Gannet - Morus Bassanus

Bempton Cliffs

Double click to view

The gannets are large white birds with yellowish heads; black-tipped wings; and long bills. Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to 2 metres (6.6 ft). The other two species occur in the temperate seas around southern Africa, southern Australia and New Zealand.

Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a height and pursuing their prey underwater. Gannets have a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:

no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;

air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;

positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.

Gannets can dive from a height of 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.

The gannet's supposed capacity for eating large quantities of fish has led to gannet becoming a description of somebody with a voracious appetite.

Gannets are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, normally laying one chalky, blue egg. Gannets lack brood patches and they use their webbed feet to warm the eggs. It takes five years for gannets to reach maturity. First-year birds are completely black, and subsequent sub-adult plumages show increasing amounts of white.

The most important nesting ground for northern gannets is the United Kingdom with about two thirds of the world's population. These live mainly in Scotland, including the Shetland Isles. The rest of the world's population is divided between Canada, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Iceland, with small numbers in France (they are often seen in the Bay of Biscay), the Channel Islands, Norway and a single colony in Germany on Heligoland. The biggest northern gannet colony is on Scotland's Bass Rock; in 2014, this colony contained some 75,000 pairs. Sulasgeir off the coast of the Isle of Lewis, St. Kilda, Grassholm in Pembrokeshire, Bempton Cliffs in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Sceilig Bheag, Ireland and Bonaventure Island, Quebec are also important northern gannet breeding sites.

Young gannets were historically used as a food source, a tradition still practised in Ness, Scotland, where they are called guga. Like examples of continued traditional whale harvesting, the modern day hunting of gannet chicks results in great controversies as to whether it should continue to be afforded exemption from the ordinary protection afforded to sea birds in UK and EU law". The Ness hunt is currently limited to 2,000 chicks per year, and dates back at least to the Iron Age. The hunt is considered to be sustainable, as between 1902 and 2003 Gannet numbers in Scotland increased dramatically from 30,000 to 180,000.

Submittal for 1/6/20 Macro Monday's theme of "Contained".

Some tiny 'Yellow Pear' tomatoes, no more than 1 cm wide and a little hessian bag. I think it worked. For Macro Mondays, this week's theme is: contained. Happy Macro Mondays/ HMM

An entrance of the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, Sri Lanka. The Polonnaruwa Vatadage, considered to be the 'ultimate development' of vatadage architecture, was built during the 12th century. Vatadages were usually constructed around stupas which were either built on hallowed ground or contained a relic of the Buddha or an object used by him. The Polonnaruwa Vatadage may have had the tooth relic of the Buddha enshrined within it. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. In 1982 the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa was added to the Unesco world heritage list.

Water in the bottom of my glass whilst looking at my fireplace :)

Winter has been mild and this viola came from my garden. It's contained within a small crystal pot. For Macro Mondays group

A short minute, amalgamation of shots and videos from a Great Blue Heron nest that initially contained four chicks last spring, can be viewed at the following link: youtu.be/7mHaQUzFpWM

It was interesting to see how they interacted when the close quarters of one nest became a bit tiresome for one or more of the chicks.

One chick seemed to get unduly picked on. Though I did not capture it, a chick did fall out of the nest. It was captured while wandering around under the heron rookery, and although it was taken to a home to await pick-up the next morning to be transferred to a rescue shelter, it passed away during the night.

Another short minute 'movie' showing this nest and an Anna's Hummingbird nest during a windstorm, can be viewed here: youtu.be/lPn5ZWiJF5M

Both nests survived the windstorms shown.

The hummingbird nest was raided by a predator less than a week later.

The heron rookery is also in danger. As much as people in North Saanich purport they are for the environment, I know of two rookeries that were cut down. Another one that was started was threatened by development but saved at the last minute, only to be raided by Bald Eagles just before the chicks were ready to fledge.

This rookery is on private property belonging to a yacht club that suddenly decided a restaurant would be the perfect use of this small patch of trees; in spite of the fact that they have extensive land where trees were removed long ago. I'm sure the seasonal noise and stench were a factor in their decision.

The trees were in the process of coming down when several complaints to key people managed to halt the process for now. The herons have just begun their nesting season. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Wholly contained within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the Kodachrome Basin State Park named by the National Geographic Society (with consent from Kodak Film Corp).

The geologic formation seen here includes numerous sedimentary pipes, part of the Entrada Formation, and gypsum mineral layers forming the white striations in the Carmel Formation rocks.

There are a couple of competing theories as to how the spires came to be; but, whatever the cause, they create a visually stunning landscape to behold, today. Located a mere 20 miles from Bryce Canyon NP, I highly recommend a diversion to this location for sunset!

Macro Mondays “Contained” Theme.

Having felt well New Year’s Eve and Day, I suddenly became ill. The Antibiotics are beginning to work, I think!

I haven’t wanted to eat so when my husband saw this trifle, in our local shop he thought I may be tempted. I had some of it and it was quite nice.

Happy New Year all.

Wikipedia: Gibbons are apes in the family Hylobatidae. The family historically contained one genus, but now is split into four extant genera and 20 species. Gibbons live in subtropical and tropical rainforest from eastern Bangladesh to Northeast India to southern China and Indonesia (including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java).

Also called the lesser apes or small apes, gibbons differ from great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and humans) in being smaller, exhibiting low sexual dimorphism, and not making nests. Like all apes, gibbons are tailless. Unlike most of the great apes, gibbons frequently form long-term pair bonds. Their primary mode of locomotion, brachiation, involves swinging from branch to branch for distances up to 15 m (50 ft), at speeds as high as 55 km/h (34 mph). They can also make leaps up to 8 m (26 ft), and walk bipedally with their arms raised for balance. They are the fastest of all tree-dwelling, nonflying mammals.

Depending on the species and sex, gibbons' fur coloration varies from dark- to light-brown shades, and any shade between black and white, though a completely "white" gibbon is rare.

Lar Gibbon: The lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), also known as the white-handed gibbon, is an endangered primate in the gibbon family, Hylobatidae. It is one of the better-known gibbons and is often kept in captivity.

Conservation status: Endangered

Pennies spilling out of a small glass jar.

Canada stopped making pennies in 2013 because even though they had not contained any copper in a long time, there was still a cost of 1.6 cents to make each 1 cent coin. Even though they are still legal tender officially, businesses have no legal obligation to accept them. And so they don't. And so I have a jar of them.

Wikipedia states: "Anthurium is a genus of herbs often growing as epiphytes on other plants. Some are terrestrial. The leaves are often clustered and are variable in shape. The inflorescence bears small flowers which are perfect, containing male and female structures. The flowers are contained in dense spirals on the spadix. The spadix is often elongated into a spike shape, but it can be globe-shaped or club-shaped. Beneath the spadix is the spathe, a type of bract. This is variable in shape, as well, but it is lance-shaped in many species. It may extend out flat or in a curve. Sometimes it covers the spadix like a hood. The fruits develop from the flowers on the spadix. They are juicy berries varying in color, usually containing two seeds."
