Ardmac recently added a number of new Ford vans to their fleet. The EBRD is committed to supporting the Green Energy Transition in its countries of operations. As more variable renewable energy sources are incorporated into the generation mix, new solutions are needed to ensure the stability of the electricity grid and the provision of reliable, high quality electricity supply. Additionally, the rise of distributed, consumer-led energy generation models may increase demand for solutions that decrease end users’ reliance on a centralized grid. Energy storage is likely to play a key role in providing such solutions to grid operators, generators and consumers alike.
This event brought together stakeholders from the private, public and financial sector to discuss the future of energy storage and its role in creating resilient, green economies. The panel explored the potential disruptive effect of storage on the energy industry, and how businesses and governments can contribute to and benefit from investment in energy storage solutions.

Rik Poot (1924 Vilvoorde - 2006 Jette ) is a strongly socially committed Flemish artist. In the initial period, his work was more abstract. Later on, he used a more figurative art form, within classical modernism. Essential to Rik Poot's formal language are the hollow spaces between the bronze parts from which his sculptures are constructed. By creating these openings, his monumental sculptures simultaneously acquire something light and a certain fragility. This gives his works a powerful and expressive rhythm. He was a great advocate of craftsmanship. He stated: "Without craftsmanship you cannot make art. An artist is a craftsman."

By the time John F. Kennedy committed to landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth on May 25th, 1961, the Soviet Union had already put up the world's first satellite, the first animals (a dog named Laika on a one-way trip and two others named Belka and Stelka who made the trip both ways,) and the first human (Yuri Gagain) who made one full orbit. Alan Shepard had barely made his 15-minute sub-orbital flight. The firsts for the Soviets continued through the decade with the first mission lasting a full day, the first time two manned spacecraft were in orbit simultaneously, the first woman in space, the first multi-person crew, and the first spacewalk. But in the end, they were the first world superpower to not land on the moon, making them the First Runner Up.
If the Russians had made it to the moon, a craft like this Soyuz 7K-OK Descent Module would have brought them home. The 7K-OK was in use from 1967 to 1971.

Future hopes on a number of different levels are pinned on so-called green technologies: on one hand, they could help reduce the rapidly increasing global demand for energy, or even offer alternatives to finite resources like oil and coal; on the other hand, as highly committed politicians and young start-up entrepreneurs have long insisted, they could be a driving force behind the revival of our sputtering economy. In this spirit, Ars Electronica is staging a “Repair Fair” to spotlight a small selection of outstanding ideas, concepts and best-practice models that point the way to a brighter future. Visitors can take an up-close-and-personal look at green transportation when they take one of a whole fleet of electrical vehicles out for a spin on the E-Mobility Parcours. Additional informational material will be available on site and in the Infolounge.

