Water scarcity and conflict over freshwater resources have contributed to an “arc of instability” stretching from West Africa through the Maghreb and across the Mediterranean to the Middle East. Rural livelihoods are collapsing, displacing many, and violent extremist organizations like Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, and ISIS are gaining footholds in areas where governance is weak. As local communities demand better provisioning of water, insurgent groups, building on discontent, use water to finance their operations and as a weapon of war. This panel will examine the causes of water conflict in the region, discuss implications for U.S. interests, and examine possible interventions to support better water governance.

In 1904 Andrew Carnegie contributed $30,000 toward the construction of a building for the university's library, which held 16,000 volumes and was crowded into a corner of what is now Cutler Hall. Carnegie stipulated that the library be open to "all Athens citizens, school teachers, and children." Carnegie Library, as the building was originally named, was built in 1904 and dedicated on June 14, 1905. It was used as Ohio University's library until 1930 when the Chubb Library was built.
To help establish architectural variety on the campus, Carnegie Library was built in Second Renaissance Revival style. It features corbeled brick arcading and keystone arches over the windows. The original building also included a marble rotunda, which has since been removed.
After the construction of Chubb Library, the building was remodeled for classrooms and offices. The Carnegie Library building was renamed Carnegie Hall in 1936.
The building was completely renovated and again renamed, in 1985, and in January of 1986 the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism moved in. The dedication was held on May 2, 1986.
In recognition of a $1.5 million endowment established for the journalism school by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the building name was changed in 1985 to honor the late E. W. Scripps, founder of one of the most successful media organizations in the country.
Prior to being renamed in 1985, Scripps Hall was named Carnegie Hall, and before that, Carnegie Library. Andrew Carnegie was a multimillionaire born in Scotland and educated at the Lancasterian school. He came to the United States in May of 1848, settling in Allegeheny, Pennsylvania. His business life was in industry. He received many honorary degrees. In his own words he was a "distributor of wealth" for the improvement of mankind.

Here was the former Halligan Coffee Company Building, a coffee factory built in 1907 per the official documentation of the surrounding historic district.
That same documentation says: "The overall design of the building has the appearance of an office building rather than a factory." But I think it looks more like an apartment building than either of these.
Well it was converted to apartments (the "Crescent Lofts") in 2015, per a news article in the Quad City Times ("Downtown Davenport draws more residents," April 23, 2015). So now its function matches its appearance. But do you find that satisfying?!
There is a Davenport Citibus Route 1 bus, destined for Hy-Vee, advertising Kimberly Car City.

The single-room frame First African Baptist Church was built in 1935, replacing an early church built in 1893. As a place of worship, the church was the center of community life, serving not only the religious, but also the educational needs of the people. On one corner of the front facade is a small marble plaque set in concrete with names of church leaders.
The church is located on the north end of Cumberland Island where former enslaved people established a community following the Civil War. They were squatters having no formal ownership of the land. In the early 1890s the owners of a newly established resort hotel purchased a five acre tract on the north end of the island, and divided the land into small lots that were sold to blacks living in the area. By selling the land, the hotel owners were providing themselves with a ready accessible labor pool. By acquiring legal title to property, the former enslaved and their descendants were able to live and work in their home community. Further, they were able to preserve their cultural practices and folkways.
The black people who lived in community called "The Settlement," are gone. The Cumberland National Seashore owns and maintains the church. The church building is located in the High Point - Half Moon Bluff Historic District listed on the National Register of historic Places and is a contributing property.
What does design contribute to human rights?
MU and We Are Foundation host a Design and Human Rights Forum on 19 April. We Are Foundation asked itself: how does design contribute to human rights issues? The conclusion was that there is much room left for improvement. The goal of the Design and Human Rights Forum is to brainstorm about ways in which design can support human rights defenders in their practice.
Human rights defenders are often forced to work in very hostile environments, with a scarcity of resources and a lack of allies. They are constantly confronted with threats such as incarceration, enforced disappearance and violence.
The design initiative We Are Foundation, in collaboration with Justice & Peace Netherlands, and MU, wants to open up a dialogue between the government, human rights defenders and creatives, in order to explore ways in which design can support human rights defenders in their practice.
On 19 April, you can expect presentations by We Are Foundation about their project We Are Human Rights, and by Justice & Peace about their initiative Shelter City. Next to this, there will be workshops with international human rights defenders. Our goal is to jump start an engaging conversation.
We Are Foundation is a strategic design agency for societal impact. As such, the foundation strives to promote the application of design as an extensive tool for problem-solving, as well as to extend its scope to fields such as international law and ethics. With their project We Are Human Rights, We Are Foundation tries to establish a role for design in problem solving for human rights issues.
Justice & Peace has developed the Shelter City. This initiative provides shelter, rest and respite to human right defenders at risk, while providing them trainings with relevant knowledge, and contacts to support them in their future jobs.

Built in 1923-1924, this Pueblo Revival-style building was designed under the purview of superintendent Jesse L. Nusbaum, and built to serve as an Archaeological Museum for Chapin Mesa at Mesa Verde National Park. The building is clad in rough-hewn stone with casement windows, porches with stone and wooden columns, vigas, tapered buttresses, and parapets. Inside, the building houses a large auditorium, a gift shop, a lobby, and exhibit spaces, with exhibits having been recently revised with input from the Puebloan people whose ancestors built the archaeological remains within the park. The interior also features plaster walls with decorative stenciling, wooden ceilings with circular log beams, decorative carved woodwork, a semi-circular corner fireplace, and stained concrete floors. The building is a contributing structure in the Mesa Verde Administrative District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

I like to do good news on here. Featured bee was in trouble. I placed it on a mock orange flower and fell off into the hedge. I eventually revived it over time by breathing on it. Maybe it just had to escape my breath but it did fly away after an hour of observation and care. But what was wrong with it? Many, many bees active all around. Most probably chilled with lack of sun and exceptional coolness on the stone slab I found it on in the shade of the trees. There is a real chill in the air today that reminded me, after some moments of analysis... of the first day of autumn. No of course not but the temperature was out of sync with the summer context.

WWF report today tells me... "The Greater Mekong Region teems with life. In the past seven years, 2 216 new species have been found. These critical natural resources are however under threat. The Greater Mekong is one of the top five threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world. It is threatened by hydropower, road and infrastructure development. Climate change only increases the pressures on the landscapes." So much to fight for but all worth fighting for. Oh yes and finnished the long term paint job on the yard door white with the assistance of Ms McGonigal. Now waterproof and closes and opens without too much difficulty.
The black elder is now flowering at the back. Doesnt receivemuch sun so may explain delay over the wild elder.
