I usually prefer to stay behind the camera, but today I decided to make a appearance to thank everyone that contributed to the fundraiser I'm doing for Japan's earthquake and tsunami. There are currently 80 favorites..and counting! My goal by this morning was 25, who knew when I woke up it was 50 something. Thank you for your support guys!

More than 300 scholarship recipients and the local organizations and individuals who contributed to scholarship funds at USG were honored during our fifth annual Scholarship and Donor Recognition Luncheon on November 14, 2014. Over $850,000 in scholarship aid was awarded this fall to numerous deserving students at USG.
Two scholarship recipients spoke at this year’s luncheon on behalf of their fellow scholars: Andrew Richardson of the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing, and Yancy Padilla, an alumni of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's social work program at USG. Remarks were offered by Crystal Carr Townsend, President of the Healthcare Initiative of Montgomery County, as well as Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Executive Director of the Universities at Shady Grove. The luncheon was emceed by Steve Hull, the Vice-Chair of USG's Board of Advisors and the editor and publisher of Bethesda Magazine.
USG would like to congratulate this year's scholarship recipients, and extend our sincere gratitude to the donors, partners, faculty and staff for their continuing support of a positive learning experience for students on our campus.

The Aldie Mill complex is in the Aldie Mill Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The granary building is a contributing property.

The McMinnville Historic District is an area of approximately 15 acres in which the unifying theme represented by the, 51 contributing buildings is the para11el development of commerce and railroad and highway transportation in the bustling Willamette Valley farming community and county seat between 1880 and 1937. The district meets National Register Criteria A and C in the context of local history as the place where the community's largest, best preserved and most noteworthy historic commercial buildings are concentrated. The district extends 6 1/2 blocks along Third Street, historically the main, east-west stem of the business district. Buildings along Third Street represent several phases of development but have a marked cohesion by virtue of their density, common scale, materials and overall design elements. While ground story storefronts have been altered over the years, distinguishing features of the upper stories are intact and provide visual continuity. Descendents of many of the community’s early settlers are owners of property or businesses within the district today.
The development of the railroad brought about immediate change in McMinnville's identity. The decade of the 1880's in McMinnville was one of rapid growth. The population grew from 400 in 1880 to 1,500 in 1886-87. The McMinnville Development
League, an organization which encouraged settlers and businesses to settle in McMinnville, was established between 1880 and 1910 •. It is in this decade that the first substantial buildings were erected, four of which stand today. The Schilling Building, Braly Block, Knights of Pythias, and Cook's Hotel are two and three story masonry buildings with Italianate and Queen Anne detailing typical of the period. These four structures are the oldest extant buildings in the historic district. Yamhill County Bank was the earliest bank in
McMinnville and was located in the Braly Block. In 1888, Yamhill County Bank became McMinnville National Bank with J. W. Cowls serving as its first president. In 1928, McMinnville National Bank and U.S. National Bank merged to become U.S. Bank. The First National Bank of McMinnville was established in 1883 as The Bank of McMinnville with Jacob Wortman serving as its president. Both U.S. Bank and First National Bank remain in the historic commercial core of McMinnville, though both institutions have since constructed contemporary buildings.

Not long after boy band TVXQ's debut in 2003, news about Lee's unprecedented plans of forming another boy band quickly spread on the Internet. In early 2005, Lee confirmed the news and announced that an all-boy project group of twelve members would debut near the end of the year, promoting this singing group to be "The Gateway to Stardom of Asia."[7] Lee announced that that most members in this group were chosen because of their performing experiences as actors, MCs, models, and radio hosts prior debut. Heechul and Kibum were already established entertainers, and most of the other members had already made various kinds of appearances on television and media.[8][9][10] Highly inspired by the rotational concept of Japan's girl group Morning Musume, this group would also experience line-up changes, with new members replacing some selected members every year to keep the group constantly young and all-rounded. This concept was then newly introduced to the K-pop market.

