The Evanston Fire Department received 911 reports of a fire at 1560 Oak, shortly after 11 p.m. Upon arrival, Engine Company 21 reported heavy fire from the 2nd floor in the rear of the building. Fire damage was extensive throughout the structure. Damage was estimated at $800,000 to the historic structure.
The building was unoccupied and under permitted construction at the time of the fire; no civilian or firefighter injuries reported; A 3rd level MABAS Box Alarm was initiated to provide coverage to the City of Evanston and provide additional fire and medical units to the scene to assist with extinguishment and overhaul support at the fire building.
The fire was struck around 12 a.m.; Damage was limited to the 1560 Oak structure due to efforts of firefighters to protect the 5 story hotel and commercial building immediately adjacent to the fire building. The 5 story building houses the Margarita European Inn a bed and breakfast, and the Pensiero Ristorante. This allowed the guests to return by 1 a.m.
