Pilsen was originally an Eastern European neighborhood, and as such it was critical in Chicago’s reconstruction after the Great Fire of 1871. Pilsen helped raise the city back from its ashes by creating the most active industrial corridor in Chicago. Pilsen is still a working-class neighborhood, and workers “cottages,” churches, and storefronts still exist from that time, although decorated for this generation of neighbors and businesses.
