Under pressure from Republican constituents, The Big Three, and business,
the Bush administration enacted policy exempting SUVs from CAFÉ standards
ostensibly because they are trucks involved in business when in fact, they
are often the private gas guzzling vehicles of the wealthy(my Chevy Traverse
included). ALL private vehicles whether considered trucks or not, should be
required to comply with the CAFÉ standards. Those of us who drive lighter,
more efficient vehicles(such as my Toyota Prius) incur the adverse health
effects of increased pollutants and the greater threat to our national
security posed by dependence upon foreign oil that results from the driving
of inefficient vehicles. A portion of the financial liability incurred by a
driver involved in a multi vehicle collision should be based upon the gross
weight of his vehicle. This will fairly assign a portion of the
responsibility for damage based upon inertia, an indisputable physical
property, effectively eroding the current incentive to own a larger vehicle
for safety reasons. Detroit contends that Americans desire big vehicles
over smaller ones when attempting to justify its production of SUVs. I
contend that many Americans are opposed to most of the adverse effects of
owning a big vehicle, but are scared to own anything but an SUV. Americans
are continually scared into buying SUVs
buy an SUV or be killed by one.
. It is inherently unfair to those of us pioneering the use of lighter,
highly efficient vehicles to be risking life, limb, and fortune as we drive
among heavy, inefficient, and dangerous SUV's. The EPA holds the key to
cleaner, safer, and more fuel efficient vehicles. It is empowered to break
this cycle of fear and increase demand for vehicles with improved safety and
efficiency. By taking action now, the EPA will significantly decrease the
adverse health effects and the adverse effect upon national security posed
by inefficient vehicles. It will also help the US to follow the example the
fuel efficient Europeans and lead China toward a more ecological expansion
of private vehicle ownership. Pictured are the Prii of three likeminded

Hey EPA! I have no personal car... I share "my" three cars with 40 others in a car coop at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, so I can't show you "my" keys. Our cars run on biodeisel, and if I was showing you a pic from a couple years ago, you'd see Toyota Prius keys dangling from my fingers. I really do want clean cars! Please support our states doing right by our local environments.

Day 55/365 - So fresh, so clean... Like a freshly waxed car should look! I can see reflections again! And it turns out the specs all over my car, that I was afraid were sap, were even worse -- PAINT! They said I most likely drove through an area where they were doing line painting on the road, and some got sprayed all over (and under) my car!!! Ah well, at least they got it off. And yea, detailing cost a pretty penny, but it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! Thanks, Russell Mazda!!!
Yesterday I waited a good 35 minutes for my turn through the old car wash. But my salt-colored car is now back in black.

Santa James A, here from Minnesota. I'm sorry I don't have a key for my
sleigh, but I DO want vehicles that get better gas mileage and less
pollution. Hybrid and electric vehicles preferred. Global warming is
threatening my other home at the North Pole, the homes of Children
everywhere and the homes of my many wild animal friends.

Neighbors who grew my chicken feed make their own biodiesel from sunflowers
they grow themselves. The sunflower oil (expressed from the seeds and
converted to biodiesel, right there in the barn) fuels their tractors, truck, and
van. The sunflower cake (remainder of the seed; high protein) feeds several
flocks of chickens and a small herd of beef cattle. The critters also eat hay
and corn planted & harvested by vehicles running on home-grown bioodiesel
... Talk about win-win-win solutions!
No money went overseas for this. They had a supply of fuel to grow our food
(even last summer when petroleum prices were so high), Running vehicles on
the alternate fuel keeps money in the community, reduces pollution, and
provides food security.
Hoping my 1990 Acura Integra with almost 300,000 miles on it lasts until a
clean, affordable replacement comes along. (Still gets 30 mpg, even with 1990
technology.)
Individuals, states, and the nation have no excuse to procrastinate on a
mandate for clean energy vehicles and production.
Dear Mr. President, my Grandpa and I would like to have cleaner cars
now so that when I'm as old as my Grandpa is today we will have a
cleaner Earth to live on.
My Grandpa has kept his older car because when it was built in 1997 and
even last summer 2008 if he used his cruise control at 64 miles per hour
he could get 36 to 37 miles per gallon in his Buick. None of the newer
Buicks the size of his LeSabre can come close to that mileage. The car
is old now and he has to replace it with something that will hold safety
seats to transport me and my baby cousin and older cousin as well as
Grandma. No more dirty cars please.
