Dani tribesmen hold their weapons as they attack the Damal tribe during intertribal wars in the village of Old Kwaki in Timika, Indonesia's Papua province January 5, 2010. The intertribal war started because the Damal tribe was not willing to pay a fine in compensation for a rape that Dani tribesmen suspected was committed by a Damal tribe member. One person died and 25 were injured in the attack, a Caritas hospital officer said. REUTERS/Muhammad Yamin (INDONESIA - Tags: SOCIETY CIVIL UNREST)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a fully committed partner in Los Angeles River revitalization efforts, including the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. We are participating in several multi-purpose studies and demonstration projects within the watershed--starting at the confluence of Bell and Arroyo Calabasas Creeks in the San Fernando Valley and moving downstream to the heart of Los Angeles. We are helping create open space, wildlife habitat and an interconnected trail system.
One correction for the record. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has always considered the Los Angeles River to be a jurisdictional waterway, fully protected by the Clean Water Act. That status was not affected by the Supreme Court’s Rapanos decision. We fully support EPA’s recent decision categorizing the entire River as a "Traditional Navigable Water." EPA had authority to make a comprehensive evaluation of the watershed, while the Corps reviewed a four mile segment relevant to a specific permit application. During the two years between EPA’s decision to evaluate the navigable waterway status of the L.A. River and its ruling, 96% of the Corps’ determinations in the watershed found the section under review had full CWA protection!
As a fully committed partner in river revitalization, we proudly participated in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's L.A. River Day of Service. - Col. Mark Toy, District Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.

My mom's "Aunt Mary", as she was called, even though she wasn't her aunt, passed a way over the weekend and we made the drive to basically West Virginia for the calling hours. Mary was a very happy person and had a very distinct laugh from what I can remember. I also remember that she had the best sledding hill on her land. I don't know how many acres she had but me and my brother would go on these epic rides down the hill in her field.
Martha is my grandfathers sister. Her and Bob have been married for I don't even know how many years, but I will guess it is over 50. I get to see them every holiday and they are always in a great mood and laughing and just having fun. I wish I could have had a few more minutes with each of them so I could bust out the lights and get some real nice shots, but I didn't want to take up too much of their time.

Ellen is talking about a boy she knew for many years, who grew up, became a soldier, went to Iraq, came home, & committed suicide because of post traumatic shock.
Ellen was senselessly arrested the following week, & more senselessly arrested a 2nd time the following week.
Day 4 of the present round of protests (I missed Day 3, during which 2 citizens were arrested - 4 total so far - after refusing to leave because once again, after weeks of trying to get him to do so, Congressman Rick Larsen (D - WA), refused to respond with a simple telephone call).
We are in the Bellingham office of United States Congressman Rick Larsen. He is not present. His aide today, seated behind the desk, is Mr. Tripp Williams, a young man who appears to be quite moved by what transpired. The protesters are reading the names, ranks, ages, location of death, dates of death, home towns & a few sentences describing what is known about the circumstances of death of United States soldiers in Iraq. Where available, portraits of the soldiers are printed on the sheets everyone is holding. Mention is being made of some deaths among U.S. contractors in Iraq, & of the deaths of Iraqi citizens. Six or more of the women in the office are also talking about their children who are presently serving in Iraq, or who have recently returned from serving there. Several of the people in the room have strong, long-term ties to soldiers who have been killed in Iraq. One woman is talking about a young soldier who, after returning, descended into depression & disorder & one evening said, "I am a murderer," & committed suicide the next day (No, he is not counted among the war dead). As the photographs show, there were ample tears - but not ample enough to get a response from the congressman.
Everyone stays in the office past closing time, till the police arrive. However, all leave peacefully with the officers, so no arrests are made. I must add that once again the Bellingham city police are decent, courteous &, as always, meticulously respectful.
Power to the people. Now is the time.
