Very cold weather recently has resulted in local rivers freezing along the banks and in ice flows. For example, the last few early morning low temperatures have been 13 to 15 degrees F. IMG_1445

Cloud Type: Stratocumulus stratiformis opacus mamma cumulogenitus. Taken late afternoon with widely scattered showers in vicinity. Air temperature was 46F at time of image.

Taken at my regular favourite pub out in the sticks in Hedgerley. Very old pub the main bar unfortunately has five doors very poor insulation plus another log burning stove but you still need your coats on in winter.!!

But it is a beautiful very old building with wood and brick construction, listed building with single glazing, and in summer is nice and cool inside.

The main attraction is excellent good value food and a large range of beers from all over the UK.

Sunday walk in cold weather, but a beautiful one

Winter is hitting pretty hard. We never got above 0° F today. Tonight we are supposed to get about 6" of snow and then the wind is going to crank up for the next several days while temps continue to hover around 0...

The recent bitterly cold weather created a clogging of ice on the Cedar River below the dam. The ice seemed to form overnight and on Jan 17 it was as high on the bridge pier as you see the remaining ice hanging on. It was as high as some minor flooding that occured in June of this past year. It appears the river finally cut thru the ice and now there is a pretty swift channel thru the ice, and the water and ice levels have dropped 3-4 feet. On the bridge we have the L571 Ft Dodge local starting its journey Westbound over the circa 1899 Illinois Central (now Canadian National) bridge.

"Layers of Reality"

View On Black

I was thinking while shooting this about the possibility of multiple realities existing side by side. Sitting just beneath our level of perception, or awareness, may lie the key which unlocks infinity.

....maybe, it's already HERE!

Looks like the Mountain Ash tree is ready for it. I love the color blend of foliage and I love New England in Autumn.

This is a shot taken Jan. 3, 2025. These hawks will often hunt by hovering in place, flapping their wings if there is not enough wind. Red-tailed hawks will also do this.

In a stiff breeze they are able to just face into the wind and stay in place, known as kiting. I saw one of these hawks doing this today Jan 17, in a very stiff breeze, 20-30 mph. Some very cold weather is due to move in overnight.

Walking to work on a frigid morning, pause for a quick snap as I cross the Union Canal, snow and ice, the canal itself mostly frozen, save for small pockets of free water around the bridges.

Can find a few Flowers in Bloom.

A walk to the beach begins with frost on cars, little drops of melted frost, a misty haze and bright sun, all in this series of shots taken at Kirkley and Pakefield in south Lowestoft. Also, they are all taken with a prime lens - no zoom.

A botanist said the curling of the seed heads is a reaction to the change of weather and the plant’s ability to protect the seeds. Obviously, this plant is having two different reactions, but then again, it could be two different plants all together.

Muddy Waters - Cold Weather Blues

The cutie Patootie feeling blue looking out at the snowy garden.

Even a bear needs a warm coat at times, and this was certainly the case on this occasion. Sandy was checking that his friend with the camera knew what they were doing in the bitterly cold weather. It was such a sudden and unexpected change from the prolonged and unseasonably warm weather for the time of the year. It just dropped several degrees without any warning. This is nothing unusual - it can suddenly go from cold weather to being an excessive heatwave.

Bears just take it in their stride of course and leave the complaining to others.

HTBT.

It's hard to believe this was SoCal weather today. ❄ We had pea sized hail at LAX with 30-40mph wind gusts!! 😄

But skiing down was perfect... (dia scan)

Ludihana WDM3A pair 16491 and 16612 at Bathinda on 1st February 2023. You don't associate India with cold weather, but Northern India can be enveloped in freezing fog in December and January. Only the AC coaches have any sort of climate control, the non AC vehicles (i.e. the bulk of the fleet) is completely unheated. Any tiny gap in the window shutters or an open door somewhere in the carriage soon makes its presence felt.

Our schnoodle gets to have his sweatshirt on when it is cold outside ;)

Here he is standing outside in the morning light, it was around 25 degrees F.

For all my friends here on flickr I am ok.. just alot going on and I will try to get back on here and in the swing of things very soon.

Love you all!

Got bored after midterms today, so I shot my Maisto C6 Z06 in my backyard. What do you guys think on the edit?

The recent nightly drops in temperature and frosty mornings have brought new opportunities for art in nature.

This abstract of water, ice and leaves was a welcome surprise in the backyard water fountain coming back to life after freezing up overnight.
