This is a shot of two male humpback whales competing for access to a female humpback (who is just swimming along completely unaffected in front of them). We stopped and watched these two for 30 minutes or so. They were chasing each other, colliding, lashing their tails...it was quite the scene. They were also trumpeting, which was such a thrill to hear! I am in Maui for the week and yesterday tried out my new little waterproof camera...not too bad...but I think I'll take out the big guns for today's trip :). Probably more whale photos to come. I hope that all my Flickr friends are well.

It was wonderful to give another talk at The School of Life earlier this month. Many thanks to Nick Turpin and the participants of the Photographing London weekend workshop for a really inspirational afternoon.
I am impressed at the quality of work at these sessions. Once again it's a real lesson for me in setting oneself parameters or a challenge. Inevitably I search for a metaphor in these instances and the mental and physical effort required is certainly of Olympian proportions.
Two marvellous images are worth noting from Laura Fitzpatrick and Tony White. Each in their own way exemplify for me the essence of street photography.
Tony's image, and style now I'm glad to have discovered more of his work, has a real warmth and a resonance with the sensitivity of Tony Ray-Jones. There's certainly an undefinable Englishness to this picture which is a joy.
In contrast Laura's photograph at the foot of Nelson's Column is a tour de force of geometry and timing. It feels so perfect that it ironically touches on contemporary practices of digital manipulation and staged flash mobs, even though the image is entirely of the moment, taken as found with no intervention other than being in the right place at the right time and having the presence of mind to take the picture.
Easy, eh?
The Best Street Photograph Ever

Although we may all have favourite Street Photographers they may not always be the author of our favourite Street Photograph.
It might be a revealing exercise to suggest and vote up or down single Street Photographs to see which images bubble to the top and which images fall to the bottom.
In this way we might get a sense of the popular opinion on what qualities might be inherent in ‘The Best Street Photograph Ever’.
This is a bit of fun but at very least it should make for the creation of a fascinating collection of Street Photographs.
Please feel free to take part, vote images up or down and upload those you think should be included from any era and any Street Photographer.

Along with athletics, the pool swimmers' competitions are one of the mainstays of the Olympic Games. A total of 35 gold medals will be awarded at Paris 2024: 17 each for women and men, plus one in the mixed relay.

The sparrow project is an attempt to improve my bird story telling along with honing eye hand/AF coordination skills using a common subject readily available. The subjects must be in motion as a prerequisite since shooting ducks in a barrel is just no sport at all.
I was spurred into the project due to my complete dissatisfaction of prior attempts while on a trip to Tanzania. Learning the delicate balance between shutter speed, proper long lens techniques, iso settings and AF modes is a challenge for something just slightly slower than a speeding bullet.
This will be ongoing to support my next African adventure later this year.

Activities at Strömsholms Castle at the event Strömsholmsdagarna. mostly anything about horses but other things as well.

Nottingham Omnibus, an offshoot of the eponymous Sheffield Omnibus were briefly a thorn in the side of Nottingham City Transport in the mid-nineties. One of the target routes was NCT's 89 service to Rise Park. This was a profitable route via Mansfield Road and Bestwood Park. Eventually, NCT bought out Nottingham Omnibus to kill off the competition.
The Nottingham Omnibus fleet was made up with a selection of second-hand buses. It was interesting to compare the ex-Tayside 33' Alexander-bodied VRTs with the standard 30' Alexander-bodied VRTs from Northampton.
Former Northampton Transport no.38 (VRP 38S) is seen at Trinity Square in Nottingham city centre.
Red Bull Battle of the Sund is an endurance kite-board competition spanning across the strait of Öresund.
