time passing... as in history. Where this clock now stands and buses stop, a restaurant once stood. A boarding house was nearby and still exists as a historical relic, and a general store still stands also as a historical building and store.

It was here that Robert Louis Stevenson ate each night during his stay in Monterey in 1879, a stay that some think inspired the story of Treasure Island.

'Clocking' is a Brit slang term for 'watching'. And, it's yours truly being clocked, btw.

The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is a major landmark and popular meeting point in Leicester.

I met a young lady there in January 1991... we are still together 22 years later (along the way we seem to have collected 3 children, a dog and a Volvo estate).

The Clock Tower was "erected by public subscription, aided by the Corporation of this Borough, AD 1868, in memory of four benefactors of Leicester".

From the 12th century hay, straw and other agricultural produce were sold at the site where the Clock Tower now stands. Borough records of this area dated 1260 suggest that there was a mound known as 'Berehill', probably from a Saxon word for barley. In 1484 Berehill Cross stood on the mound and beneath it a set of stocks, pillory, and cage for the punishment of delinquents. Over the centuries the area acquired various names - Barrel Cross, Roundhill (corrupted to The Roundle), Gosewell Gate and Coal Hill.

An Assembly Room was built on the site in 1750, which was used for public dances, concerts, meetings and entertainments. When the new Assembly Rooms in Hotel Street opened in 1801, the old building was converted into separate shops and put to various other uses, including a hay and straw store and a furniture showroom. By 1867, horse-drawn traffic was causing chaos in this area.

The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower was built in 1868 to form a traffic island and pedestrian refuge, and as a memorial to four local benefactors whose statues stand on the corners of the Tower. A competition held to secure the best design was won by Joseph Goddard, the 28 year old son of prominent local architect, Henry Goddard.

The tower is constructed of Ketton stone with a base of Mountsorrel granite, and incorporating column shafts of polished Peterhead granite and serpentine. The statues are of Portland stone, and were sculpted by a local monumental mason, Samuel Barfield, under Goddard's supervision; Barfield's fee for each statue was £37 10s 0d (£37.50). The clock was supplied by Gillett and Bland of Croydon, and the mechanism of its four dials is connected by a single guide-rod. The Clock Tower is a grade 2 listed building.

The four benefactors depicted on the Clock Tower are:

Simon De Montfort (c.1208-1265). Earl of Leicester and credited with forming the first Parliament in 1265.

William Wyggeston (1467-1536), a wealthy wool merchant; twice mayor of Leicester; MP for Leicester 1504, founder of Wyggeston's Hospital.

Sir Thomas White (1492-1567). A native of Reading, he endowed various Midlands towns, including Leicester, with £40, to be used for interest free loans to young men to establish themselves in business. These funds having greatly appreciated since the 16th century, loans are still administered by local trustees.

Alderman Gabriel Newton (1683-1762), woolcomber, mayor of Leicester in 1732. After the death of his only son, he used much of his wealth to provide educational facilities for the poorer children of the town.

A lovely day out with ianbartlett for a wander around Tunbridge Wells. I decided to look up and snap some of the clocks, for the 365 treasure hunt, number 22 "Clocks".

PS ... not all the clocks told the correct time!

You don't have to be a brillient artist. Just do a quick scenic background over an old canvas that you've gone off. Then, use a glue gun to add treasures from your walks. An instant 3D masterpiece and it cost nothing.

Old clock fitting on a decorated T-shirt, fun !!!!! no SILLY, you don't wear it you hang it on the wall.

The metronome clock art installation (apparently the hole in the middle aligns with the clock on the facade of Grand Central Station at the other end of Park Avenue.

With the Public Art Fund acting as a consultant, the developer Stephen M. Ross went through over 200 submissions before choosing “Metronome” by Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel. Installed in 1999, the $3 million dollar piece is meant to symbolize the intangibility of time.

The central component, measuring 100 feet high and 60 feet wide, is formed of an undulating brick wall emanating a dark circular void surrounded by gold leaf overlay that dissipates across the panel into gold fragments. Below, a massive rock juts out through the brick wall, and to the left on the glass façade, is a digital time piece which counts the twenty-four hours of the day while simultaneously subtracting the time remaining in the day. To the right, is the lunar timepiece, composed of a sphere set into a socket, which is synchronized to revolve with the phases of the moon.

The Westfield Clock Tower installed as part of the nearby MassDOT Great River Bridge Project, which includes a new 3 lane bridge over the Westfield River, rehabilitation of the existing 3-lane bridge, replacement of a railroad viaduct, and construction of park areas.

It makes me laugh every time I go to tell the time. I think that's pretty appropriate.

In preparation for the next open day, the clock was given a thorough restoration.

RESTORE!! (This was one of my New Year's "guidelines," to restore or repair old things and make them new again). I took an old clock that I have had since about 1967 and made it over into something quite different. It might be gaudy for some, but I like how it matches the multi-colored frames on my nightstand now.

Basically I cleaned up the old hardware and scraped old glue, then painted the wood parts of the clock gold. I then attached glass crystals in various sizes and colors to make something that looks like it could come from the thieves' cave that Ali Baba visits (or so I tell myself).

While I did this I watched the uncut version of 1954's "The Egyptian," directed by Michael Curtiz. OMG what a long and melodramatic movie!!! I saw it years ago but I had forgotten most of it.

I guess an english class was here the night before. This is my math classroom.

I'm still trying to figure out the stick figures.

And yup, no clock watching in that class1

New approach to the S2 clock project in evidence here.

So far the brief/analysis/specification pages are produced in much the same way as ever. The radical shift is in the generation of ideas approach. Here we borrowed an idea outlined in Kurt Rowland's 1968 book "The Shapes We Need". Amongst other things Rowland explores spatial relationships and really gets to the heart of aesthetics and visual beauty. Some things just look right and others don't. Why is this? Rowland seems to have a some good theories about this. This book was part of a series he released in the late 60's. I understand these textbooks were standard issue in Glasgow Secondary Schools Art Departments at the time. I don't know of any art teachers that used them much apart from my mother. Anyway this little card based exercise suited our purposes perfectly.

The current S2 course has seeen alot of changes over the last five years. We'll distribute the cours notes on the S2 Course page at: designandtechnologydepartment.co.uk in due course.

Back in the breaker box, The Energy Detective takes power readings and transmits them over the mains. In the clock, an analog filter/amplifier isolates these RF signals from the incoming AC power. An AVR microcontroller does further filtering, decodes the packets, and generates clock ticks.