I've already contributed my official photo to this week's photo challenge. But I thought I'd add another "animal" photo to the pool anyway. This is a common house fly feasting on some sugar in my kitchen.
This, I thought, is Fly Heaven. An eldorado, a fly bonanza or a klondyke. If flies think this way (if they think at all) I don't know, but sugar in abundance must be a good thing for these creatures.
Anyway, I was fooling around with my 50mm lens on a 25mm extension tube again, and got this shot. I have to say that it's very hard getting sharp pictures when doing macros, even when using a tripod. Had to apply quite a lot of sharpening, so this isn't my finest photographic moment. But it's a fun snapshot of a happy fly anyway.

The Palace Theatre opened its door in 1921 as a vaudeville house. In the 1930s the Palace changed from vaudeville to showing motion pictures. In the mid 1990s the building was facing domolition. The community saved the Classical Revival style building. In 2012, the building was hosting the performing arts. The building is located in the Corsicana Commercial Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.

Faith leaders and concerned citizens gathered outside the Suffolk House of Corrections to publicly ask ICE officials to release Francisco Rodriguez, an MIT janitor whose son Josué Mateo Rodriguez was born on Monday evening in an emergency delivery. ICE officials offered no response to a request by Mr. Rodriguezâs lawyers for his 24-hour release from detention as his wife underwent labor.
ICE detained Mr. Rodriguez at his last check-in on July 13, despite his compliance with their requests. The federal government was prevented from deporting him by stays issued on July 14 by the Massachusetts District Court and the Board of Immigration Appeals.
Francisco Rodriguez has lived in the U.S. since 2006. He has lived in the greater Boston area for 10 years, specifically in Chelsea for the last 6 years. He is the father of two American citizen children, 10-year-old Mellanie and a 5-year-old Jessica, with a third child on the way next month. For the past five years, he has been a janitor at MIT. In addition, he runs his own carpet cleaning company. He is a member of his childrenâs school parent committee, of the community organization Chelsea Collaborative, of the Church Tabernaculo biblico seguidores de Jesus, and a union member of 32BJ SEIU (Service Employees International Union) at MIT. Mr. Rodriguez has no criminal record, pays his taxes, and contributes to his community, church, childrenâs school and workplace.
When Mr. Rodriguez arrived to the country, he applied for asylum in 2007. He was denied asylum in December of 2009, and his appeal was denied in July of 2011. He was later granted prosecutorial discretion and has received a Stay of Removal every year since that time. However this past month, when Francisco applied for a Stay, it was denied. If ICE grants Mr. Rodriguez a Stay of Removal, he can continue to work, take care of his family, and contribute to our community. In addition, next year Mr. Rodriguezâs mother, who is a legal permanent resident, will become a citizen. Soon afterwards, a pathway to residency will open for Francisco when his mother files a petition on his behalf.

Born in Oederan (Germany) in 1944, Igor Mitoraj is a Polish artist who contributed not less than artworks at La Défense.
He studied painting at the Kraków School of Art and at the Kraków Academy of Art under Tadeusz Kantor. After graduating, he had several joint exhibitions, and held is first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Krzysztofory Gallery in Poland. In 1968, he moved to Paris to continue his studies at the National School of Art.
Shortly afterwards, he became fascinated by Latin American art and culture, spending a year painting and travelling around Mexico. The experience led him to take up sculpture.
He returned to Paris in 1974 and two years later he held another major solo exhibition at the Gallery La Hune, including some sculptural work. The success of the show persuaded him that he was first and foremost a sculptor.
Having previously worked with terracotta and bronze, a trip to Carrara, Italy, in 1979 turned him to using marble as his primary medium and in 1983 he set up a studio in Pietrasanta. In 2006, he created the new bronze doors and a statue of John the Baptist for the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome.
Mariam Harutyunyan, the Executive Director of A Seat at the Table, and Wietse Van Ransbeeck, CEO of CitizenLab, contribute to a panel on "Social Cohesion: Bridging the Gap in Polarized Societies" at the EU-US Young Leaders Seminar on Active Civic Participation.
