George Stoppel, a German immigrant, built a limestone farm house circa 1861. Over the years several alteration and additions were made to the house. One addition was the kitchen (on the right side in the photograph). The limestone house is unique in that there are few others in and around Olmsted County that matches this structure in terms of age and structural integrity. The house, and other buildings on the farmstead, are excellent example of immigrant settlement and farming in southeast Minnesota. The George Stoppel Farmstead is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is a contributing structure.

Elizabeth Public Schools is dedicated to recognizing the excellence of those who continually contribute to the district’s vision of becoming one of the best school systems in America. The Night of Excellence Ceremony was created to honor students who have performed at a prestigious level through demonstrating exceptional dedication, determination, and perseverance.
The next group of talented, dedicated young men and women and the professionals who lead them in their high caliber performances have achieved not only a State championship title but also a National championship title. They are now the three-time defending state and national champions in US Bands Group 5A after winning the state and national championships in 2013! They have also gone undefeated in three consecutive seasons!
If that isn’t excellent enough, they were also the only high school group to be selected to perform at Super Bowl 48 here in New Jersey this past February. How big of a deal was it for this group to perform at the Media Day and Gameday events for Super Bowl 48? The game was watched by 112.2 million people in the United States, the largest television audience in United States history.
Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy
The next group of students are part of the school that was ranked among the best high schools in New Jersey and America by The Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report. Lastly, this school was recently identified by the State of New Jersey as ‘Very High Performing’ in the category of Academic Achievement in both peer and statewide comparisons.
Terence C. Reilly School No. 7
Last, but not least, is a school that was one of 59 throughout the country to be nationally recognized as a National Title I Distinguished School for exceptional student achievement in 2013. This designation is awarded in honor of the efforts of schools across the country in making significant improvements for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, highlighting the success of hundreds of schools in the categories of exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years and closing the achievement gap between students.
In 1814, the buildings- the Junior Officers' Quarters (to the right) and the Enlisted Barrack- were one and half stories high with dormer windows and no porch. During the 1830's, major improvements were made to the fort, and second stories were added to the buildings. The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Junior Officers' Quarters and Enlisted Barrack are contributing buildings.

The two-story Greek Revival style inspired house was built in 1875 for Dr. William Royall. Dr. Royall was a professor of Greek at nearby Wake Forest College. The side-gabled house with a slate roof with eave returns, two interior chimneys, plain weatherboard, and 6-over-6 sash windows feature a double door entrance with transom and sidelights and a bay window on the west side. On the east side is a one-story side-gabled building that may have been the original kitchen and dining room. It is now attached to the house. The monumental portico was added in the 20th century to replace the original porch. A desire to help students make career choices positioning them for lifelong success is one of the motivations a Wichita couple shares in contributing to Emporia State University’s comprehensive fund-raising campaign.
Roger D. and Carla (Bailey) Smith are making an estate gift in excess of $1 million to Now & Forever: The Campaign for Emporia State University.
A portion of the Smiths’ gift will benefit a Success Center fund.
One of the campaign’s 18 Big Ideas, the Success Center will weave together academic advising, student retention services and a learning and tutoring center for students as they progress through their coursework. Selecting the necessary courses to graduate on time and identifying career options post-graduation are additional components of the Success Center.
The Smiths are also gifting a portion of their estate to establish two scholarships in their names to benefit graduates of public high schools in Wichita, where the couple lived and worked until retirement, Paola (Roger’s hometown), and Ellsworth (Carla’s hometown).

Flamenco, in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, but also having a historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.
The oldest record of flamenco music dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. The development of flamenco over the past two centuries is well documented: "the theatre movement of sainetes (one-act plays) and tonadillas, popular song books and song sheets, customs, studies of dances, and toques, perfection, newspapers, graphic documents in paintings and engravings. ... in continuous evolution together with rhythm, the poetic stanzas, and the ambiance.”
On 16 November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

A lighthouse has been at Watch Hill Point since 1808. The present lighthouse was built in 1856 as a replacement for the earlier lighthouse. The Watch Hill Light lighthouses complex has 45-feet tall square, rock-face granite-block tower topped with a cast-iron and glass lantern, attached to a two-story, hip-roof, brick keepers' house with a 1-story ell extending to the rear. The station complex also includes a stuccoed shed originally built as an oil house (1855-56), a brick signal house (early 20th century), and a garage-workshop (1939). The light was automated in 1986 and is an active aid to navigation. The Watch Hill Lighthouse is located in the Watch Hill Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is contributing property. Designed for a new generation of buyers who are not willing to be defined by their choice of vehicle body type, the Infiniti Q30 challenges convention with its bold character and daring shape. The car stays true to the signature design cues from the original 2013 concept and exemplifies Infiniti's design-led, customer-centric approach to product development. The unconventional stance and asymmetric interior contribute to an overall design that is certain to command attention.

Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration
Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.
The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.
Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.
In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.
Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.
“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.
DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.
“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

The British Ministry of Information commissioned John Singer Sargent to contribute a large-scale work to a planned Hall of Remembrance commemorating Anglo-American cooperation. Traveling to the front in July 1918, Sargent witnessed the harrowing aftermath of mustard gas attacks. Gassed - a six-metre-long tableau - depicts a procession of wounded men stumbling, blindfolded, towards a dressing station.
The painting has become widely recognized as an embodiment of the pain of war in a strangely serene and dignified manner. Virginia Woolf, in her essay The Fleeting Portrait, wrote of Gassed that it "at last pricked some nerve of protest, or perhaps of humanity". It now hangs in the Imperial War Museum in London.

The curtains contributed to a neat composition here that I love of this sweet calico of mine - Trinity. December 31, 2008. What I love about this shot is that it was taken with little fuss in natural light and not touched; but looks like she has the only color in this frame and all the rest is B&W and the snow out the window just adds a cool touch. One of my favorite shots to-date.
Built in 1841, this timber-frame house reflects a West Indies architectural style adapted for South Carolina’s Lowcountry. It was a popular choice for planters’ seasonal homes before the Civil War and later became a common design for farmhouses. The large square attached kitchen was added to the main house in the 1930s. Today, the Heyward House serves as both a visitor center/historical center and a venue for special events. Located in the Bluffton National Historic District, it is a contributing property.

What does design contribute to human rights?
MU and We Are Foundation host a Design and Human Rights Forum on 19 April. We Are Foundation asked itself: how does design contribute to human rights issues? The conclusion was that there is much room left for improvement. The goal of the Design and Human Rights Forum is to brainstorm about ways in which design can support human rights defenders in their practice.
Human rights defenders are often forced to work in very hostile environments, with a scarcity of resources and a lack of allies. They are constantly confronted with threats such as incarceration, enforced disappearance and violence.
The design initiative We Are Foundation, in collaboration with Justice & Peace Netherlands, and MU, wants to open up a dialogue between the government, human rights defenders and creatives, in order to explore ways in which design can support human rights defenders in their practice.
On 19 April, you can expect presentations by We Are Foundation about their project We Are Human Rights, and by Justice & Peace about their initiative Shelter City. Next to this, there will be workshops with international human rights defenders. Our goal is to jump start an engaging conversation.
We Are Foundation is a strategic design agency for societal impact. As such, the foundation strives to promote the application of design as an extensive tool for problem-solving, as well as to extend its scope to fields such as international law and ethics. With their project We Are Human Rights, We Are Foundation tries to establish a role for design in problem solving for human rights issues.
Justice & Peace has developed the Shelter City. This initiative provides shelter, rest and respite to human right defenders at risk, while providing them trainings with relevant knowledge, and contacts to support them in their future jobs.

Weather the greenhouse effect is contributing to the climactic changes
we are expiencing, our energy glutton society has made little progress in reducing our dependence of foreign oil. If we changed our ways, countries like Saudi Arabia could be delt with honestly instead of hippo critic manner which is our habit. They are the very type of county we claim to deplore: illegitimate government with a small "royal" ruling class suppressing the masses, the fund all the radical violent Islamic terrorist groups from Al-quaida to Hamas and Hezbollah whose stated goal and only goal is to destroy Israel and it;s allies (that means us}, all but one of the participants in 9/11 were Saudis, the Sect that wants to return the entire planets population to the garish rules of behavior in Islam of the 7th century are the Wahhbists, who are Saudis. But because of oil we look the other way with regard to their plethora of nefarious behaviors. Oh yes, they are good friends with the bushes.

This panel will examine the causes of water conflict in the region, discuss implications for U.S. interests, and examine possible interventions to support better water governance.
