Last evening the fire department had a controlled burn/training for new cadets. 19* out and Dave was gone for a good seven hours. I rode out for a few hours. One has to salute these men and women for their dedication.

Nous sommes en 1814. Le capitaine de vaisseau Jacques Mathieu RÉGNAULD, commandant du Régulus, un deux ponts trois mâts, reçoit l’ordre de contrôler l’embouchure de la Gironde pour en interdire l’entrée aux britanniques. Accompagné de trois bricks (le Malais, le Sans-Soucis, et le Java) il part accomplir sa mission. Mouillé en rade du Verdon, les quatre navires durent faire très rapidement face à une escadre anglaise d’une dizaine de navires qui venait reprendre le contrôle de l’embouchure.

Face à la puissance de feu de la flotte anglaise, les français vont se mettre à l’abri devant le fort de Meschers. La situation est désespérée. Suivant alors les instructions qu’il avait reçues de sa hiérarchie, le capitaine Régnauld décide de saborder sa flotte plutôt que de la laisser aux mains des anglais. Dans la nuit du 7 au 8 avril 1814, les équipages sont débarqués. Les officiers disposent à des endroits stratégiques des matières combustibles et au milieu de la nuit y mettent le feu.

La légende voudrait que le Régulus brûla durant 3 jours et 3 nuits. C’est depuis cette nuit du 7 au 8 avril 1814 que les michelaises et les michelais ont pris l’habitude d’appeler ce groupe de grottes du nom du Régulus.

Winter is a lean time for me to find lots of neat nature subjects to photograph so here's a scene from work today. My co-workers who are all specially trained to fight wildfires are conducting a controlled burn in a small waterway that has a large population of reed canary grass. Reed canary grass is aggressive, invasive and non-native here in Iowa where it chokes out our valuable native grasses and sedges in settings like this. Reed canary grass has practically no value for birds and wildlife and is essentially a flora & fauna diversity desert. Reed canary grass is very difficult to control by conventional means - spraying, mowing, spring burns - but some recent research suggests that a winter burn, if possible, might really set it back some. I guess we'll see next summer.
