The Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event is an equestrian eventing competition held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Rolex Kentucky is a CCI**** event...the only four star event in the US. Four stars is the highest level of competition...the same level of competition as Eventing at the Olympics.

Despite the name, competition takes place over FOUR days...two days of Dressage (due to the large number of entries) followed by Cross Country on Saturday and Show Jumping on Sunday.

Rolex 2011 took place under bright blue skies despite historic amounts of rainfall during April '11 in Kentucky.

Early Saturday morning at the Horse Park finds the riders walking the course, studying the jumps for takeoff and landing spots, trouble areas, etc. Sinead Halpin (#43) will wind up in third place overall, the highest finishing US rider. Susan Beebee (#38), also of the US, will finish 23rd.

To the left, the rather nice Municipal golf course at Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, taken (not be me) in the mid-1990s. To the right, almost the same viewpoint (I should have stood a couple of meters further forward and a little to my right) as it is today.

Sadly, the golf course closed in 2017 through lack of support and money, but happily, perhaps, is now a rather nice nature reserve.

Notably, my first upload in around four years! Sorry for the slight hiatus!

The golf course in LaCrosse has always been divided by the railroad. Right behind me, is where the CB&Q depot used to stand. I got a few looks from the golfers for waiting for this shot. I just stare back at them, as I think chasing a ball around with a stick, in order to get into a hole is a waste of time. (Although I do play, for work only, and yes, I suck)

Barnetby United (black & white) and Crowle Colts Development battle for the ball at Silver Street during a second round tie in the Scunthorpe & District League's Sporting Shield.

The Railwaymen led 2-0 after 23 minutes but Crowle pegged them back to 2-2. Barnetby went 4-2 ahead before a late strike from the visitors ensured a tense period of stoppage time.

I visited Frear Park in Troy, New York, USA on October 7, 2014 & walked the half mile trail around Wright Lake. It is just a 4-minute drive from my new home, so I suspect I'll visit often! The park has many aspects--playground, golf course, tennis courts, cafe, in addition to the trails. One of twenty-one shots.

Washington Race Course in Charleston, SC (now Hampton Park, next to The Citadel). The track was run by the SC Jockey Club, & operated from 1792-1882. The wealthy planters raced their horses here, often with slave jockeys. The races were one of the highlights of the Charleston social scene; duels were also held here. During the Civil War, Union POWs were kept here, with the officers imprisoned in the ladies clubhouse. Many died & were buried in the infield / near the former clubhouse/grandstand. In 1865, freed slaves built a fence around the graves, adding an arch that read "Martyrs of the Race Course." They held a procession in honor of the dead soldiers which is now known as the first Memorial Day. Mary Murray Drive is a one way road with bike lane that circles the entire park; it is literally built on top of the racetrack footprint. The original track entry posts were given to August Belmont for his new track in NY that opened in 1905, where they are still found at the Belmont Park entrance today.

Our delicious multi-course meal at Shimizu! This was our first ryokan experience of the trip and we were very impressed by the food. Soy-braised fish, tempura vegetables, potato salad, tofu slices and deep-fried potato fritter-thing, and squash. And the mystery dish cooking in back, in a covered pot over a little open-flame...

The Build & Bake course at River Cottage HQ down in Devon. It's a great course - you learn how to build a clay oven, and how to bake amazing bread, all in a day. It starts with a trip down to the pond to get clay, and ends with a beautiful loaf of your own to take home.

English Courses

General English courses are taught using the “Interchange” student books and workbooks from the Cambridge University Press.

Frequent check-ups on language level are conducted throughout the course. Quizzes, mid-terms, and final examinations are given in all courses, so that the instructor can follow your progress and note any impediments in your language development.

In order to move on to the next level, students are required to achieve a minimum grade of 70% on their final examination.

Classes are given for two hours daily, five days a week, to ensure our students constant practice and exposure to the English language. Students are allowed a maximum of 5 excused absences only.
