Kiveton Community Woodland stands on the site of the old Kiveton Park Colliery, having being transformed into a mini country park following the closure of the colliery in 1994. The whole area, including the spoil heap (the pit tip), has now been tastefully landscaped, with areas of woodland, wetland and grassland, and includes several miles of footpaths for walking. Much of the area is carpeted by wildflowers in the spring, including masses of cowslips, whilst the viewpoint near the summit of what was the pit tip has views extending for miles, right over to the Derbyshire hills. At the summit stand these three huge stones, whilst nearby is a cast iron sculpture called Dreaming of Sky (see picture below), depicting a pit pony hauling a tub of coal and commemorating the many ponies that once worked down Kiveton Pit.

☀️ Day in the Park 2024. It was all about the people who were there, and the ones we got to remember. Mayor Terry O’ Connell announced Peter Grace being this year’s Volunteer of the Year, with his wife Connie on-hand to receive his award. The Dan Sorrentino Spirit Award was bestowed on the Derby racer who most exemplified Dan’s enthusiasm and spirit, both of which can never be fully replaced. It’s these Brisbane “greats”, whose humble attitudes and patient perseverance we choose to honor, as they remind us all why we do what we do in this beautiful “City of Stars”! ✨
