rolling pin of Robin Polar Bear, before long the route to Santa's Grotto was strewn with the unconscious carcasses of splatted pointy shoed chaps of diminutive stature!
Eventually they arrived at Senile Santa's Grotto.
For reasons of criminal culpability it's best not to exactly document what happened next, but approximately one minute after Mrs PB's battle-cry a rather portly fellow was seen fleeing from the scene.
A couple of minutes later, Robin Polar Bear was stood outside prodding some of the previously dispatched elves, and Bat Fox was seen exiting the building.
As they began their way home, in the doorway stood waving, a smiley red man with a white beard and bushy tail...
Everything's going to be OK!

QUOTE….“ We were drunk with happiness in those early years. Everybody was, especially the young people. These were the first years of the Rediscovery of Man, when the Instrumentality dug deep in the treasury, reconstructing the old cultures, the old languages, and even the old troubles. The nightmare of perfection had taken our forefathers to the edge of suicide. Now under the leadership of the Lord Jestocost and the Lady Alice More, the ancient civilizations were rising like great land masses out of the sea of the past”….from Alpha Ralpha Boulevard by Cordwainer Smith

My Aunt Nona & Uncle Luis.....I hadn't seen them in over 25 years. They are the cutest couple you'll ever want to meet. Nona is my mother's look-alike sister. When I see her I see mom.

"Magic in Ithkar 1"
This anthology of shared fantasy world stories consist of 13 tales. Three noteworthy authors are represented in this, the first of four "Magic in Ithkar" collections; authors C.J. Cherryh and Andre Norton contribute a novelette and Lin Carter a short story. The remaining authors were unknown to this reader. The Norton story is the best of the group. To this reader it reads like a chapter out of a novel that was never completed. Now this is just speculation on my parts but I could imagine an author's agent saying something to the effect: "You know there are some great ideas in your story, here is an idea, we hire an editor, have him create a prologue about the fair, Ithkar, the Three Lordly Ones and then advertise in the trade for contributions of stories 10 to 20 pages in length". Just speculation, but writing and publishing is a business after all. Nonetheless I found this an entertaining book to read. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the stories and how closely each author adhered to the world-view set down by the editor in the prologue. If you are interested in this book see my series summary listed below:
PUBLISHING FACTS:
The "Magic in Ithkar" book series consist of 4 titles: "Magic in Ithkar"; "Magic in Ithkar 2"; "Magic in Ithkar 3" and "Magic in Ithkar 4". The first, second and third books in the series were published as a trade paperback; subsequently they were published as a mass-market paperback. Books 4 was only published as a mass-market paperback edition. The books were published during the years 1985-7. The first three volumes had two editions and the last one edition. The last printing of any edition was 1987. Andre Norton and Robert Adams are listed as editors of all 4 books.

All four volumes are anthologies of shared fantasy world stories. That is they all take place with a common background, which is detailed in a prologue. In fact each book starts with an identical 9 pages prologue by Robert Adams. We are informed that The Three Lordly Ones visited over four centuries age. As a result of this visitation and subsequent pilgrimages, a temple was erected and priesthood to services the worshipers evolved. A yearly fair around the temple provides mercantile opportunities for tradesmen and pilgrims alike. The location is earth-like but not our Earth. Having read all four books I can attest that all the stories, 55 in all, closely adhere to the fantasy world described in the prologue.
Each volume includes a useful map of the Fair and the temple environs. At the end of the book is a short paragraph about the authors.
THE AUTHORS:
The vast majority of the authors are women and the leading role, as you would suspect, and mostly young ladies. The majority of the authors have many additional titles listed on their ISFDB page although I did find eight authors who have no other credits other that their Ithkar story.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
This is an interesting concept: create a fantasy world centered around a country fair combined with a pilgrimage, add in magic elements, religious conflicts, no technology, semi-feudal and agrarian elements. Most of the stories are good, and a few almost outstanding. Considering the dates of initial publication, 1985-7, even the 'name" authors were almost rookies. If this is your cup of tea I would recommend the series for your consideration and reading pleasure.

From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody, and from the loose sleeves of his yellow gown emerge two slender hands, also the color of bone”. NOTATION: Expansion of "The Planet Buyer" and "The Underpeople". This is the first publication of the complete novel as Smith wrote it. The publishers in the 60's felt that it was too long to publish as a single novel, so Smith broke it in two, adding a small amount of material at the end of "The Planet Buyer" and at the beginning of "The Underpeople" so they could stand separately.

