Lonely tree on the rural road in Saline County, Nebraska. The weather was cold and windy, but was brave enough went out and photo'd some places.
Surprised him from behind, turned my lens towards him, clicked and told him he was "looking good!". He muttered something at me in a foreign tongue...I cursed myself for being a half-stride too close to him.

Our dark skies started clearing late in the afternoon as the sun was setting but the temperature dropped like a rock, it was only 14°F when I shot this photo, it's going to be the coldest night we have seen so far this winter for sure.
When the snow won't come to you then you must go in search of the snow. This is part of the Edale Valley in the Peak District. The winding road is used as a lead line in most of the photos you see form this place - the base of Mam Tor, one of the stand out 'mountains' in this part of Derbyshire.

Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.
We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.
Luosto biedt een prachtig landschap voor avontuurlijke activiteiten en de mogelijkheid om te genieten van de rust en schoonheid van de Finse wildernis. Ons plan is om de spectaculaire fell (berg) te beklimmen. Wanneer we uit de auto stappen, lijkt de natuur hier in een diepe winterslaap te verkeren. Onze wandeling begint bij dageraad in het afgelegen gehucht Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland kunnen de kleuren van de lucht tijdens zonsopkomst en zonsondergang zeer intens zijn door de lage stand van de zon aan de horizon. Het is verschrikkelijk koud hier op de 514 meter hoge berg, mede door de strakke poolwind. De zon bereikt zijn hoogste punt op deze korte januaridag en schijnt prachtig net over de top van de berg. Ook is er een zonnehalo te zien, een optisch fenomeen dat ontstaat door de breking, reflectie en verstrooiing van licht door ijskristallen in de atmosfeer. We ontdooien nog even en rusten uit voordat we beginnen aan onze terugreis. Wandelen in de sneeuw is zwaar. We nemen dezelfde route terug omdat we niet vast willen komen te zitten in de diepe sneeuw en we in ieder geval voor het donker terug willen zijn in Luosto. In totaal hebben we meer dan 18.000 stappen gezet, maar we hebben genoten van deze speciale plek in Lapland. In Luosto hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op heerlijke rendier-jerky en panna cotta, terwijl BieJee genoot van een rendierburger.

The winter is not over yet in the Netherlands. A snowstorm packing strong winds and moving over the hummocky ice. This snowstorm is unfolding across the IJsselmeer with possible inches of snow or hale! I sense the storm's approach. It also has such a solitary feeling very Outer Limits or Twilight Zone feeling. I'm sure the geese sense it too and are migratory, moving south here in front of this snowstorm. The greylag geese fly in V- formation to save themselves energy. During the month January and February thousands of geese can be found here in Waterland. The Dutch IJsselmeer lake is covered with icerocks hummocks, caused by the cold weather of the passed days. At some places even higher than 6 meter! Storm surges were advancing threat of drifting ice-floes can cause dyke failure. But the icebreakers, that have – more often than not – protected these dykes and clustered houses from the threat of drifting ice-floes during strong winters. Scary but breath taking...
For outdoor lovers the dykes from Durgerdam to Marken offers an unforgetable rural route of about 10 km along IJsselmeer. In de wintertime it takes you along the hummocky ice to the famous lighthouse of Marken called 'the Horse'. Photo taken on the dyke near the Pittoresque village of Uitdam. A scary snowstorm is appoaching while the geese are moving South. I almost got hit by a guy on skeelers. Skating along the dyke I didn't expect and hear him due to the harsh wind. De winter in Nederland lijkt dit weekeinde zijn laatste adem uit te blazen, de afgelopen nacht heeft het op diverse plaatsen gevroren. Maar een bijzondere fase komt er nog aan. Die van het kruiende smeltende ijs. Wat we nodig hebben, is eigenlijk een zo sterk mogelijke zuidwestelijke wind. Met name hier op het IJsselmeer, dat voor een groot deel nog met ijs is bedekt, zal het ijs dan snel gaan bewegen en tegen de dijken omhoog komen. Ook uit koude winters uit het verleden kennen we die situaties nog maar al te goed. Het levert vaak uiterst spectaculaire beelden op. Wat mij elke keer weer opvalt met m'n bezoek is dat het ijs niet statisch is, maar dat de situatie er van dag tot dag sterk verandert. Toen de winter al een tijd op gang was en het IJsselmeer voor een groot deel was dichtgevroren, was er een korte episode met een sterke zuidwestelijke wind. Die sterke wind streek over de ijsvelden. Nu breekt het ijs op een oppervlak zo groot als het IJsselmeer gemakkelijk in verschillende platen op en als dat niet gebeurt is er ook altijd de scheepvaart om hierbij een handje te helpen. Die platen bewogen hierna langs elkaar heen en op elkaar in. Omdat het ijs in beweging was, omdat momenten met dooi en vorst elkaar in rap tempo opvolgden. En ook al lijkt de vorst nu voorbij, dat proces zet de komende tijd natuurlijk gewoon verder door. Het ijs smelt langzaam, de wind houdt zijn invloed. Het is pas normaal als het water weer kabbelt zoals voorheen en het ijs verdwenen is.
Maar de winter geeft nog niet zo gauw op. Een flinke sneeuwstorm met onweer raast over het IJsselmeer. Sneeuw levert vooral problemen op als het ook hard waait. Bij temperaturen onder het vriespunt stuift de sneeuw en die fijne stuifsneeuw kan door de kleinste kieren en gaten binnendringen, het zicht tot een paar honderd meter beperken en grote overlast bezorgen. De Grauwe gans, grijsbruine gans met forse oranje snavel en roze poten is hier heel veel te zien in Waterland. Duizenden ganzen vliegen voor deze sneeuwstorm uit naar het zuiden en altijd in V-formatie waardoor de krachtsinspanningen over de groep worden verdeeld.

