CREATURES #5 is an interactive installation by Pier Giorgio De Pinto supplemented with the presence of the dancer Katja Vaghi. She will observe, reproduce and elaborate the movement generated by the audience in front of the digital installation.

Beside the five traditional senses, important to our everyday activities are balance and the kinesthetic sense or proprioception. These last two are central to dance. Dance thus work predominantly with our six and seven sense! The installation wants to make the audience aware of their and other people’s movement and convey the message that any movement produced by any one can potentially generate dance material.

A camera via software will use webcam effects decoding people in front of a screen. The installation modifies the result of the effects thanks to movement and strength of natural light caught by the camera. Similarly, at set interval, the dancer will observe, reproduce and elaborate the movements produced by the audience in front of the installation.

The intent is to make the audience conscious of their own movements and that of others. When interacting with the installation they will mostly be aware of their intentions but not of the aesthetic potential they are generating. Thus, the audience will have the choice of continuing interacting with the installation and/or with the dancer.

We’re prototyping new ways to move animated creatures for our upcoming Haunted House with lower-school and middle-school students in our Maker Art class this fall.

In this after-school workshop, students will build a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.

To prepare for this class, my associate Sarah Brewer and I are prototyping an animated creature, using laser cut wood and cardboard to make it move up and down, as if flying.

This open-close mechanism was designed by maker HyunJoo Oh, who is working with PaperMechatronics.net. She has graciously shared their detailed instructions with us. Much appreciated!

We will combine arts and technology such as this to bring our class creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots and automata like these, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.

We are offering this class in two different schools this fall. At the Lycée Français in Sausalito, we teach lower school students in grades 4 and 5, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 8, 2016. At Tam High School, we teach middle school students in grades 6 to 9, every Wednesday at 3:30pm, from September 28 to November 16, 2016.

Students will create their own interactive art, in a playful way that makes learning more fun. Working collaboratively, they will make lights blink, sounds play and things move — bringing characters to life inside a cardboard ‘wonderbox.’

I love the company Imaginism Studios; they always have cute stuff and they're always at conventions. So I go up to a guy who had done a little sketch on the back of a print I had bought at NYCC, and I ask if he's doing sketches. He gets all weird, and says not really, but it's slow so why not. They he asks how much they're going for, and I'm like 'What do you mean?' and he's all 'Well they're not for free, right?', which was funny, because up until this one, I hadn't paid for any. So I say probably $10, and that's what he charged me. But it was just weird.

Introducing the Attacknids, the ultimate in battling robotics! Dubbed the greatest toy in the universe, the Attacknid is a giant robotic spider geared for destruction. Equipped with Destroyer spheres, Dissector discs and Snyper darts which fire in all directions, the Attacknid eliminates ALL that stands in its way. It's no slouch on defense either, with protective exploda armor which explodes off the main body if hit.

The only thing capable of taking on another Attacknid... is itself. Challenge your Attacknids with one another in combat! Successfully land 3 direct hits, and its intelligent battle core automatically powers off to reduce further damage to itself.

The Attacknid is also capable of scaling all terrain types, and is remote controllable up to distances of 100m. Available in two models; the red Doom Razor and the blue Stryder!

The dawn of new age toys has come. Embrace the revolution and get your Attacknid today at TOYTAG | Play at its Finest!