The Gas Peedhit Rahat Samiti (who described themselves as ‘a coalition of former workers and gas victims’ was formed in July 1985) and received support from the UK in ‘developing an alternative production/employment strategy for the people who have suffered in the tragedy’.
The idea was to focus on developing an alternative production idea, particularly in terms of structures ie ways of creating a co-operative or series of worker/community controlled initiatives which were responsive to local needs.
This survivor of the gas disaster was picked up, assumed dead, and thrown in to the morgue.
He regained consciousness and awoke to a scene of unimaginable horror, amongst the corpses, to discover that his toes were frost-bitten from the freezing cold.
His damaged toes can be seen in this picture.

Im sorry a lot, but lately I am not very active in flickr. I am taking very few pictures. The guilty is the notebook moleskine. Since I bought it I have transformed into an analogical girl. I have returned to the pencil, to the paper, to the drawing, to the story, to dedicate a time to draw something, leaving the immediacy of the picture, the quick click that captures the moment.
Camino tranquil·lament. Estic a punt d'entrar al bar on normalment menjo l'entrapà.
I abrigueu-vos que farà molt fred.
Francesc Soldevila.

2014 May 2
Today one friend (Pro-Ukraine) missed being shot by less than a meter. Another (Pro-Russia) was beaten by opposing protesters. And another (Pro-Ukraine) was lit on fire by a Molotov cocktail. ...And I *saw* that last one as it happened on a livestream. And what happened at Odessa's Trade Union Building today is an absolute travesty. If you aren't paying attention to what has been happening, is happening, and what is still to come: you should be.
What is going on in Ukraine is sickening, and worsened in that at the start of this year these same people were friends. You don't throw rocks or tear up cobblestones, toss Molotovs or fill the bottles, fire bullets or stand beside them & expect none of that is intended to kill. Those of both sides who contribute to the carnage are as culpable as those who perform it.
Behind every front line of thugs is a mindless mob, and behind every mindless mob -- to some glimmer of hope -- are the good people, ignored, who will pickup the fallen and clean the mess of both sides.
Even at this relatively early stage after the disaster extensive protest graffiti is seen on the perimeter wall of the abandoned factory along Union Carbide Rd.
here, children stand on the disaster memorial statue, by artist Ruth Waterman, which is ion the process of being erected across the road from the factory gates.
Following a cease fire in the Korean War and an exchange of prisoners, 23 captured U.S. soldiers and one British soldier elected to remain in communist-led countries (along with 327 South Koreans.
These five are posing in the courtyard of the Beijing People’s University in 1956. From left to right: Andrew Fortuna of Detroit, Mi.; Clarence Adams of Memphis, Tenn.; Andrew Condon of Bathgate, Scotland; Larane Sullivan of Santa Barbara, Ca. and Jack Dunn of Baltimore, Md.
As the Red Scare of the late 1940s and 1950s continued in the United States, the prisoners who refused repatriation were labeled as “brainwashed” and fear of communists’ ability to shape people’s minds was spread across the country.
However a number were African Americans who did not wish to return to face racial discrimination. Others agreed with their hosts that communism represented a better hope for mankind than the capitalism of the United States.
Most ultimately had difficulty adapting to the culture and language of the host country and eventually returned to the United States.
Prisoner repatriation was one of the greatest stumbling blocks in the long cease-fire negotiations between the forces of the United Nations and those of China and North Korea.
In June 1953, the two sides agreed that no prisoner who did not wish to be repatriated would be forced to do so (this had long been a sticking point in negotiations, with the Chinese and North Koreans wanting all prisoners returned to their home countries).
Prisoners who did not wish to go back to their home countries would be given 90 days in a neutral compound near Panmunjom to reconsider before being allowed to stay in enemy territory. Following the armistice that was signed on 27 July 1953, effectively ending the Korean War (South Korea never signed), the main prisoner exchange was free to proceed.
Two of the refusals, Corporal Claude Batchelor and Corporal Edward Dickenson, changed their minds before the 90-day window expired. Both were court-martialed and sentenced to prison terms, with Batchelor serving 4½ years and Dickenson 3½ years.
This left 22 United Nations soldiers who voluntarily stayed with the Communists after the final exchange of prisoners. The 21 Americans were given dishonorable discharges.
This had the unintended consequence of rendering them immune to court-martial when they finally returned to the United States (which the majority eventually did), because they were no longer active-duty military. However, they were still criminally culpable for any acts of collaboration or offenses against fellow prisoners committed while they were POWs.
About 4 a.m. on February 24, 1954, a train carrying the 21 American defectors rumbled across the Yalu River into China. The Chinese soon shipped some of the men off to study language and politics. Others went to mills, factories, and farms across Eastern China.
