I had a photographic itch to scratch and had to get out to see what I could find. Sweeping landscapes were not in my thoughts today as it was cold and overcast and for some reason the moor didn't appeal. I went for a drive in the other direction -- up to the Blackdown Hills -- and found this old derelict building standing out against the snow.
I don't normally say this but, due to the snow, probably best on black.

Our Daily Challenge ... friendship.
It's cold, wet and miserable today. Even the sea gulls have deserted the beach ... except for these two anyway.

A lot of people don't like sea gulls but I am not one of them. To me they are synonymous with sea and sand.
You know it's cold when you see the birds tucking their feet up into their body. Poor little things, I don't know how they do it and I wish I could of stayed out there longer today feeding them but when it is minus 16 with a wind chill of minus 23 you can only take so much. Yet these guys are out in it 24 hours a day!! You really have to hand it to them, we like to think we are so great because we invent things like fireplaces and other heating sources, but what would we do if we could not use those heating sources? Shiver to death, that is what would happen to most...
I lived in this valley for over a decade, where it is consistently 15 to 20 degrees colder than anywhere nearby - summer, or winter. A few years ago I stopped by the Elkhorn mid-morning for a cup of coffee. I told Uncle Bob I'd read -51 that morning. The bar's about 80 vertical feet lower in elevation than my place. He said he got up to pee around 5 a.m. and it was -72 then. Typically it's coldest right around sunrise, which was almost three hours later.
When I dropped back to the valley floor mid-afternoon today after a day of backcountry skiing, it had warmed up to -14 F. At least at this latitude of 44 degrees N, the sun still has a little bit of punch to it, even one week after the solstice. The days are now getting longer, but the lag effect of the earth's cooling is still on its way.
Happy New Year! Moo.
When it gets this cold, layer up. The dove knows.

Like angels with wild beast's eyes
I shall return to your bedroom
And silently glide toward you
With the shadows of the night;
And, dark beauty, I shall give you
Kisses cold as the moon
And the caresses of a snake
That crawls around a grave.
When the livid morning comes,
You'll find my place empty,
And it will be cold there till night.
I wish to hold sway over
Your life and youth by fear,
As others do by tenderness.
