After a heavy snow, we were not able to get to our home-made compost box in the backyard for awhile. This is what we saw when we looked inside. We found it quite beautiful.

If you've failed to hear back from me in the past month, this is why! My phone went missing, and I was flummoxed. Where had it gone?
Yesterday it emerged, zombie like, from the depths of the compost bin, as I used the compost corkscrew aerator thing to give it a turn.
It gave me a shock, like finding a human skull or something.
Anyway, the phone is well and truly kaput, but the sim card still works! So I put it in a fresh new body and I'm back on the blower, folks!
My wife wanted a way to sift the large chunks out of the compost so we made this with stuff we had in the garage. The only thing we bought was the mesh.

the pile is close to my hose and water couple times weekly, whenever I roll out the garbage bins. I use a pitch fork to aerate. About once a month (or 3 months) I use a hoe or shovel to break-down/stir the pile then rebuild it; i shovel to the side then shovel it back in place.
A couple of months back we ate a melon, and disposed of the remains in our compost pile. Little did we know, we'd not seen the last of that melon...

I mashed about in the back yard & woods, then decided to turn the big compost pile. Added stuff from to small bins. Inner core steaming! Wow!
I didn't turn my compost at all last winter and it froze. I'm gonna keep turning this winter to have garden compost early spring :)
Really something to see what looks like a pile of snow, is actually food & leaf waste breaking down to essential elements, high nutrient dirt.