Yli-Nampa is located in the north of Finland, specifically in the Lapland region. This region is located above the Arctic Circle and is known for its vast forests, lakes and un-spoilt nature. Yli-Nampa itself is an area in Lapland that is suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and experiencing northern nature and culture. During the month of January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night. This phenomenon occurs in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our way to Luosto. In Yli-Nampa, the moon shines beautifully over the forest while the sun has yet to rise, but the sky is beginning to lighten. The snow in Yli-Nampa lies like an untouched white carpet, and the trees are draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step breaks the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in a deep winter slumber. The path is lined with pine trees adorned with ice crystals. The expanse of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tingles on my skin. The moment with the moon, surrounded by the white beauty of nature, is magical. It's not just a hike but also an encounter with the beauty of winter in Lapland.
Wandelen in Yli-Nampa, Finland, biedt een prachtige en serene buitenervaring, vooral voor wie ongerepte natuur en rustige landschappen waardeert. On 7 January 2026, the Netherlands lies under a thick blanket of snow. Code Orange is in effect, and its impact is felt everywhere: flights are canceled, trains and buses barely run, and the daily rhythm slows abruptly. In the center of Amsterdam, such a snowy day is rare. Because of urban heat and the surrounding water, snow usually doesn’t last here. It quickly turns wet, grey, and disappears. But not today. On the Herenmarkt, the playground lies quiet—at least until the first snowball fight erupts. Beneath the bare trees, with the West India House standing as a stately backdrop, snowballs fly back and forth. Parents and children face each other, no longer divided by age, but as equal players in a spontaneous winter game. The snow falls thick and soft, settling on the square, the climbing frames, and the bicycles along the fence. Laughter drowns out the silence that snow usually brings. Children dodge, slip, and jump back up laughing. Adults aim carefully—or not at all—and let themselves be carried away by the moment. The historic facades around the Herenmarkt form a calm, dark frame against which the drifting snow remains clearly visible. Streetlights cast a warm glow over the scene, while footsteps are muffled by the white carpet. For a moment, the city seems to have forgotten its haste. Amsterdam feels smaller here, more human—almost village-like. This place shows what snow can do: it disrupts daily life, but it also brings people together. On this winter day, an ordinary playground turns into a shared memory. And that, right in the heart of Mokum, is what makes this moment so special.
A spontaneous snowball fight between parents and children unfolds on the Herenmarkt in central Amsterdam, as fresh snow transforms the playground into a winter scene. With the West India House in the background, laughter replaces the usual city noise, and for a moment the city feels quiet, playful, and almost village-like.
Op 7 januari 2026 ligt Nederland onder een dik pak sneeuw. Code Oranje is van kracht en dat is overal merkbaar: vluchten zijn geschrapt, treinen en bussen rijden nauwelijks en het dagelijkse ritme vertraagt abrupt. In het centrum van Amsterdam is zo’n sneeuwdag zeldzaam. Door stedelijke warmte en het water blijft sneeuw hier meestal niet liggen. Vaak wordt het snel nat, grijs en verdwenen. Maar vandaag niet. Op de Herenmarkt ligt de speeltuin er stil bij — althans, tot het eerste sneeuwballengevecht losbarst. Onder de kale bomen, met het West-Indisch Huis als statig decor op de achtergrond, vliegen de sneeuwballen heen en weer. Ouders en kinderen staan tegenover elkaar, even niet als groot en klein, maar als gelijke spelers in een spontaan winters spel. De sneeuw valt dicht en zacht en blijft liggen op het plein, de klimrekken en de fietsen langs het hek. Gelach overstemt de stilte die sneeuw normaal brengt. Kinderen duiken weg, glijden uit, staan lachend weer op. Volwassenen mikken voorzichtig — of juist niet — en laten zich meevoeren door het moment. De historische gevels rond de Herenmarkt vormen een rustig, donker kader waartegen de sneeuw zichtbaar blijft dwarrelen. Straatlantaarns geven een warme gloed aan het tafereel, terwijl voetstappen worden gesmoord door het witte tapijt. Even lijkt de stad haar haast vergeten. Amsterdam voelt hier kleiner, menselijker — bijna dorps. Deze plek laat zien wat sneeuw kan doen: het ontregelt het dagelijks leven, maar verbindt ook. Op deze winterdag verandert een gewone speeltuin in een gedeelde herinnering. En dat, midden in Mokum, maakt dit moment zo bijzonder.
Caught during an unexpected spring snowfall, this squirrel remained tucked against the old textured bark while quietly feeding beneath the falling snow.
A cold afternoon over the western coast of Tjøme, where the skerries stretch northwards beneath a veil of winter haze. Captured with a drone above Mostranda near Moutmarka, the landscape reveals the rugged geometry of the Færder archipelago — scattered islands shaped by ice, wind, and centuries of coastal weather. The muted blue tones, softened by the season, trace the shoreline’s curves as the North Sea presses quietly against the rocks below. A moment of stillness on the outer edge of Vestfold’s coastline.

The Færder archipelago is part of one of Norway’s youngest national parks, Færder National Park, established in 2013. It protects over 340 km² of coastal nature, including skerries, reefs, and unique geological formations shaped during the last Ice Age.

This was the place that my younger son had planned to wed his fiancé at dawn.
The officiant was with us along with 4 kids of the new mixed family.
No one but my son and I wanted to go up on the rocks so we sought another location for the site of the informal wedding.
Sorry that this isn't a very great photo from my cell.
However, I was dressed for the weather and could have sat with a cuppa coffee on a rock out of the wind and watched the day arrive.
I will come back here for sure. What an amazing shoreline.
