Went on a really cool tour today. The eastern span of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge is being replaced. Some of you may recall that in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (during the '89 World Series) knocked out a section of this bridge. It only took them a month to replace the failed sections and get traffic moving again into San Francisco. But it's taking them 24 years to open the replacement span.
The tour was on a boat seeing it from beneath, and up on the new bridge deck. Great weather for a tour. Here are some highlights.

The "Rice: research to production" course, held for the second time on 19 May-6 June at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), brought together 29 participants from 13 countries across the developed and developing world.
The participants included undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from developed countries such as Canada, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and scientists from developing countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mozambique, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation in the United States, the Gatsby Foundation in the United Kingdom, and IRRI, the course also seeks to reverse the one-way traffic of recent decades that has seen thousands of young scientists from the developing world studying and then taking jobs in the developed world.
Students from the developed countries, many of whom had never set foot in a rice field before, began to understand the challenges rice farmers face in simply trying to grow enough food to feed themselves and their families.

The goal was to take photos of each course. It was just too good, we kept eating the food before the photo was taken.
The presentation was very nice, but this is just what I served myself.

A course run by military veterans supporting people into work as well as rejuvenating a local area has seen great success with one participant Laura Wood now employed as a school lab technician.
Laura, from St Ives, was the only female to take part in the Active Plus Local project in Penzance. Suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder she was referred onto the course by Jobcentre Plus.
Active Plus Local is funded through the DWP District Flexible Support Fund and led by Active Plus in partnership with Rebuild Southwest (RSW). It supports participants who are receiving Employment and Support Allowance combines teamwork, communication and job search skills with community-based work activity.
