Experiencing the picturesque Milford Sound from the open deck of a cruise ship can be quite a 'bracing' encounter, so some passengers resort to a little unconventional fashion accessories for comfort
The theme this week is 'BACKSIDE' - HSoS!
~~~ Thank you all for viewing, kind comments, favs and awards - much appreciated! ~~~
Bill ventured outside for some fresh air, very cold so he took a cushion and sat down for a while, being furry has its advantages!
Peppers was happy to see me today, and followed me around as I cleaned his barn. He likes to stand in my way and force me to give him pats, which I don't mind. I left some hay on the floor, so the goats would have a comfy place to relax during the upcoming colder weather.
We start the new year with a little snow and cold weather. The snow is fine with me, but the older I get the less I like the cold over time. Frozen roundbales, dead batteries on the tractors, risk of frozen water pipes in the less used parts of the barn and so on.
There is much more work and risk of troubble when the cold lasts for weeks as it looks like it shall now.
But that is how it is to live here, and it is ok. It is just a tad annoying when you are in hurry to bring home roundbales and the tractor need a 20 minutes battery charge and a heater fan to heat the engine before you can start.
Varg on the other hand LOVES it. It is perfect for a Malamute. So today we went up to te glacier and had a walk around. Well, I walked, he mostly ran joyfull around in the snow.
The sun will be back here in a few days, today we could just about see it for a few minutes as you see in this photo. Down where we live we have the sun for some 40 minutes right now. It doesn't warm up much during the day by that!
There is a LOAD of photos and a couple of short videos in the first comment. But first a couple of photos taken at the annual Christmas party of Fjaerland ungdomslag. That is the party where the idea to the calendar came last year. We got a prize for being the local branch with the most and widest range of activities last year (2023) And that was before we produced the calendar!
A day of continuous rain, grey skies and incredibly cold weather. Have we reverted to January?
In fact my whole day was rather luck lustre so a grey blank picture summed up the way I felt about the day.
“Bitter cold weather has taken hold of much of the northern United States. Wind chill advisories or warnings are in effect for much of New England, northern Pennsylvania and New York...Forecasters warn of hypothermia and frostbite from arctic air settling in over the central U.S. and spreading east.” –The Washington Post
Most these Herons are having gone south flying away from the cold weather and the start of a few Ice water. This one remains here, perhaps will leave now as temperatures below 0 at night, already as low -7 and this Friday high -5 and low to -10. Heron could die from the cold weather soon! I’ll try to follow again.
Now that the weather is getting cooler some beans and a nice smoked ham hock seems like a hearty meal.
Winter has returned, but it is going to take a few days of cold weather to create the beautiful ice formations. But at least this is better than no ice at all!
Cloud Type: Stratocumulus stratiformis opacus mamma cumulogenitus. Taken late afternoon with widely scattered showers in vicinity. Air temperature was 46F at time of image.
Taken at my regular favourite pub out in the sticks in Hedgerley. Very old pub the main bar unfortunately has five doors very poor insulation plus another log burning stove but you still need your coats on in winter.!!
But it is a beautiful very old building with wood and brick construction, listed building with single glazing, and in summer is nice and cool inside.
The main attraction is excellent good value food and a large range of beers from all over the UK.
Winter is hitting pretty hard. We never got above 0° F today. Tonight we are supposed to get about 6" of snow and then the wind is going to crank up for the next several days while temps continue to hover around 0...
"Layers of Reality"
I was thinking while shooting this about the possibility of multiple realities existing side by side. Sitting just beneath our level of perception, or awareness, may lie the key which unlocks infinity.
"Did you ever wonder if the person in the puddle is real, and you're just a reflection of him?" ~ Calvin and Hobbes - comic strip written by Bill Watterson
Walking to work on a frigid morning, pause for a quick snap as I cross the Union Canal, snow and ice, the canal itself mostly frozen, save for small pockets of free water around the bridges.
You stay just long enough
to feel familiar
a quiet dinner
wine warming your grin
as the conversation thins
edges crisping
like leaves in late October.
At the beginning of the story
you told me
you were unworthy.
I thought you meant unready.
Now I understand
it was the only warning
in the language you knew.
Sometimes our eyes catch
and for a breath
we recognise the outline
of something neither of us can hold.
You always look away first.
Then you drift
back into your chosen dusk.
The room loosens its jaw
heat returns to my skin.
I must stop dreaming.
You arrive like seasonal weather
autumnal pleasure but cold as ever.
The frost comes at night.
When the dark settles in
you are nowhere in sight.
I reach for a sweater.
You are the chill
that taught me
how to build my own fire
how to sit with warmth
you never stayed to feel.
And this time
when winter knocks
I breathe
remember the warning
and sleep till morning.
