Cold weather is here for a couple of days! Time to start soup making for fall, winter and spring. And today I made curried lentil soup with spinach:
Mirepoix with ½ onion, 2 carrots, 3 large stalks of celery or portions to suit you. I do it by eye. This is a fun article about mirepoix: www.salon.com/2010/05/29/mirepoix_pincage/ . This is archived, so who knows how long it will be available! Use whichever version of mirepoix that tickles your fancy.
2 cups of lentils, 4 cups of water, let cook until lentils are almost tender, adding water as needed. Add soup base to taste, being careful of the salt level. Add curry powder to taste or make your own curry (I just emptied out all the curry powders I had because they were getting close to no more curry flavor levels). Stir in 1 pound of spinach, adding and stirring as the spinach wilts. If you like things spicy, add a red jalapeno or two, preferably ripened on the vine in your sister’s garden. Remember to wash your hands afterwards, or wear rubber gloves: those peppers' capsaicin can do things to you that you would not enjoy. Add more salt to taste.
When cooked, serve with a dollop of yogurt and naan if you have it, or pita. I am having Italian flat bread as a taste trial.—Update: the Italian flatbread is like a chewy version of pita, pretty tasty too
Downtown Manhattan as seen from Brooklyn Heights. This cluster of skyscrapers was mostly blue anyway, so I exaggerated a bit for more effect.
The pelicans were smarter than I on a cold windy morning. Bundle up & stay home.

Took this back in Autumn, it was the first frost of the season.
For some reason it reminds me of Sorbet. What do you think?

Located in the mountains above Santa Barbara, California, Cold Spring Tavern was originally a stagecoach stop from 1865-1901.
Ice cold... opposite to my warm feelings towards all the great people I've 'met' here on this site. I haven't forgotten you, but I'm real short on time at the moment... and in that situation, something has to give... I'm sorry to say that Flickr is that something. But I promise to try and find some time soon... ;-D

Almost magic. Gimme some snow too please. So I can play.
Coldplay in other words.
It was somewhat silly of me standing at the water's edge as the wind coming of the sea was bitterly cold!!

It's cold, wet and miserable today. Even the sea gulls have deserted the beach ... except for these two anyway.

A lot of people don't like sea gulls but I am not one of them. To me they are synonymous with sea and sand.
it was minus twenty-two celcius and windy which all added to the adventure. Enjoying winter is very possible but it means not avoiding it. You have to get out there and embrace the season!
I like the detail in this section of window frost, which was growing on its own in a corner of the window.

[ EXPLORED # 94 BEST POSITION EVER . march 5th 2011 ]
I'm resorting to walking lately for photo explorations. Deep snow banks and accumulations of plowed snow and ice make it near impossible to pull off on the local roadsides. Things always seem less hurried when I go out walking. Gives me a much better sense of my surroundings.
