It seems like we go along unfazed by the cold until one morning we wake up to a blanket of crisp white. Yesterday morning was that morning.
With the frost comes a new season in the garden. I can now begin cleaning out the remnants of summer and start putting the garden to bed. I’m always reluctant to admit that winter is near until I witness the death blow that comes inevitable by surprise some morning.

The big news of the day is how cold it is outside. They claim it is the coldest day in 15 years.
The photo is of my computer screen when I left for work at 7:30am. I have a program that tells the outside temperature and it was 3 degrees in Alton, Illinois. BRRRRRR!!!!
The Ice Skater, painted by me aged 8, little did I know when I put this up on Saturday that it really would snow on my Birthday.
On Saturday and Sunday (my birthday) I celebrated my 50th at home in Oxford. For the occasion I had a small private dispay of a number of my paintings and drawings dating back to 1964!
It was great to meet up and share the time with a few of mt Flickr friends who live in the area.

Temperature maybe in the 50s, a gentle rain that chills you to the bone ... why aren't the people who own these boats out on the Ohio River today? They would have it all to themselves.

I had planned on staying a couple of hours down by Hammersmith Bridge today, firstly getting some daytime long exposure shots, and then experimenting with light-trails across the bridge. I didn't last too long though as it was so cold my fingers started turning blue despite wearing thick gloves!
I'll try another attempt when this cold snap gives up.
"The cold goes straight through you when you reach 70"
A series of candid street portraits I took on the morning, June 9. It was a really cold Sydney morning, hopefully that comes across in these shots.
DTE is making some money this week! It is so cold in MI today- going to be colder tomorrow. My little meter was spinning faster by the hour :) HBW. I'll be spending mine indoors!

What you see here is how some people here have to warm their cars up on really, really cold days. Even cars with block heaters and such will sometimes have a problem starting up (especially if the battery is weak and/or has been in the cold for a while) on cold days, hence the space heater you see here.
It's attached to a stovepipe under the car. The pipe has a curved junction on it so it goes upwards at a 90 degree angle, thereby dumping the heat from the heater right on the engine block.
Usually, it works.

In Legion of Super-Heroes comics, Polar Boy is considered a joke. "Cold powers??", various Legionaires scoff.
He's relegated to the Legion of Substitute Heroes.
In fact, his powers are as strong, if not stronger, than those of infamous super-villains like Killer Frost or The Icicle. He single-handedly defeated Tharok of the Fatal Five by cooling his cybernetics down to absolute zero, thus rendering Tharok inert.
Fans have always thought that if Sun Boy and Wildfire are Legionaires, why not Polar Boy? Polar Boy's constant rejection by the Legion, almost always for dubious reasons, became a running gag.
