The Altiplano (Spanish for "high plain"), Andean Plateau or Bolivian Plateau, in west-central South America, where the Andes are at their widest, is the most extensive area of high plateau on Earth outside Tibet. The bulk of the Altiplano lies within Bolivian and Peruvian territory while its southern parts lie in Chile and Argentina.
The Altiplano plateau hosts several cities like El Alto, La Paz, Puno, Oruro, Potosí, and Cuzco. The northeastern Altiplano is more humid than the southwestern, the latter of which hosts several salares, or salt flats, due to its aridity. At the Bolivia-Peru border lies Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America.
The Altiplano was the site of several Pre-Columbian cultures including the Tiawanaku and the Inca Empire. Spain conquered the region in the 16th century.
Major economic activities in the Altiplano include mining, llama and vicuña herding, and services in the cities. There is a fair amount of international tourism.

We did a 2000-km long car road loop in the southern part of Altiplano region, Argentina, starting in Córdoba, and going way up north across barren mountainous landscapes, scattered settlements, lonesome volcanoes and endless salt flats. Altiplano is a special part of the world, indeed, and definitely one of the most amazing landscapes on the Earth.
Here, we were driving from the remote settlement of Antofagasta de la Sierra to Salar del Hombre Muerto salt flats and further to Susques settlement, passing remote and eerie high altitude landscapes of the Argentinian Altiplano.

7016 and 7018 head through South Edmonton to the intermodal yard to build train 108 tonight. Thanks for the heads up AJ - I haven't caught one of hte grey and maroon units yet, let alone a matched set! Would have been nice to get them in full sun somewhere but I'll take what I can get!
I loved the colours in this photo of a cold, little Black-capped Chickadee, seen down in the park on a long morning walk yesterday. These birds are only 24 hours away from death - if they don't manage to find enough to eat and put on a layer of fat overnight, then they will perish.
This complete series is a set of sunset photos taken from through the same window on 3 different days through the same tree branches. I often felt that we do not have a very clear sunset view from our lounge because of these trees. But after Fall, these trees bare and the contrasts they provide against the colour gradations of the sky is just fabulous.
I wonder what changes the colour everyday to something different!

It looks cold but it was our warmest day at 27c. The sun came out at the end if the day sadly. On our holiday we spent 20 days in Queensland with the first in for two nights in Brisbane before heading to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in Australia for six nights.
The Noosa area was originally home to several Aboriginal groups. These primarily include the Undumbi tribe to the south, the Dulingbara to the north, and the Kabi Kabi (or Gabbi Gabbi) to the west.
Although reports of the area can be traced back to Captain Cook's voyages in May 1770, European settlement in the region did not proceed for almost a century. This early settlement was primarily driven firstly by timber logging and then secondly a gold rush in the Gympie area, north of Noosa. The difficulty of transport in the region, which persisted to the 1920s and beyond, was one major reason for this.
In 1871, the Government laid out a port at Tewantin, which was duly surveyed and by 1877 contained two hotels, a boarding house, school, police station and telegraph office. In 1872, the Noosa Heads and coastal region north to Peregian Beach was set aside as an Aboriginal Mission, however this was cancelled in 1878 and land was opened for selection on 15 January 1879. With the advent of the railway, Tewantin declined in importance.[4]
In the last 50 years Noosa has been transformed from an isolated fishing village to a popular tourist destination. Although this has had its costs the shire is known for its generally greener approach to development. Most development in Noosa has been restrained. Noosa has no high rise buildings, due both to local community pressure and to council planning action, and much remaining native forest. 34.8 per cent of the Noosa district consists of National Parks, Conservation Parks, State Forests, and other generally protected land.
The popularity of Noosa comes from the fact that is it one of Australia's few North facing beaches located on the East Coast, hence Noosa Beach is relatively protected from on-shore wind and storms.

Flamboyant colours of some flowers in my garden. They do clash a bit don't they? The Penstemon was planted there because It was very poorly and didn't look like it was going to survive, I just wanted to give it another chance.
