This camouflage is an example of an attempt to avoid being seen by a bird or other predator; the locust borer has done well combining it with mimicry, quite convincingly resembling a yellow jacket

Locust Borer Longhorn Beetle – 2020OCT02 – Charlotte, NC
I went to harvest goldenrod for goldenrod tea, finding in the bountiful blossoms a breathtaking bonus: a beauteous beetle!
Spectacular arrays of brilliant yellow flowers attract throngs of insects intent on collecting and consuming the nutritious large and rather sticky pollen from myriads of small flowers on each plant, a magnet for late summer and early autumn insects, this wasp-striped longhorn beetle among the most eye-catching, especially important to it as a mimic (Batesian mimicry, something harmless imitating something dangerous): looks like a bee or a wasp but cannot sting.
Many insects, like this locust borer, try very hard to imitate bees (called bee mimics) and wasps, and do a surprisingly good job of it!
Hope you enjoy this 25% of 213 captures I took here this day!

This is a Crab Spider (Thomisidae) with cryptic colors that I found on the bed liner of my truck today. I don't know what it was doing in the bed of my truck, and it quickly got away from me when I lowered the tailgate. I guess this spider is a male, though it seems to be missing a palp. I reckon it's either genus Xysticus or Ozyptila or Coriarachne or Bassaniana - one of those groups of similar cryptically colored spiders. I have another recent photo of a similar spider in here, though I think that one has stubbier front legs. Whatever kind this one is, it's an interesting spider and a surprise to find in my truck. The uncanny crab, that's an expert at cryptic camouflage through putting sand particles on it's carapace.
Here's the two as I found them at Anilao pier.
A German Expressionist puppeteer. Yes that's a thing. Don't look at me like that.
The camera had a horrible problem with noise at even moderate iso. I turned that weakness into a strength by using it to make these images of a vintage party look old timey. The noise, aspect ratio and sepia were all in camera. There's been no processing.

The Cryptic Rest Posture !
The Brettus sp. was for quite some time synonymised with Genus Portia.
The Genus Brettus has quite a few similarities with the Portia... " The Cryptic Rest Posture" being one of them ... when at rest the spider pulls the legs close to the body and the palps besides the chelicerae !

This strange looking shrimp was found in the open, not trying too hard to hide. May be Zenopontonia noverca.
