In Karnataka, there would be large-scale damage to the early onion crop, chillies, grapes and pomegranate. The floods have damaged many water tanks and irrigation canals, resulting in rainwater going waste. Keeping in view the magnitude of the situation, requirement for relief operations and the fact that Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have also been affected by drought during current year, Government of India has, in advance, released Rs. 156.84 crore ($3.2 million), for Andhra Pradesh and Rs. 52.26 crore ($1.5 million) for Karnataka. More aid from the government in New Delhi is expected to reach the two states. The Government of India has committed to release Rs 1000 crores each to both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

We asked her ‘what she will do when school reopens.’ She said she is hoping to dry her books before school reopened. (I held the damp books in my hand and thought to myself how much we take for granted). Gangamma was stubborn about wanting to go to school; but her books need to dry!

However, child sponsorship did not stop with that, as is the promise of child sponsorship: two of Varsha’s sisters received timely help that saved them from what could have otherwise been fatal. Sonia, 1½ years, was severely malnourished. With the family’s meagre income from seasonal labour, they could not afford nutritious food for their children. World Vision’s Nutrition Programme in the village saved Sonia from severe Grade 3 malnutrition. Her health gradually improved and today she is a healthy little girl, with no symptoms of malnourishment that nearly threatened to take her life.
Omdevi, 5 years, another sister of Varsha was also affected by typhoid and with support from World Vision for her treatment she has fully recovered. Child Sponsorship reaches beyond the child to help the family and community. In Varsha’s case, her sisters received medical and nutritional care.
The women of Vellairoja *SHG (Self Help Group) in Nilgiris work hard as labourers in tea gardens to earn their daily income. They have rich experience in tea cultivation.
On seeing the interest of the women in Vellairoja SHG, World Vision India’s Area Development Programme (ADP) assisted them with Rs. 2,05,000 for leasing two and half acres of tea land for 3 years. The SHG members contributed Rs.41,000 towards cleaning and maintenance of the given tea land.
The members work this land and get regular employment and income. Every month, the women collect 700kgs of tea leaves. They sell tea leaves at Rs.13/- per kg. The women work with joy and enjoy the fruit of their land.
“We have earned the merit of our community and our husbands are also proud of our achievement. Word Vision India has been providing many livelihood promotion programs; this really has changed the pattern of life for a woman in Nilgiris” says Mailamma - Leader of Vellairoja SHG.
