After 2 years of faithful service my old BAe Hawk committed suicide yesterday in the desert just outside Joshua Tree, CA.
The preflight check looked normal, all control surfaces looked to be operating correctly and in trim, the takeoff roll looked normal, it rotated fine and took to the air with authority as it always does and then it became immediately obvious that something was very wrong, it banked left very severely. Applying full right aileron and hitting the right aileron trim as many times as I could in a few seconds seemed to have no effect, she stayed in a knife edge type attitude for as long as I could hold her there ... and without a rudder, that was not very long. So, the earth came up to meet her and it was all over.
Those of you old enough to remember the opening sequence to the TV show The Six Million Dollar Man will know exactly what the crash looked like, she tumbled across the desert floor and came to rest in a cloud a dust, never to fly again.
Fortunately all of the electronics and the fan unit seem to have survived just fine, I'll just buy another airframe and transfer all the bits and I'll be flying my favorite plane again soon.
As far as what happened... I can only guess at this point. Perhaps an aileron servo chose that moment to loose it's mind? Perhaps in these very hot days we've been having, one of the wings developed a slight twist? Maybe the old gal just had enough and decided it was time to retire?

A man known as “Prisoner X” has committed suicide in an Israeli jail, in a strange spy drama twist you might see on an episode of Burn Notice. Ben Zygier, 34-year-old Australian immigrant was reportedly recruited by Israel's Mossad spy agency and charged with grave crimes before taking his own life while incarcerated. Israeli criminal attorney Avigdor Feldman – who wouldn’t elaborate about the charges – says he met with Zygier the day before his death and that there were ongoing negotiations for a plea deal in the case.
“I met with a balanced person, given the tragic outcome, who was rationally weighing his legal options,” Feldman told Israel’s Channel 10 television. “His interrogators told him he could expect lengthy jail time and be ostracized from his family and the Jewish community,” Feldman said, adding “There was no heart string they did not pull, and I suppose that ultimately brought about the tragic end.”
Reporting in Israel on the case has been subject to strict government censorship, however this week the government broke its silence after the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that Zygier was being held in isolation over his suspected misconduct while spying for the Mossad. In partially lifting their gag order on the case, an Israeli court said a dual-nationality citizen had been imprisoned secretly under a false name for “security reasons” and was found dead in his cell in what was eventually ruled a suicide.
The hush-hush nature of the case has raised questions in both Australia and Israel about the circumstances behind Zygier’s 2010 detention and subsequent death and have led some to question Mossad’s suspected use of dual Australian-Israeli nationals in their espionage work. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Zygier was one of at least three Australian-Israeli citizens suspected of working with the Mossad intelligence agency.
Israel’s Mossad, America’s CIA, Britain’s MI-6, and the old Russian KGB are perhaps the most well known spy agencies and frequently appear in spy thriller novels, movies and television shows. Nations utilize these services in an attempt to find out what adversaries – and even friends – are up to as they try to learn each other’s secrets. While the nature of Ben Zygier’s spy work isn’t known, he reportedly traveled to Iran, Syria and Lebanon for Mossad. Pray for the agency’s efforts as they attempt to keep Israel safe from foreign enemies and pray for the family Ben Zygier leaves behind.

The flavor of Malort committed a mouth assault. I was so traumatized that, as I drank the shot, I tried to not pay attention to the flavor in my mouth. I blocked it. I have no idea how to describe it, because as it happened I refused to give in language in my head. It was along the lines of "This will be over soon, drink Sprite fast." The Sprite barely cut the flavor. It just took time and water.

For over 35 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world.
The Purple4Polio activities suggested by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland are to raise funds and awareness for End Polio Now, Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate polio across the world.
When a child receives their life-saving polio drops on mass polio immunisation days, their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their polio vaccine.
Rotary’s pledge for a polio free world was made in 1985 when there were 125 polio endemic countries and hundreds of new cases every single day. In the past few years, only two countries have reported cases of polio caused by the wild poliovirus but no child anywhere is safe until every child has been fully vaccinated.
Thanks to Rotary, and the support of our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, there are now just two countries still classed as endemic: Pakistan and Afghanistan.
To finish the job over 2 billion doses of oral polio vaccine still have to be administered, to more than 400 million children in over 50 countries, each and every year. We have to have zero cases of polio and zero positive environmental samples before the world can finally be certified polio free.

Catholic Relief Services has committed more than $1.5 million in private funds to continue its emergency response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The number of deaths and people infected with the virus continues to increase rapidly. CRS and its Caritas partner have been working to train more than 400 volunteers on key messages about Ebola as well as psychosocial counseling for those who’ve lost loved ones to the disease. Education is the only way to stop the spread of the disease, so CRS has been working on public awareness campaigns aimed at teaching the population about Ebola, including its spread and prevention.
CRS provided funding to help rehabilitate this graveyard in Freetown, Sierra Leone. As the Ebola outbreak continues to escalate at an alarming rate, safe and dignified burials have become more difficult.

