This is my best example of simplicity because it is very simple and not a whole lot of a story being told in this photo. It is minimal and doesn't really have a focal point.

In Digital Photography class we were to take pictures of different composition ideas that a photographer might use. My teacher gave us different options. The ones shown here are Vertical Pictures, Rule of 3rds, Worms-eye view and Shadows.

This is a medium shot of Segui in front of the shed. I like the way the medium shot allows us to see some details in his face, like his dripping nose and slightly squinting eyes, as well as some detail on his back (like the shedding hair). In terms of composition, I like the soft vertical lines in the background, and the diagonal line that my dog is positioned in. I think the use of lines helps draw attention to his face in a nice way.

What a fascinating assignment! A la Matisse, I cut out random shapes from an old desktop sketchpad that had all my old spills, scribbles, and paint blobs. I used a small pen-like rotary cutter as scissors are too hard on my thumb/hand. Then I had some old 5 x 7 matboard so I brayered some black acrylic on those. Then I glued...and figuring out which way to orient them, portrait or landscape, was the greatest fun AND challenge. At first I had only single shapes, but then realized I wanted the pieces relational somehow, then the moon idea came.

I just never realized how powerful and evocative shapes were before this exercise. THEY TELL STORIES - but I dare say, different stories for each of us. I feel as though I will be able to tiptoe into some non-objective paintings based on this experiment. Thank you, Leslie!

This photo meets project goals because it shows the guinea pig being framed by his house and he is near the lines in the rule of thirds. To take this photo, I put my guinea pig inside his house and put food in front of him to try to get him to come out. Then in photo shop I turned the clarity way up and made it darker because the photo was originally very bright. Something I think I did well was capturing him looking right at me. Some things I wish were different is that I had a more interesting photo and that I didn't have the food in the way and that the carpet up front wasn't so bright. Overall, I don't like this photo.

I plan to start another painting later in the week, but meanwhile I am catching up with editing photos. Here's one that I took back on October 3, on pickup day for The Food Project, which is our CSA, over at Long Hill Gardens. These peppers were in a great big bin. I liked the way they looked, so I took a picture. Today I did a little retouching in iPhoto and then cropped the original to get this composition.

We looked at LOTS of slides. O'Keefe "unpacked" the visual elements so we could observe what the skeletal underpinnings of the paintings were, rather than being "distracted" by color or content.
