The real cold weather is due to disappear starting this afternoon, so I was out before dawn while it was still -10˚C.
A little prep was needed, so I placed the Gerbera outside before going to bed so it would freeze. It was cloudy, when I first started setting up. The clouds were moving off to the east: and by sunrise, moved off enough for the sun to light up the bubble. I like the colour the sun generates on the bubble at sunrise. Later on the sun is too bright and things get too contrasty.
Also, not a lot of time to get shots. The problem with using the sun as a light source, it also eventually melted the Gerber, which then got very mushy and limp. It quickly put an end to the session.
This male downy woodpecker has put himself in the classic heat escape lessening position, or HELP, a technique used by people in survival situations to conserve body heat and prevent hypothermia. Birds know how to stay warm under cold weather conditions.

Because of the restriction to 1000 photographs imposed by flickr, I moved most of the pictures of Fay Fay Orchid here :

Three cormorants stand together on a rocky outcropping waiting for some fish.
These birds will move south soon due to snow and cold weather.
It was about 25 degrees F on Mardi Gras Day. Many of these lovely trees were doubtless bit by the weather. I am happy we got to see these at least a couple of days before Old Man Winter lashed out as us! Boooool Not fun.
This feeder tends to get a little crowed when the weather gets a little colder outside.
These four male American Goldfinches tolerated each other, more or less. long enough for me to grab a few photos through the window.
Yes, it was cold outside, but the wind made me decide to keep the window closed during this bout of birdwatching.
*** If you look closely, you can see the reflection of a Goldfinch, in the dome that covers this feeder, who was waiting its turn..
As long as were talking BC Rail heritage, here's an aerial of the BCOL along Hoosier Creek in Burlington, WI back in March of 2021.
we have the jays all year, but I see them the most when the weather turns colder .. and cold it is .. we had snow today:-( it will melt, but still .... way to early!
I have had a long day at work and I'm off to the dentist tomorrow, so hopefully will catch up tomorrow night! have a great Wednesday!
This is taken in late October, but the weather have been much the same since. It has been reather cold, but wonderful after about 3,5 month of mostly rain.
This is from our field down by the fjord. The stones are stabbesteinar. "stabbestein m (definite singular stabbesteinen, indefinite plural stabbesteinar, definite plural stabbesteinane)
one of several large stones formerly placed at intervals the side of the road to prevent vehicles from driving off the road. Nowadays mostly replaced by guardrails."
I add a few more photos from the same place, mostly from summer, in the first comment. And a few jokes found somewhere on the web.
With this very cold weather that is upon us,the wildfowl are being forced further inshore. After my livestock check, I went for a look and found a large number of Brent Geese on the local "garage pond" this bird was close enough to take a few pics.
On the first day of summer it's good to look back a few months to when it was winter. Valentine's Day 2021 was a cold one in the Twin Ports. As I recall it was about -25 when this ore train rolled into Proctor and damp enough that the pellets were steaming nicely. It'll be winter again before we know it.
The Great Heron bird was hunkered down, neck tucked in and wings covering his thin legs in cold weather @ Lake Crabtree County Park.
Once again many thanks for visits, comments and faves, much appreciated!

The morning 7th of February I woke up to see Amsterdam covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children here in Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen or go sledding. All fun activities that children do in this beautiful snowy world.
Singelgebied is the name of the second largest red light district in Amsterdam. The Singel is a typical picturesque tree lined Amsterdam canal and you could easily pass through here without even realizing it is a red light district. The windows are mostly occupied by women but it is closed now during the Covid-19 but the red lights are still on. The area is a nice quiet neighbourhood especially during lock-down. Children can now just enjoy sledding. The snow is during the lock-down days an uninhibited winter fun in the streets of Amsterdam. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. Photo taken on the Oude Nieuwstraat just behind the Singelgracht.
Bitter cold weather continues here in Iowa, but all things considered, birds like this little junco are coping quite well. Down in normally tropical Florida, the rare cold conditions there have caused iguanas to come tumbling out of the trees!
In July! It snowed a bit on the 4th of July although there was no accumulation, 24 hour sunlight with blackout curtains on bedroom windows.