Marilyn Monroe committed to a mental institution. The star would never have gone to a psychiatric hospital on her own— Monroe was terrified of sanitariums because her mother lived in one for most of her life and her grandmother had died in one— Doctors told Monroe that she was going to a private hospital for some "rest and relaxation." It was under these false pretenses that Monroe arrived at New York's Payne Whitney hospital on Feb. 5, where she was quickly escorted by orderlies through several steel doors, then forcibly thrown into a padded room with barred windows and druged. "I'm locked up with these poor nutty people and they dope me," Monroe wrote to her acting teachers Paula and Lee Strasberg. "I'm sure to end up a nut too if I stay in this nightmare. Please help me." On Rescuer's Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, congratulated them on their professional holiday, and awarded state honors.
He emphasized that today is the professional holiday of all those whose job and calling is to save lives.
"Whatever happens, the SES of Ukraine is always there to help, and always promptly. They remain fully committed to their most important mission: saving lives," said the President.
The President inspected samples of automotive and robotic equipment. In particular, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SES Head Andriy Danyk reported on the use of surface drones and robotic systems for mine disposal.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian rescuers have responded to over 170,000 shelling occasions and extinguished more than 20,000 fires. SES sappers have neutralized over half a million explosive devices.
As a result of Russian aggression, 97 SES personnel have been killed, 395 injured, and 4 are currently held in Russian captivity.
The attendees observed a minute of silence to honor all those Ukraine has lost due to the war.
The President presented the Order of the Golden Star to the family of the fallen Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Artem Kostyria. The Lieutenant Colonel participated in over 70 operations to mitigate the consequences of Russian attacks. After the liberation of the Kharkiv region, he organized the restoration of nearly 100 damaged fire and rescue units. Thanks to his efforts, over 2,400 people were evacuated. Artem Kostyria was killed on July 13 this year while responding to the aftermath of an enemy missile strike when Russian forces launched a second ballistic missile attack.
The President also awarded SES employees the Orders "For Courage", II and III class, and the Order of Danylo Halytskyi.
Additionally, in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence, the winners of the nationwide "Hero – Rescuer of the Year" campaign were honored. Eight Ukrainians received awards:
Oleh Holubchenko, a maxillofacial surgeon from the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital. On July 8 of this year, during a Russian missile strike, he was performing surgery. Medical equipment failed, but he found alternative ways to maintain breathing and carried the child to shelter. Despite his injuries, he assisted rescuers and volunteers in clearing the hospital’s rubble.
Artem Makarov, a cadet at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. In April of this year, he saved an eight-year-old boy whom his own mother tried to drown.
Andriy Bibik, a police officer in the Novopillia community. In one of the villages, he noticed thick smoke near the houses. An outbuilding was on fire, and the flames were spreading toward homes. Andriy rescued a 13-year-old girl, an infant, and two dogs.
Yuliia Oholikhina, a personnel specialist at the SES in the Zaporizhzhia region. While on vacation, she saw a child drowning in a pool. She pulled the girl out of the water and provided first aid.
Andriy Lubenets, a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. Severely wounded in the war, last September, near a pond, he heard a 17-year-old boy’s cry for help. Despite his injured leg, Andriy swam to the boy and pushed him 20 meters to safety with one arm. Patrol police officers helped pull the boy out of the water and resuscitate him.
Ihor Kalashnyk, an electrician at a construction hypermarket. In May of this year, after Russian aerial bombs hit the hypermarket, he fully shut down the power to the building and helped evacuate four visitors from a smoke-filled area. He also removed generator barrels with fuel from the premises to prevent another explosion.
Polina Sholokh, a SES signaller. While at a car wash, she heard a woman screaming. Next to her was a boy with no signs of life, who had been pulled out of a drainage pit. Polina immediately began CPR, and after several minutes, the boy was breathing again.
Oleksandr Zhuk, a physical education teacher. Near a lake, he heard cries for help and saw three girls in the water. One had already lost consciousness and was pulling another down. Oleksandr rescued two of the girls from the water, while the third made it to the shore on her own.

Hundreds of protesters rallied near Brayton Point Power Plant and called upon Governor Deval Patrick to close the electricity-generating power plant in Somerset. 44 of the participants committed non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested for trespassing on the plant’s grounds. The plant is one of the largest electricity generating plants in New England, using a combination of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, or oil and diesel fuel to generate 1,528 megawatts of electricity. Demonstrators asserted that in 2010, the plant emitted 6 million of tons of carbon dioxide, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in all of New England and that annually the plant emits 15,000 pounds of mercury, arsenic, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants into the air. Participants called on Governor Patrick to shut down the plant as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the plant workers and community a just transition.

Image 1 of my 52 week project which will hopefully motivate me to improve both my photography and Photoshop (gimp) skills.
As you can see I'm in a rubber room and it's only the first week!
I took my new 1D Mk IV for its first Action hitout this morning, more to get used to the setup of the Auto Focus (all 60 or so custom functions, 50 pages of reading in the manual and a separate 50 page white paper from Canon ... ) and I was really impressed with the way it operated essentially straight 'out of the box'
Do I need more time to get used to it, and fine tune it ... you bet !
One thing that really put a smile on my face this morning was just how beautifully AutoISO works on this thing ... just set the shutter speed and aperture you want, and with the absolutely spot on exposure .... worrying about changing lighting conditions are now a dim dark memory ;-)
Is the image quality as good as my 5D Mk II ... nope
Do I care ... no way :-)

July 28, 2013. Somerset, MA.