QUESTIONS REPEATEDLY PRESENTED TO REP. RICK LARSEN
1. What are the specific reasons that you did not sign the declaration of peace (See # 4 below)?
2. Are you supporting HR197 (no permanent military presence in Iraq)?
3. What is your definition of 'permanent,' as in permanent military bases in Iraq?
4. What are the specific reasons that you will not support the three resolutions on the Declaration of Peace (HR4232: Timetable for withdrawal; H.Con.Res.348: Expresses the sense of Congress with respect to accomplishing the mission in Iraq; H.Con.Res.197: No permanent bases & shift from funding war to meeting human needs)?
5. Why do you keep funding the occupation of Iraq?
6. Have you voted 'No' on any military appropriation bill since 2001?
7. Will you support impeachment pf President Bush? If not, why?
8. Will you support a preemptive attack on Iran?
9. You often refer to the military objectives of the Iraq War. What, exactly, ARE those objectives?

Just rounding the corner... at this point I’m 50 masks in and only have 20 more to go.
Thought I would snap this picture of the masks before there trimmed... This has been such a good mask making learning experience. It’s given me some really good insights on how to mass produce work... for future projects.
I even managed to you make one Neutral masks in my off time... haha! so when I’m not working on making masks I’m making masks... sounds kind of silly now that I see this written down in words... I just didn’t want to wait a month until I could see how the Neutral Mask mold turned out.

A man known as “Prisoner X” has committed suicide in an Israeli jail, in a strange spy drama twist you might see on an episode of Burn Notice. Ben Zygier, 34-year-old Australian immigrant was reportedly recruited by Israel's Mossad spy agency and charged with grave crimes before taking his own life while incarcerated. Israeli criminal attorney Avigdor Feldman – who wouldn’t elaborate about the charges – says he met with Zygier the day before his death and that there were ongoing negotiations for a plea deal in the case.
“I met with a balanced person, given the tragic outcome, who was rationally weighing his legal options,” Feldman told Israel’s Channel 10 television. “His interrogators told him he could expect lengthy jail time and be ostracized from his family and the Jewish community,” Feldman said, adding “There was no heart string they did not pull, and I suppose that ultimately brought about the tragic end.”
Reporting in Israel on the case has been subject to strict government censorship, however this week the government broke its silence after the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that Zygier was being held in isolation over his suspected misconduct while spying for the Mossad. In partially lifting their gag order on the case, an Israeli court said a dual-nationality citizen had been imprisoned secretly under a false name for “security reasons” and was found dead in his cell in what was eventually ruled a suicide.
The hush-hush nature of the case has raised questions in both Australia and Israel about the circumstances behind Zygier’s 2010 detention and subsequent death and have led some to question Mossad’s suspected use of dual Australian-Israeli nationals in their espionage work. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Zygier was one of at least three Australian-Israeli citizens suspected of working with the Mossad intelligence agency.
Israel’s Mossad, America’s CIA, Britain’s MI-6, and the old Russian KGB are perhaps the most well known spy agencies and frequently appear in spy thriller novels, movies and television shows. Nations utilize these services in an attempt to find out what adversaries – and even friends – are up to as they try to learn each other’s secrets. While the nature of Ben Zygier’s spy work isn’t known, he reportedly traveled to Iran, Syria and Lebanon for Mossad. Pray for the agency’s efforts as they attempt to keep Israel safe from foreign enemies and pray for the family Ben Zygier leaves behind.

English "diamond king," promoter, and speculator; born in London July 5, 1852; committed suicide by jumping from the deck of the steamship "Scot," June 14, 1897. His father, Isaac Isaacs, was a small general dealer with a prosperous business. Both Barnett and his elder and only brother, Henry, were educated at the Jews' Free School, Spitalfields, the head master of which was Moses Angel.
In 1871 Henry went to try his fortune at the Kimberley diamond-fields, South Africa; and, his means being at first slender, he endeavored to raise money by appearing as a conjurer and entertainer under the professional name of "H. I. Barnato." A little later he became a diamond-dealer, and wrote home advising his brother to join him. Barnett sailed for Cape Town in 1873 and reached Kimberley with about £50. Finding his brother to be generally known as "Harry Barnato," he decided to adopt the same surname. Thenceforward he signed himself "B. I. Barnato," and was popularly referred to as "Barney Barnato."
