This plant, similar to the agave, is found in the drier regions of Costa Rica and other Central American countries. The Central Valley and Northern region such as Guanacaste has virtually no rain November thru March, so water collected during those months must be hoarded for the plant to survive. The cup shaped leaves help in the collection process and adapt to the different seasons.
