December’s Cryptic Nights showcases sonic ‘curios’: found objects, antiques, junk and curious oddities made into musical instruments, with a technological spin.
From balloons, ball bearings and bicycle bits to sonic software, solenoids and synthetic snow, The Cabinet of Sonic Curiosities promises to engage and beguile the senses.
This is the 3rd sign like this ive seen. I cant quite figure out if this is a puzzle. Clearly a local Artists current theme but does it have a hidden meaning/message
The local hills and woodlands of the Wye Valley around where I live are littered with such huge boulders. This one is taller than a man. Some I've seen are massive, as big as a house. The reason they are found is to do with the complex geology of the area which is made up of limestone, sandstones, brownstones and quartz conglomerate, and the action of weathering on these stones as well as that of the river as it carved its way down into valley bottom below. This I believe is an outcrop of hard quartz conglomerate mixed with sandstone, that has survived the erosion and weathering of other rocks around it.

This camouflage is an example of an attempt to avoid being seen by a bird or other predator; the locust borer has done well combining it with mimicry, quite convincingly resembling a yellow jacket

Locust Borer Longhorn Beetle – 2020OCT02 – Charlotte, NC
I went to harvest goldenrod for goldenrod tea, finding in the bountiful blossoms a breathtaking bonus: a beauteous beetle!
Spectacular arrays of brilliant yellow flowers attract throngs of insects intent on collecting and consuming the nutritious large and rather sticky pollen from myriads of small flowers on each plant, a magnet for late summer and early autumn insects, this wasp-striped longhorn beetle among the most eye-catching, especially important to it as a mimic (Batesian mimicry, something harmless imitating something dangerous): looks like a bee or a wasp but cannot sting.
Many insects, like this locust borer, try very hard to imitate bees (called bee mimics) and wasps, and do a surprisingly good job of it!
Hope you enjoy this 25% of 213 captures I took here this day!
This is a Crab Spider (Thomisidae) with cryptic colors that I found on the bed liner of my truck today. I don't know what it was doing in the bed of my truck, and it quickly got away from me when I lowered the tailgate. I guess this spider is a male, though it seems to be missing a palp. I reckon it's either genus Xysticus or Ozyptila or Coriarachne or Bassaniana - one of those groups of similar cryptically colored spiders. I have another recent photo of a similar spider in here, though I think that one has stubbier front legs. Whatever kind this one is, it's an interesting spider and a surprise to find in my truck. The uncanny crab, that's an expert at cryptic camouflage through putting sand particles on it's carapace.
Here's the two as I found them at Anilao pier.

The camera had a horrible problem with noise at even moderate iso. I turned that weakness into a strength by using it to make these images of a vintage party look old timey. The noise, aspect ratio and sepia were all in camera. There's been no processing.

Eastern Screech Owl
Megascops asio
During February of 2009, I found these two owls trying to avoid detection against a beech tree in my woods. It is amazing how cryptic these gray phase owls are against the gray bark of the beech tree.
A week or two earlier, a large dead tree had fallen in the woods. Presumably, they had a nest hole in that old dead tree, and were now "out of house and home." I immediately bought a nest box and mounted it on another tree in the woods. They have used it on and off since then, but they've had to compete with the squirrels for it. This spring, I removed the box from the tree and mounted it on a pole with a squirrel guard. The owls are using the box now, and presumably have young as I write this. They are remarkably secretive and seldom seen, but I fully expect to see some fuzzy faces peering from the nest box hole in the coming weeks.

The Cryptic Rest Posture !
The Brettus sp. was for quite some time synonymised with Genus Portia.
The Genus Brettus has quite a few similarities with the Portia... " The Cryptic Rest Posture" being one of them ... when at rest the spider pulls the legs close to the body and the palps besides the chelicerae !
