Eco Superior asked me to do an Earth Hour Comparison on March 28th and 29th from Mount Mckay. I made it up there on the 28th and took images, thanks to Margie and her 4 wheel drive, but she was busy on the 29th so could not get a comparison image at the same time. My beetle never would have made it! After Mount Mckay I headed to Hillcrest to take some images, but obviously it was later in the evening and much darker. Anyway, this is the comparison, and while I was out I did notice that there was a lot of participation in making Earth Hour a success! Good work Thunder Bay! :)

Gummi Bears are made by Haribo, which is short for Hans Riegel Werke, Bonn, Bonn being the capitol of the Federal Republic of Germany, back when that still existed.

Several years ago, Haribo changed their recipe for the German, and probably the whole European market, replacing the artificial colors and aromas with fruit juice. They weren't as good any more.

The bears made for the American market are closer to the original. Oddly, they're being made in Hungary.

Can you tell which are which?

Littlefee Ante v. multihead on pukifee body

Adding more into the colour-comparisons mix, I've now included multiple beta DNG profiles and the default rendering from Canon's own latest version of Digital Photo Professional.

I'm actually quite impressed by the beta DNG profile's results. On the Camera Standard setting (not the Adobe Standard setting), they seem to be just a touch more saturated than the standard DPP rendering, yet retain the same general colouring as DPP.

The Rags and Chromoholics calibrations both appear to over-saturate the reds to varying degrees, while also flattening the specular highlights on the car to be almost completely white, vs. the highlights on the others rendering a warmer orange.

Still worth noting that the fluorescent lights of the scene could be a key factor in throwing off the colour rendering from the calibrations (which were based on bright sunlight), but certainly for minimal hassle the new beta DNG profiles look very promising: better than DPP and far better than the old Camera Raw profiles.

The beta DNG profiles are available here:

- labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles

(Note: you will need Lightroom 2.0 (non-beta) or Camera Raw 4.5 to use them.)

For the calibrated versions, I rather prefer the Rags version of the ACR Calibrator as it seems the Chromoholics version has far over-saturated the red (to the point where the specular highlights are even lost). The difference between the two, if I understand the detailed technical language, is that the Rags version attempts to find the best changes to the primary colour channels while averaging the best results across all colour patches. The Chromoholics version, on the other hand, only pays any attention to the primary colour patches and optimises those, without any apparent regard for the rest of the colour patches.

Perhaps even one step better will be to create a customized profile with the new restructured DNG profiling combined with a ColorChecker chart:

And here are some comparisons to Live Action Christie since I find her to be interesting as the only Midge sculpt in dark vinyl.

Also I keep reading how everyone thinks ALL vintage Christie dolls used a recoloured Midge head, when Midge has a much bigger mouth in comparison to Julia/Christie as well as a different jawline. Comparing them side by side I can see how they modified the Midge sculpt to turn into Christie (the nose and eye sculpts give it away) but I think it’s different enough to not call it a direct Midge recolour.

Here are comparison shots of the old Dragon Priest mold (left) vs. the new one (right). I've tagged the old air bubbles and cancers or impurities. You might also notice by the sheen of the new cast how much smoother the new mold is.

I know I've seen comparison shots of the first brides somewhere on flickr, but I was still very curious about my own, new bride now. Is her body even completely the same as the first brides?

She's got DG-legs, but she's still as tall as the Nu Face dolls, because her torso is longer. And, well, her boobs - but I am sure that's obvious in the pictures... ;)

She also seems lighter than the other dolls. So maybe she doesn't have that nut inside?

Left is the amount of chaff from the regular coffee--about what I'm used to seeing (perhaps a little less).

The decaffeinated coffee had really no chaff (right). Those are actually small flakes of coffee beans, and what is chaff is likely leftover from previous roasts.

This is a comparison between the Photoshop RAW conversion and Nikon Capture conversion of an NEF file from my D70. The full black and white version of the image can be found here. Make sure to look at the full size image to really see the difference. All settings were left to their defaults, using the recorded color temperature.

The reason for this is compare how Photoshop processes RAW images compared to Nikon's supplied software. Photoshop appears to ignore all data in the file besides the color temperature. It also uses a less contrasty response curve, resulting in images that appear very flat.

The left half is the Nikon Capture image and the right half is the Photoshop RAW image. The Nikon conversion definitely lifts values more and provides better separation between dark areas and midtones. The difference between the concrete and the dirt at the top, along with the increased detail on the metal fixture, shows this off nicely.

Sandy looks like a younger version of SIndy ...