I swear when I am committed to go to bed at a decent time, EVERYONE wants to talk to me. I stayed up till 3am....I think? Or maybe it was 2, which isn't normally so bad if you're not getting up at 7:30AM. My parents, brother, grandparents, and my uncle Craig did a road trip up to Fergus Falls. It's three hours, which isn't so bad, but I forgot my headphones. It's been ages since I've been a passenger on a long trip with my family. I love sitting in the car with my music, looking out the window and thinking about whatever is on mind. Sleep was a back up plan that actually paid off.
We saw my aunt Joan whom I miss dearly, then my great great grandma Botts, went to an old neighbor's of ours at the cabin we used to own, my parents had to leave after that, but myself, my uncle and grandparents drove over to cousin and then home. To which somehow I got car sick and spent the rest of the night feeling like crap.
These two photos don't say much, but they are of my great great grandma's hands and propellers that were on my grandparent's old lawn at the cabin. I miss Fergus Falls, I miss the lake, I miss the family up here, I miss the distance from the world, I miss the relaxing freedom that came with the cabin. It was in our family for fifty years. I can't blame my grandparents for selling it. They're getting older and none of my family members can afford it, neither can they. One day I will get that cabin back, even if I have to wait.
LABOURER HANGS HIMSELF.
A labourer named John O'Connor, a married man about 50 years of age, committed suicide at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon. He was found dead suspended front the roof of an out house at the rear of premises occupied by his brother-in-law, Mr Edward Deary, about 6 p.m. The body was promptly cut down, but it was evident that life had been extinct for some considerable time. Deceased had been separated from his wife for six or seven years, but about a month ago he visited her at Mr Deary's residence and had some conversation with her. Deceased also leaves four children, one being the issue of his marriage with his present wife, and three by a former wife.
THE INQUEST.
An inquest was conducted this morning at Gleeson's Hotel by Mr T. Gresham (City Coroner) on the body of John O'Connor. Sergeant Hanson conducted the case for the police.
James Hunter deposed that he last saw the deceased alive some months ago. On Saturday last about dusk he was at Mr Deary's house. Shortly after he arrived Deary went out to chop some wood, and witness soon afterwards joined him. Hunter went into the outhouse, and in the darkness he saw what he imagined was a bundle of rags. He never suspected that it was a man, and as he was going out he passed some remark about there being a sack of rags in the outhouse to Deary who made the reply, "That's no bundle of rags." The next thing witness remembered was seeing the body lying on the ground, some few feet from the shed. Deary cut the body down and brought it out. Hunter, who had had a few drinks, and whose memory was not very clear, did not touch the body, and he had no idea who the deceased was until the arrival of Constable Mackie, who had been summoned by Deary. In reply to a question by Sergeant Hanson, witness said he had not been drinking that afternoon with Deary, but he had several drinks with other people.
Dr. Savage, who had inspected the body, was of the opinion that the deceased was between 45 and 50 years of age. With the exception of the mark made by the rope round the neck, there were no other marks of violence. From the depth of the rope mark he judged that the body had been hanging some time. Death was due to suffocation, and from the absence of any signs of a struggle, he thought that the injuries were self-inflicted.
At this juncture the foreman intimated that the jury were desirous of viewing the scene of the fatality, the hearing of the evidence being deferred until their return from Newmarket.
The hearing of the evidence in the inquest on John O'Connor was continued shortly after midday.
Edward Deary identified the body as that of his brother-in-law. The first time he saw O'Connor on Saturday last was when he saw his body on the grass. He was not aware previously that O'Connor had been on any part of his premises that day. About 6.30 p.m. he admitted Hunter into the house. Shortly before seven o'clock witness went out to cut some wood. Hunter passed him and went into the outhouse, where he remained for a minute or two. Looking round a little while after witness saw Hunter pushing some dark object with his foot, and he (Deary) called out. "Hullo, Jim. what's that?"' Hunter replied that it was a sack of rags. Not knowing what such a thing would be there, he went to look, and saw what at first he took to be a drunken man. He had no recollection of making the remark, "That's no bundle of rags," but it was possible that he did. As soon as he got close he recognised O'Connor. After cutting the rope from O'Connor's neck witness satisfied himself that the body was quite cold and life was extinct. He and Hunter then went and reported the matter to Constable Mackle. He always thought the deceased was a level-headed man, though for some time he had been drinking pretty freely. In reply to a question from a juryman as to who cut the body down and took it outside, witness said he could not say. The first he saw of the body was when it was lying on the glass outside the outhouse.
Constable Mackie gave evidence that he was summoned about seven p.m. by Hunter and Deary to New-street, where he found the deceased lying outside the outhouse. The constable gave corroborative evidence on other essential points.
Addressing the jury the coroner said the case was not an ordinary one. The evidence of the doctor showed that the cause of death was suffocation, and in the opinion of the doctor the hanging was self-indicted. It was clear that one of the two men who were in the yard took the body out to the position in which it was found by the police, but which it was they could not establish. As to the man's mental condition, there was no evidence to show that the deceased's mind was unbalanced.
The jury retired to consider their verdict, returning the decision that the deceased's death was due to strangulation by hanging, self-inflicted, whilst temporarily mentally deranged.

The Pella Wildlife Company is committed to the conservation of wildlife in Iowa as well as educational outreach programs in the Des Moines Area.
One of the recent additions to their program is a "photography club". Each session includes a brief educational seminar about the subject as well as some different techniques for photographing wildlife. Afterwards, you go out and practice what you learned in a natural setting.
In this case, we were shooing two black bear cubs in Waterworks Park. The lighting was good, even if the subjects were a bit fiesty. This is a fun event, and if you are a fan of wildlife I would encourage you to check them out.

Faigy Mayer committed suicide 20 July 2015 by falling twenty stories to her death from a Fifth Avenue rooftop in NoMad. I had met her a handful of times at social events in the “Off the Derech” community and the “reason‐based community” over the past three years. In this photo, she was taking a selfie at a social gathering organized by a mutual friend visiting from Israel.
