Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.
We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.

Warm and Cold, … It's Coming!
After some less timely posts here's one fresh. Well, fresh according to my measures but still not as Instagram. It's about an hour old.
It's the beginning of November so it was about time for something like this for Buffalo to live up to its reputation. Bring it on, bring it on by feet! :-)

Photo taken 01.16.24. In Texas, it's not often that ponds start to ice up. It's been cold for several days now. The temperatures have ranged from the low teens to mid 20s. That's just cold enough to put a thin layer of ice around a few of the banks. Photo copyright Clif Bosler 2024

Leicester Square, London, England, United Kingdom. Saturday 17th January 2015, around noon.
About the photograph.
With apologise to the lady in the photo, I have no idea what her name is. I did ask her for permissions to take photos and publish them, but I may have failed to ask her for her first name. If I did ask her, I may have failed to note down her name.
I was doing a photography project called Windy Street, as explained below, under the section heading of About the project.
She was the second person whom I approached, and asked if she have any objections to my taking photos of her for my project. She agreed and let me take the photos.
This was taken at approximately the north-east corner of the park at Leicester Square, in the background is the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square cinema.
I think she is a flyer / leaflet distributor, she was there to hand out leaflets about a show or an event, to members of the public. You can see what looks like leaflets or booklet in her hand. I believe she had that rose with her as part of an attraction, to draw attention to her.
At that time I took the photograph, it was a very cold weather, being in January. Here, you see she wears medium length fur coat fastened with buttons, a twisted scarf possibility made of wool, and ear muffins to keep her ears warm.
About the project.
The project called Windy Street, was to try to create some kind of an article about women’s winter fashion, focused on fur coats, with photos of real women as opposite to booked models.
The article was supposed to be a blog or a gallery, maybe try to get it published in a magazine or write a book about it.
The plan was to go to major cities like London, Birmingham, Cardiff, and anywhere like that. Go to main busy streets or plazas during the winter months. The aim was to be on the outlook for any women wearing a winter outfit including a fur coat, approach them, and explain that I’m a photographer doing a project.
I explained to them that I want to take photos of women whom are members of the public, not professional models. I explained that I wish to take photos of real life women wearing the outfits, to illustrate the reality of their fashion style.
Catwalk models may display an amazing looking outfit, but the design of the outfit often changes between the catwalk display to the actual production line. The project was to show the fur coats and the outfits as worn by members of the public, rather than as worn by catwalk models or professional models. To showcase the difference between design stage, adverting, and reality.
On that day of the photographs, I was in London. The first person I approached was a couple, a guy and a woman in a cream coloured fur coat. I told her about my project and asked her for permissions to take photos of her. She agreed, and I even asked the man who was with her, if he would not mind being in the photo too, he even agreed.
The Lady with the Rose, or the Rose Lady, was the second person I approached.
But at that time in 2015, I struggled with the project. Part of the reason was my self-confidence was down, but the main reason was because I was a busy full-time single parent and full-time carer. It was often difficult to get the ex-wife to agree to have both of the kids for the day, so I could go and do photo-shoots.
My project kind of stalled at first, then I kind of put it on the back burner while I do other projects, finally decided to shelf the project.

Goulburn in southern NSW rarely sees snow, but this year there were three falls. This final one happened in mid September, and was not predicted. These images were taken almost three hours after the snow stopped falling, and had already lost it's intensity on the ground.

It is the first time in four years time that the Netherlands received so much snowfall. According to the National weather center KNMI. In some parts of the north of Holland lies between 7 to 9 inches of snow. The last time this occurred was in 2005. Normally the Netherlands get no more than between 3 and 5 inches of snow. It does occasionally snow in Amsterdam in December, but that almost always means just a light dusting. If you think the city is attractive in dry weather, just wait until you wake up one morning to see it covered in a thin coat of fresh snow. In Amsterdam you can’t help noticing the Dutch like bikes. In fact, the 750,000 people who live in Amsterdam own over 600,000 bicycles. In a city built for pedestrians – sporting such car-unfriendly features as narrow streets and canals, far too few parking spots (at premium fees), and single-lane one-way only traffic mazes – a bicycle is the most logical form of transportation. In Amsterdam, just about everyone bikes. It is not unusual to see mothers, grandmothers, business people, police officers, hippies, and so on happily bike along. Some people walk their dogs by bike. Others use it to bring home groceries, flowers, furniture, children, girlfriends or anything else one can think of. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. But not only in Amsterdam, temperatures freezing are sweeping across Europe. The snow had a significant impact on social life and caused traffic problems in the north of the Netherlands, while in other parts of the country, police have been busy with a number of weather related accidents. Even Dutch rail networks were severely affected and bus traffic is down. Weather centers predict more snow for the Netherlands in the coming days.
Yesterday it snowed all day. Today the weather was fine but still lots of snow to enjoy. We walk around the canals and made some photos of the snow in of our neighborhood. The steep bridges over the canals in Amsterdam are now really slippery. ...especially for cars. Last night extreme temperature of -6 degrees Celsius. This is rare since the winter has not yet started. Photo taken at Reguliersgracht in Amsterdam. Reflection of 18th century canal houses on a clear winter day.

When the coot heard my camera, I got this look. Apparently it was not feeling cute & didn't appreciate having a photo taken.

Long Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.
The hard winter freeze has come to Parsonsfield over the past few day's bringing record setting cold and strong North West winds.
Wind blown water spray on Long Pond has created many ice formations along the eastern shoreline.