In 1874 Barney and his brother commenced business as diamond-dealers under the firm-name of "Barnato Brothers"; and in 1876 Barney, who was then worth about $15,000, purchased four claims in the Kimberley mine, which soon brought in an income of $9,000 a week. In 1880 he visited London and established the firm of "Barnato Brothers," financiers and diamond-dealers. On his return to Kimberley he floated his first company, "The Barnato Diamond Mining Company," for $575,000, which paid a dividend of 36 per cent per annum. The same year the late Cecil John Rhodes floated the first De Beers Diamond Mining Company; he and Barnato continued rivals until the amalgamation of that company with the Kimberley Central Company. Barnato next turned promoter. In the Rand he organized the Glencairn, New Crœsus, Primrose, and Roodeport companies. He invested in the Johannesburg Water Company, and became a member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and of other concerns. At the height of his financial career he enjoyed the confidence of the public to such an extent that in a single day $5,500,000 was subscribed for shares in one of his enterprises.
Barnato was returned for the Legislative Assembly of Cape Colony as member for Kimberley, after a fierce contest, in 1888, and was reelected in 1894, although he had been burned in effigy a short time before.
Barnato's success as a speculator caused him to revisit London, where he became known as a daring operator; and for a short time his companies received some public support. In July, 1895, he attained the height of his popularity in England and was lionized; but his career was meteor-like. His experience in the London stock-market, with which he was unfamiliar, was disastrous. He formed a trust company which he named "The Barnato Building Company"; and the demand for participation in this enterprise was so great that the £1 shares rose to £4 at the opening of the subscription lists, though they fell below par soon afterward, owing largely to the fact that the securities held by the company were of uncertain value. In November, 1895, the lord mayor of London gave a banquet in honor of Barnato, who, wishing to be under no obligation, handed a check for $50,000 to him as a donation to the fund for the benefit of the poor in Spitalfields, in whose welfare the lord mayor was then actively interested.
Events resulting from the Jameson raid into the Transvaal, which jeopardized Barnato's interests, compelled him to return to South Africa, where he remained to adjust his affairs; but the strain was more than he could stand. Hoping to benefit his health by a sea voyage, he sailed for England in the care of his wife and two nurses; but he grew no better. While in a state of frenzy, he succeeded in eluding his attendants, and, jumping overboard, was drowned. His body was recovered, and now lies in Willesden cemetery, near London. Although Barnato was at one time reputed to be worth $85,000,000, it is doubtful if he ever had more than $35,000,000. At the time of his death his estate was valued at $3,000,000. As an amateur actor, Barnato was a never-failing attraction, especially as Matthias in "The Bells"—a part he often played in the early Kimberley days.
The flavor of Malort committed a mouth assault. I was so traumatized that, as I drank the shot, I tried to not pay attention to the flavor in my mouth. I blocked it. I have no idea how to describe it, because as it happened I refused to give in language in my head. It was along the lines of "This will be over soon, drink Sprite fast." The Sprite barely cut the flavor. It just took time and water.

I swear when I am committed to go to bed at a decent time, EVERYONE wants to talk to me. I stayed up till 3am....I think? Or maybe it was 2, which isn't normally so bad if you're not getting up at 7:30AM. My parents, brother, grandparents, and my uncle Craig did a road trip up to Fergus Falls. It's three hours, which isn't so bad, but I forgot my headphones. It's been ages since I've been a passenger on a long trip with my family. I love sitting in the car with my music, looking out the window and thinking about whatever is on mind. Sleep was a back up plan that actually paid off.
We saw my aunt Joan whom I miss dearly, then my great great grandma Botts, went to an old neighbor's of ours at the cabin we used to own, my parents had to leave after that, but myself, my uncle and grandparents drove over to cousin and then home. To which somehow I got car sick and spent the rest of the night feeling like crap.
These two photos don't say much, but they are of my great great grandma's hands and propellers that were on my grandparent's old lawn at the cabin. I miss Fergus Falls, I miss the lake, I miss the family up here, I miss the distance from the world, I miss the relaxing freedom that came with the cabin. It was in our family for fifty years. I can't blame my grandparents for selling it. They're getting older and none of my family members can afford it, neither can they. One day I will get that cabin back, even if I have to wait.
