Allow
There is no controlling life.
Try corralling a lightning bolt,
cntaining a tornado. Dam a
stream and it will create a new
channel. Resist, and the tide
will sweep you off your feet.
Allow, and grace will carry
you to higher ground. The only
safety lies in letting it all in –
the wild and the weak; fear,
fantasies, failures and success.
When loss rips off the doors of
the heart, or sadness veils your
vision with despair, practice
becomes simply bearing the truth.
In the choice to let go of your
known way of being, the whole
world is revealed to your new eyes.
~ Danna Faulds
This collection of images is in color—my first collection contained black and white photos. The film simulation I used for this collection was not something I normally would have chosen—it was a little bold, intense and flashy for me. Since I didn’t want to spend money on the FIMO app I was using on my phone for this project I embraced the constraints this led to and used this simulation because it came free with the app. This exercise in getting outside my comfort zone was a growing experience for me. I found it interesting how the app made variable, random decisions for me adding elements I had no control over—bright, saturated colors and simulated light leaks—that added an element of joy, surprise and cheer to the pictures I took which I found to sometimes be uplifting and encouraging.

Jalori Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 10,800 ft (3.120m) above the sea level, situated in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh that links the inner and outer Seraj valley. The Jalori Mata Temple locate here is visited by thousands of devotees from the nearby villages. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The temple though small yet it is visited by every person who comes to the pass.
The Sarolsar Lake is located very close to the pass. The drive to reach the pass is unforgettable.
To make sure one gets his vehicle and self well-prepared before driving this road. At the top of the Jalori Pass there are restaurants available to take lunch, and the Mahakali temple known as Jalori Mata, visited by thousands of devotees from the nearby villages. Jalori Pass is the first Indian pass to open every year, and is driveable by all vehicles, but are advised to go down in first gear only, according to Indian signals. This pass remains closed in peak on winter only. So in months of December, January and February one need to check before using this road. Usually opens around second week of March every year and closes mid december, depending on the snow.
The road's winding design, providing stunning panoramic views, is very curvy and fun for a leisurely ride, so it pays to take it slow. From Ghayagi to Jalori Pass, the road is a mix of mud and pebbles restricting the speed of the vehicle to barely 20 kmph. After Shoja, the climb to Jalori Pass is steep and just about 3 kms before the pass, road conditions become bad, narrow and steep which makes it more difficult to climb even in first gear.
A traveller on this road must follow some rules: Extreme caution advised, drive in first gear only, steepest gradient, most dangerous curves along the road.

Finger lick'n good. I caught this great blue heron licking its lips after swallowing a very tiny fish. It must have been very tasty.
I was impressed with the sharpness of this image considering it is an extreme crop. The original photo contained the complete bird with his neck extended up, and these herons are quite tall. This was from my first experimental shoot using my Canon 500 f/4 on the Sony a7III with the Sigma adapter. I must say I am a bit impressed that this 3-brand mix would work so well together. Of course, the lighting was perfect for this shot and light is always a key factor in generating sharp images.

Macro Mondays - theme: "Contained"
"The fruit is contained in a spiny (very sharp) cupule 5–11 cm in diameter, also called "bur" or "burr".[24] The burrs are often paired or clustered on the branch[19] and contain one to seven nuts according to the different species, varieties, and cultivars.[1][2][25][26] Around the time the fruits reach maturity, the burrs turn yellow-brown and split open in two or four sections. They can remain on the tree longer than they hold the fruit, but more often achieve complete opening and release the fruits only after having fallen on the ground; opening is partly due to soil humidity." Contained columns of basalt. After seeing so much of it your whole life, you have almost no choice but to love it.
There are so many stories contained in this photo. On the surface, this is along one of my favorite roads (located just behind the camera). Looking forward and across the mile of private land is one of my favorite public wilderness areas.
Beyond that is the Columbia River. The mountain on the horizon in Moses Mountain, named after Chief Moses, the leader of one of the local tribes that refused to go to the reservation until there just wasn't any land left to live (more than one band has this story).
The land across the river is the Colville Reservation. This is where a dozen different tribes were forcefully relocated in the early 1900s. Most had no connection to the land prior to being placed there.
For example, the Chief Joseph band of the Nez Perce were originally from northeastern Oregon. They arrived at Colville via Oklahoma (that's a whole mess of stories).
The land I'm standing on while taking this photo was used and lived upon by many different bands, mostly because of the river - Okanogan, Nespelum, Sanpoil, etc.
The river is dammed above and below this spot. Upriver is the Grand Coulee Dam, which flooded 21,000 acres (33 square mile) of native land, including thousands of known graves. Downriver is Chief Joseph Dam, named after the Nez Perce leader. Though the flooding was minimal, it blocked salmon from migrating upstream. The tribes have been fighting since the 1950s for fish ladders.
Farther back in time, the ice sheets dragged and rolled gigantic basalt and granite boulders, throwing them all across the landscape. The Wenatchee tribe has multiple stories of the "ice wall" that receded 13,000 years ago. Most of the tribes of the northwest were not nomadic.
Even farther back, this land marks the northern-most edge of the Columbia lava flows (around 16 million years ago). In places, you can see exactly where the basalt ends and the granite bedrock begins.
The granite formed along with what would later be called Washington state, the land cobbled together from various islands off the old coast of North America.
Most land has these stories, and it's our responsibility to find them and learn and tell what we can.

One of the landmarks in front of our special beach house is an island which has been in existence since we were children. In a drawer in the special "writer's room" was an old watercolor of the island. I played with the image as I wanted to get inside of the art.
My sister and I have been rereading "A Gift From The Sea" and sharing similar thoughts and feelings about islands. Anne Morrow Lindbergh compared her vacation to an island in time where "People, too, become like islands, self-contained, whole and serene; respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverence before the miracle of another individual."
We were blessed with a week like that. Although we were together, we all had many moments of solitude.
“It is in deep solitude that I find the gentleness with which I can truly love my brothers.
The more solitary I am the more affection I have for them ….
Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are,
not for what they say.”

We did what we could
to save this house from fallin'.
But it burns, because it's wood,
and now you'll never call me darlin'.
Not entirely pleased with this: it may come down. But it feels like I haven't uploaded anything in so very, very long. I took this yesterday, and decided I'd at least put it up: why not?
Finals are over, life is good, and just today I packed up everything into my tiny car and drove back home for Christmas. Time for much relaxing, baking, photo-taking and general laziness. :)
Alternate version in the comments, and some from a light-painting shoot I did with friends while I should've been studying for finals.
My friend and I had a talk, where we decided that she was like a tornado, contained only by her skin, spilling from every crevice, and I was as if a tornado in a snowglobe rested inside my chest: so contained, so peaceful from outside. And that's how I ended up taking this. I know it's not a snowglobe, but I liked this just as much.

- Beautiful tall grass seemed afloat on it`s own reflection. I use a technique that narrows down my vision to small fragments instead of trying to see everything at once. Without this technique I would not have shot this one. You might try it when out shooting. You might find a world within our world when getting used to it ~;-)
- The sunset can be seen slightly in the reflection. I chose to not capture the sunlight on the top of the trees because I liked the toning in the shadowed area much better...it contained so beautiful contrasts.
- This pond was inhabited by frogs, so I had to watch my step carefully.