LABOURER HANGS HIMSELF.
A labourer named John O'Connor, a married man about 50 years of age, committed suicide at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon. He was found dead suspended front the roof of an out house at the rear of premises occupied by his brother-in-law, Mr Edward Deary, about 6 p.m. The body was promptly cut down, but it was evident that life had been extinct for some considerable time. Deceased had been separated from his wife for six or seven years, but about a month ago he visited her at Mr Deary's residence and had some conversation with her. Deceased also leaves four children, one being the issue of his marriage with his present wife, and three by a former wife.
THE INQUEST.
An inquest was conducted this morning at Gleeson's Hotel by Mr T. Gresham (City Coroner) on the body of John O'Connor. Sergeant Hanson conducted the case for the police.
James Hunter deposed that he last saw the deceased alive some months ago. On Saturday last about dusk he was at Mr Deary's house. Shortly after he arrived Deary went out to chop some wood, and witness soon afterwards joined him. Hunter went into the outhouse, and in the darkness he saw what he imagined was a bundle of rags. He never suspected that it was a man, and as he was going out he passed some remark about there being a sack of rags in the outhouse to Deary who made the reply, "That's no bundle of rags." The next thing witness remembered was seeing the body lying on the ground, some few feet from the shed. Deary cut the body down and brought it out. Hunter, who had had a few drinks, and whose memory was not very clear, did not touch the body, and he had no idea who the deceased was until the arrival of Constable Mackie, who had been summoned by Deary. In reply to a question by Sergeant Hanson, witness said he had not been drinking that afternoon with Deary, but he had several drinks with other people.
Dr. Savage, who had inspected the body, was of the opinion that the deceased was between 45 and 50 years of age. With the exception of the mark made by the rope round the neck, there were no other marks of violence. From the depth of the rope mark he judged that the body had been hanging some time. Death was due to suffocation, and from the absence of any signs of a struggle, he thought that the injuries were self-inflicted.
At this juncture the foreman intimated that the jury were desirous of viewing the scene of the fatality, the hearing of the evidence being deferred until their return from Newmarket.
The hearing of the evidence in the inquest on John O'Connor was continued shortly after midday.
Edward Deary identified the body as that of his brother-in-law. The first time he saw O'Connor on Saturday last was when he saw his body on the grass. He was not aware previously that O'Connor had been on any part of his premises that day. About 6.30 p.m. he admitted Hunter into the house. Shortly before seven o'clock witness went out to cut some wood. Hunter passed him and went into the outhouse, where he remained for a minute or two. Looking round a little while after witness saw Hunter pushing some dark object with his foot, and he (Deary) called out. "Hullo, Jim. what's that?"' Hunter replied that it was a sack of rags. Not knowing what such a thing would be there, he went to look, and saw what at first he took to be a drunken man. He had no recollection of making the remark, "That's no bundle of rags," but it was possible that he did. As soon as he got close he recognised O'Connor. After cutting the rope from O'Connor's neck witness satisfied himself that the body was quite cold and life was extinct. He and Hunter then went and reported the matter to Constable Mackle. He always thought the deceased was a level-headed man, though for some time he had been drinking pretty freely. In reply to a question from a juryman as to who cut the body down and took it outside, witness said he could not say. The first he saw of the body was when it was lying on the glass outside the outhouse.
Constable Mackie gave evidence that he was summoned about seven p.m. by Hunter and Deary to New-street, where he found the deceased lying outside the outhouse. The constable gave corroborative evidence on other essential points.
Addressing the jury the coroner said the case was not an ordinary one. The evidence of the doctor showed that the cause of death was suffocation, and in the opinion of the doctor the hanging was self-indicted. It was clear that one of the two men who were in the yard took the body out to the position in which it was found by the police, but which it was they could not establish. As to the man's mental condition, there was no evidence to show that the deceased's mind was unbalanced.
The jury retired to consider their verdict, returning the decision that the deceased's death was due to strangulation by hanging, self-inflicted, whilst temporarily mentally deranged.
